Verse 1
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca yasmiñ jayāśā satataṃ putrāṇāṃ mama saṃjaya taṃ dṛṣṭvā vimukhaṃ saṃkhye kiṃ nu duryodhano 'bravīt karṇo vā samare tāta kim akārṣīd ataḥ param
Dhritarashtra said: He in whom lies ever the hope of my sons' victory, O Sanjaya — beholding him turned away in battle, what did Duryodhana say? And what, my son, did Karna do thereafter in the fray?
Verse 2
saṃjaya uvāca bhīmasenaṃ raṇe dṛṣṭvā jvalantam iva pāvakam ratham anyaṃ samāsthāya vidhivat kalpitaṃ punaḥ abhyayāt pāṇḍavaṃ karṇo vātoddhūta ivārṇavaḥ
Sanjaya said: Beholding Bhimasena in battle blazing like fire, Karna, mounting another chariot duly equipped anew, rushed against the Pandava like the ocean stirred by the wind.
Verse 3
kruddham ādhirathiṃ dṛṣṭvā putrās tava viśāṃ pate bhīmasenam amanyanta vaivasvatamukhe hutam
Beholding the son of Adhiratha enraged, your sons, O lord of the people, deemed Bhimasena as an oblation already cast into the mouth of Vaivasvata (Yama).
Verse 4
cāpaśabdaṃ mahat kṛtvā talaśabdaṃ ca bhairavam abhyavartata rādheyo bhīmasenarathaṃ prati
Making a great twang of his bow and a fearful clap of his palms, Radheya advanced against Bhimasena's chariot.
Verse 5
punar eva tato rājan mahān āsīt sudāruṇaḥ vimardaḥ sūtaputrasya bhīmasya ca viśāṃ pate
Then again, O king, there arose a great and very terrible clash between the charioteer's son and Bhima, O lord of the people.
Verse 6
saṃrabdhau hi mahābāhū parasparavadhaiṣiṇau anyonyam īkṣāṃ cakrāte dahantāv iva locanaiḥ
For the two mighty-armed ones, furious, each seeking the other's death, gazed at one another as though burning each other with their eyes.
Verse 7
krodharaktekṣaṇau kruddhau niḥśvasantau mahārathau yuddhe 'nyonyaṃ samāsādya tatakṣatur ariṃdamau
With eyes red with anger, wrathful, breathing hard, those two great car-warriors, those foe-subduers, closing with one another in battle, gashed each other.
Verse 8
vyāghrāv iva susaṃrabdhau śyenāv iva ca śīghragau śarabhāv iva saṃkruddhau yuyudhāte parasparam
Like two tigers sorely enraged, like two swift-moving hawks, like two furious sharabhas, they fought one another.
Verse 9
tato bhīmaḥ smaran kleśān akṣadyūte vane 'pi ca virāṭanagare caiva prāptaṃ duḥkham ariṃdamaḥ
Then Bhima, that foe-subduer, remembering the miseries at the dice-play and in the forest, and the sorrow suffered also in Virata's city,
Verse 10
rāṣṭrāṇāṃ sphītaratnānāṃ haraṇaṃ ca tavātmajaiḥ satataṃ ca parikleśān saputreṇa tvayā kṛtān
and the seizure of realms rich in jewels by your sons, and the constant afflictions wrought by you together with your son,
Verse 11
dagdhum aicchaś ca yat kuntīṃ saputrāṃ tvam anāgasam kṛṣṇāyāś ca parikleśaṃ sabhāmadhye durātmabhiḥ
and that you sought to burn the guiltless Kunti with her sons, and the affliction of Krishna (Draupadi) in the midst of the assembly by the wicked ones —
Verse 12
patim anyaṃ parīpsasva na santi patayas tava narakaṃ patitāḥ pārthāḥ sarve ṣaṇḍhatilopamāḥ
'Seek another husband; you have no husbands. The Parthas have all fallen into hell, all like impotent eunuchs' —
Verse 13
samakṣaṃ tava kauravya yad ūcuḥ kuravas tadā dāsībhogena kṛṣṇāṃ ca bhoktukāmāḥ sutās tava
what the Kurus said then in your presence, O Kaurava, and how your sons desired to enjoy Krishna (Draupadi) as a bond-slave;
Verse 14
yac cāpi tān pravrajataḥ kṛṣṇājinanivāsinaḥ paruṣāṇy uktavān karṇaḥ sabhāyāṃ saṃnidhau tava
and the harsh words that Karna spoke in the assembly, in your presence, as they went into exile clad in black antelope-skins;
Verse 15
tṛṇīkṛtya ca yat pārthāṃs tava putro vavalga ha viṣamasthān samastho hi saṃrambhād gatacetasaḥ
and that your son, holding the Parthas as of no account, exulted — set in comfort while they were in distress, in his fury bereft of sense —
Verse 16
bālyāt prabhṛti cārighnas tāni duḥkhāni cintayan niravidyata dharmātmā jīvitena vṛkodaraḥ
remembering those sorrows, that righteous-souled Vrikodara, a slayer of foes from his boyhood, grew reckless of life.
Verse 17
tato visphārya sumahad dhemapṛṣṭhaṃ durāsadam cāpaṃ bharataśārdūlas tyaktātmā karṇam abhyayāt
Then, drawing his very great, gold-backed, unassailable bow, that tiger of the Bharatas, careless of his life, rushed at Karna.
Verse 18
sa sāyakamayair jālair bhīmaḥ karṇarathaṃ prati bhānumadbhiḥ śilādhautair bhānoḥ pracchādayat prabhām
With nets of shining, stone-whetted arrows, Bhima veiled the splendour of the sun before Karna's chariot.
Verse 19
tataḥ prahasyādhirathis tūrṇam asyañ śitāñ śarān vyadhamad bhīmasenasya śarajālāni patribhiḥ
Then the son of Adhiratha, laughing, swiftly shooting keen arrows, dispersed with his feathered shafts Bhimasena's nets of arrows.
Verse 20
mahāratho mahābāhur mahāvegair mahābalaḥ vivyādhādhirathir bhīmaṃ navabhir niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
The great car-warrior, mighty-armed, of great strength, the son of Adhiratha, with great speed pierced Bhima with nine keen arrows.
Verse 21
sa tottrair iva mātaṅgo vāryamāṇaḥ patatribhiḥ abhyadhāvad asaṃbhrāntaḥ sūtaputraṃ vṛkodaraḥ
He, like an elephant checked by hooks, being warded off by the feathered shafts, Vrikodara, unperturbed, rushed at the charioteer's son.
Verse 22
tam āpatantaṃ vegena rabhasaṃ pāṇḍavarṣabham karṇaḥ pratyudyayau yoddhuṃ matto mattam iva dvipam
Karna advanced to fight that bull of the Pandavas, who came on impetuously with speed, as a maddened elephant against a maddened elephant.
Verse 23
tataḥ pradhmāpya jalajaṃ bherīśatanināditam akṣubhyata balaṃ harṣād uddhūta iva sāgaraḥ
Then, blowing his conch that resounded like a hundred kettledrums, the army was stirred with joy like the upheaved ocean.
Verse 24
tad uddhūtaṃ balaṃ dṛṣṭva rathanāgāśvapattimat bhīmaḥ karṇaṃ samāsādya chādayām āsa sāyakaiḥ
Beholding that host, with its chariots, elephants, horses, and foot-soldiers, thus stirred up, Bhima, closing with Karna, covered him with shafts.
Verse 25
aśvān ṛśyasavarṇāṃs tu haṃsavarṇair hayottamaiḥ vyāmiśrayad raṇe karṇaḥ pāṇḍavaṃ chādayañ śaraiḥ
But Karna in the battle intermingled the fawn-coloured horses with the swan-white excellent steeds, covering the Pandava with arrows.
Verse 26
ṛśyavarṇān hayān karkair miśrān mārutaraṃhasaḥ nirīkṣya tava putrāṇāṃ hāhākṛtam abhūd balam
Beholding the fawn-coloured horses mingled with the white ones, swift as the wind, the army of your sons raised a cry of woe.
Verse 27
te hayā bahv aśobhanta miśritā vātaraṃhasaḥ sitāsitā mahārāja yathā vyomni balāhakāḥ
Those horses, swift as the wind, mingled together, shone greatly, O great king, white and dark, like white and dark clouds in the sky.
Verse 28
saṃrabdhau krodhatāmrākṣau prekṣya karṇavṛkodarau saṃtrastāḥ samakampanta tvadīyānāṃ mahārathāḥ
Beholding Karna and Vrikodara, furious, with eyes coppery-red with anger, the great car-warriors of your side, terrified, trembled.
Verse 29
yamarāṣṭropamaṃ ghoram āsīd āyodhanaṃ tayoḥ durdarśaṃ bharataśreṣṭha pretarājapuraṃ yathā
The battlefield of the two became terrible, like the realm of Yama, hard to look upon, O foremost of the Bharatas, like the city of the king of the dead.
Verse 30
samājam iva tac citraṃ prekṣamāṇā mahārathāḥ nālakṣayañ jayaṃ vyaktam ekaikasya nivāraṇe
Beholding that wondrous spectacle, like a festive gathering, the great car-warriors could not clearly discern the victory of either in checking the other.
Verse 31
tayoḥ praikṣanta saṃmardaṃ saṃnikṛṣṭamahāstrayoḥ tava durmantrite rājan saputrasya viśāṃ pate
They watched the clash of those two, whose great weapons were locked close — through your ill counsel, O king, and your son's, O lord of the people.
Verse 32
chādayantau hi śatrughnāv anyonyaṃ sāyakaiḥ śitaiḥ śarajālāvṛtaṃ vyoma cakrāte śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ
For the two slayers of foes, covering one another with keen arrows, made the sky overspread with nets of shafts by their arrow-showers.
Verse 33
tāv anyonyaṃ jighāṃsantau śarais tīkṣṇair mahārathau prekṣaṇīyatarāv āstāṃ vṛṣṭimantāv ivāmbudau
The two great car-warriors, each seeking to slay the other with sharp arrows, appeared most worth beholding, like two rain-charged clouds.
Verse 34
suvarṇavikṛtān bāṇān pramuñcantāv ariṃdamau bhāsvaraṃ vyoma cakrāte vahnyulkābhir iva prabho
The two foe-subduers, loosing gold-wrought arrows, made the sky luminous, as with fire-brands, O lord.
Verse 35
tābhyāṃ muktā vyakāśanta kaṅkabarhiṇavāsasaḥ paṅktyaḥ śaradi mattānāṃ sārasānām ivāmbare
Loosed by the two, the arrows, feathered with heron and peacock plumes, shone like rows of cranes maddened with joy in the autumn sky.
Verse 36
saṃsaktaṃ sūtaputreṇa dṛṣṭvā bhīmam ariṃdamam atibhāram amanyetāṃ bhīme kṛṣṇadhanaṃjayau
Beholding Bhima, that foe-subduer, locked with the charioteer's son, Krishna and Dhananjaya deemed the burden upon Bhima too great.
Verse 37
tatrādhirathibhīmābhyāṃ śarair muktair dṛḍhāhatāḥ iṣupātam atikramya petur aśvanaradvipāḥ
There, struck hard by the arrows loosed by the son of Adhiratha and by Bhima, horses, men, and elephants fell, flung beyond an arrow's flight.
Verse 38
patadbhiḥ patitaiś cānyair gatāsubhir anekaśaḥ kṛto mahān mahārāja putrāṇāṃ te janakṣayaḥ
By others falling and fallen, lifeless in many places, a great destruction of your sons' people was wrought, O great king.
Verse 39
manuṣyāśvagajānāṃ ca śarīrair gatajīvitaiḥ kṣaṇena bhūmiḥ saṃjajñe saṃvṛtā bharatarṣabha
In an instant, O bull of the Bharatas, the earth became covered over with the lifeless bodies of men, horses, and elephants.
