Summary

The play opens with two friends, Shamrav and Ramrav, meeting. Ramrav, who has come from Nashik to Jalgaon, explains he is on a travelling assignment and must roam about for a living. The two then leave to eat, saying 'first the stomach, then worship' (a Marathi saying meaning food comes before anything else). This conversation is overheard by personified organs of the body - the nose, ears, eyes, tongue, hands and feet - and this overheard remark about 'the stomach' sets up the complaint against Potoba (the stomach) that follows.

Karnika asks Jivhatai why she, who usually chatters non-stop, is so quiet and sad today. Jivhatai explains that she has grown very irritated with Potoba (the stomach) - overhearing Shamrav and Ramrav's conversation made her realise that everyone has to struggle for the sake of the stomach, yet all the respect and importance goes to Potoba alone. Moreover, whenever she eats a little extra of something she likes, Potoba immediately starts growling at her, which had even led to a quarrel between them recently, Jivhatai complains to Karnika.

Karnika asks the other organs too. Nasika (nose) says her work of breathing continues day and night, and she does the extra work of smelling as well, yet Potoba does nothing at all - that is her complaint. Nayankumar (eyes) says he always does the work of seeing and even adds to a person's beauty, asking what would happen if he did not exist. Hastakraj (hands) and Padkumar (feet) also list their own duties and complain that Potoba, instead of working, only growls at everyone and makes them all toil for its sake. Karnika too points out her own work of hearing and how important her role is.

After hearing everyone's complaints, Jivhatai makes a decisive suggestion - let us go on strike against Potoba and take our complaint to King Mendu (the brain). Nayankumar immediately agrees to strike and declares he will not look at anything from today. Nasika says she will not smell anything, though she must still breathe. Karnika says she will not listen. Jivhatai says she will not eat at all and will also get the teeth to join the strike. Hastakraj says he will not lift a single morsel of food, while Padkumar decides not to go anywhere near the kitchen, saying this will teach Potoba a proper lesson. In this way, all the organs unite and declare a strike against Potoba.

All the organs go to King Mendu's court, which convenes at once. Everyone hails the king and takes their seats, and they announce that Minister Potoba is also present. King Mendu tells Potoba that all the assembled organs have complained that he does no work at all, only eats and growls at others. Potoba humbly replies that if he shows any disrespect while speaking before the king, he begs forgiveness, but the claim that he does no work is entirely false. He admits that he does growl occasionally, but clarifies this is not directed at the organs - it is simply a habit of his.

Potoba continues that when everyone went on strike, he stayed silent and calm, but they alone bore the consequence - their faces withered from lack of life-nourishment, he points out. King Mendu asks Nayankumar whether everyone is now convinced. He explains that they are all interdependent - just as a nation runs smoothly through everyone's unity, the feet can walk because the eyes can see the path, and everyone's work runs well because of Potoba, since it is through him that everyone receives life-nourishment. Everyone must now understand what suffering follows if food is withheld, King Mendu says.

Finally King Mendu explains to everyone that they are all servants of this bodily kingdom, and for this kingdom to remain safe and function smoothly, everyone must live united - he asks if they now understand this. Hearing this, all the organs agree, apologise to Potoba, and promise never to complain about him again. The play ends on a joyous, unifying note, with all the organs declaring together: we are all servants of this kingdom, we are all one! We are all one!!
