  1. Verse 1

dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca mahān apanayaḥ sūta mamaivātra viśeṣataḥ sa idānīm anuprāpto manye saṃjaya śocataḥ

Dhritarashtra said: Great was the misconduct, O charioteer, and especially mine herein; and now it has come home to me, I think, O Sanjaya, as I grieve.

  2. Verse 2

yad gataṃ tad gatam iti mamāsīn manasi sthitam idānīm atra kiṃ kāryaṃ prakariṣyāmi saṃjaya

'What is gone is gone' — that had settled in my mind; now, what task shall I perform here, O Sanjaya?

  3. Verse 3

yathā tv eṣa kṣayo vṛtto mamāpanayasaṃbhavaḥ vīrāṇāṃ tan mamācakṣva sthirībhūto 'smi saṃjaya

How this destruction of heroes came about, sprung from my misdeeds — tell me that; I have become composed, O Sanjaya.

  4. Verse 4

saṃjaya uvāca karṇabhīmau mahārāja parākrāntau mahāhave bāṇavarṣāṇy avarṣetāṃ vṛṣṭimantāv ivāmbudau

Sanjaya said: Karna and Bhima, O great king, exerting themselves in the great battle, rained showers of arrows, like two rain-charged clouds.

  5. Verse 5

bhīmanāmāṅkitā bāṇāḥ svarṇapuṅkhāḥ śilāśitāḥ viviśuḥ karṇam āsādya bhindanta iva jīvitam

The arrows marked with Bhima's name, gold-nocked and stone-whetted, reaching Karna, entered him, as if cleaving his life.

  6. Verse 6

tathaiva karṇanirmuktaiḥ saviṣair iva pannagaiḥ ākīryata raṇe bhīmaḥ śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ

So too, by the arrows loosed by Karna, like venomous serpents, Bhima was covered over in the battle, by the hundreds and thousands.

  7. Verse 7

tayoḥ śarair mahārāja saṃpatadbhiḥ samantataḥ babhūva tava sainyānāṃ saṃkṣobhaḥ sāgaropamaḥ

By the arrows of the two, O great king, falling on every side, there arose among your armies an agitation like that of the ocean.

  8. Verse 8

bhīmacāpacyutair bāṇais tava sainyam ariṃdama avadhyata camūmadhye ghorair āśīviṣopamaiḥ

By the arrows loosed from Bhima's bow, O foe-subduer, your army was slaughtered in the midst of the host — arrows terrible, like venomous serpents.

  9. Verse 9

vāraṇaiḥ patitai rājan vājibhiś ca naraiḥ saha adṛśyata mahī kīrṇā vātanunnair drumair iva

With elephants fallen, O king, and horses and men together, the earth was seen strewn with them, like trees felled by the wind.

  10. Verse 10

te vadhyamānāḥ samare bhīmacāpacyutaiḥ śaraiḥ prādravaṃs tāvakā yodhāḥ kim etad iti cābruvan

Being slaughtered in the battle by the arrows loosed from Bhima's bow, your warriors fled, saying, 'What is this?'

  11. Verse 11

tato vyudastaṃ tat sainyaṃ sindhusauvīrakauravam protsāritaṃ mahāvegaiḥ karṇapāṇḍavayoḥ śaraiḥ

Then that army of the Sindhus, Sauviras, and Kauravas was scattered, driven away by the great-speeding arrows of Karna and the Pandava.

  12. Verse 12

te śarāturabhūyiṣṭhā hatāśvanaravāhanāḥ utsṛjya karṇaṃ bhīmaṃ ca prādravan sarvatodiśam

Those warriors, mostly afflicted by arrows, their horses, men, and mounts slain, abandoning Karna and Bhima, fled in every direction.

  13. Verse 13

nūnaṃ pārthārtham evāsmān mohayanti divaukasaḥ yat karṇabhīmaprabhavair vadhyate no balaṃ śaraiḥ

'Surely, for Partha's sake, the dwellers of heaven bewilder us, since our host is being slain by the arrows sprung from Karna and Bhima.'

  14. Verse 14

evaṃ bruvanto yodhās te tāvakā bhayapīḍitāḥ śarapātaṃ samutsṛjya sthitā yuddhadidṛkṣavaḥ

Thus speaking, those warriors of yours, oppressed by fear, quitting the range of arrows, stood, wishing only to watch the battle.

  15. Verse 15

tataḥ prāvartata nadī ghorarūpā mahāhave babhūva ca viśeṣeṇa bhīrūṇāṃ bhayavardhinī

Then a river of terrible aspect began to flow on the great battlefield, and it became, above all, an increaser of fear to the timid.

  16. Verse 16

vāraṇāśvamanuṣyāṇāṃ rudhiraughasamudbhavā saṃvṛtā gatasattvaiś ca manuṣyagajavājibhiḥ

Sprung from the streams of blood of elephants, horses, and men, and filled with the lifeless bodies of men, elephants, and horses,

  17. Verse 17

sānukarṣapatākaiś ca dvipāśvarathabhūṣaṇaiḥ syandanair apaviddhaiś ca bhagnacakrākṣakūbaraiḥ

and with chariots — their draught-poles and banners fallen, the ornaments of elephants, horses, and cars — and with chariots cast aside, their wheels, axles, and poles broken,

  18. Verse 18

jātarūpapariṣkārair dhanurbhiḥ sumahādhanaiḥ suvarṇapuṅkhair iṣubhir nārācaiś ca sahasraśaḥ

with gold-adorned bows of very great worth, and with gold-nocked arrows and iron shafts by the thousands,

  19. Verse 19

karṇapāṇḍavanirmuktair nirmuktair iva pannagaiḥ prāsatomarasaṃghātaiḥ khaḍgaiś ca saparaśvadhaiḥ

loosed by Karna and the Pandava, like serpents freed from their sloughs, and with masses of lances and iron clubs, and with swords and battle-axes,

  20. Verse 20

suvarṇavikṛtaiś cāpi gadāmusalapaṭṭiśaiḥ vajraiś ca vividhākāraiḥ śaktibhiḥ parighair api śataghnībhiś ca citrābhir babhau bhārata medinī

and with maces, pestles, and pattishas adorned with gold, with thunderbolt-weapons of various shapes, with spears and iron bludgeons, and with wondrous Shataghnis — with these the earth shone, O Bharata.

  21. Verse 21

kanakāṅgadakeyūraiḥ kuṇḍalair maṇibhiḥ śubhaiḥ tanutraiḥ satalatraiś ca hārair niṣkaiś ca bhārata

With golden armlets and bracelets, with earrings and fair gems, with coats of mail and leathern guards, with necklaces and gold ornaments, O Bharata,

  22. Verse 22

vastraiś chatraiś ca vidhvastaiś cāmaravyajanair api gajāśvamanujair bhinnaiḥ śastraiḥ syandanabhūṣaṇaiḥ

with garments and umbrellas shattered, and with yak-tail fans, with elephants, horses, and men torn apart, with weapons and chariot-ornaments,

  23. Verse 23

tais taiś ca vividhair bhāvais tatra tatra vasuṃdharā patitair apaviddhaiś ca saṃbabhau dyaur iva grahaiḥ

with these and various other things, here and there, the earth, strewn with the fallen and the cast-aside, shone like the sky with its stars.

  24. Verse 24

acintyam adbhutaṃ caiva tayoḥ karmātimānuṣam dṛṣṭvā cāraṇasiddhānāṃ vismayaḥ samapadyata

Beholding the inconceivable, wonderful, and superhuman deed of the two, amazement arose among the charanas and the siddhas.

  25. Verse 25

agner vāyusahāyasya gatiḥ kakṣa ivāhave āsīd bhīmasahāyasya raudram ādhirather gatam nipātitadhvajarathaṃ hatavājinaradvipam

In the battle, as the course of fire aided by the wind amid dry grass, so was the terrible course of the son of Adhiratha matched with Bhima — its banners and chariots cast down, its horses, men, and elephants slain.

  26. Verse 26

gajābhyāṃ saṃprayuktābhyām āsīn naḍavanaṃ yathā tathābhūtaṃ mahat sainyam āsīd bhārata saṃyuge vimardaḥ karṇabhīmābhyām āsīc ca paramo raṇe

As a reed-forest trampled by two elephants joined in combat, so became the great army, O Bharata, in the battle; and the clash wrought by Karna and Bhima was supreme in the fray.
