About the author

Nitin Deshmukh (b. 1974) is a well-known poet and writer whose verses cover many themes, often offering sharp, thoughtful commentary on nature and the many lessons it offers. This poem is taken from the September 2009 issue of the magazine 'Kishor'.

Summary

In the opening stanza, the poet says that the sweet song of this creation has taught him how to live. Watching the shimmering moon and stars in the night sky, he realised that this beauty of nature too offers a lesson in living. This reveals the poet's curious and sensitive way of looking at nature.

In the second stanza, the poet laments that in today's chaotic, directionless world, very few people retain a true sense of values. Yet the small lamp lit every evening before the tulsi plant burns itself out to give light to others, and it is this act of the lamp's burning that taught the poet how to live. This expresses the value of sacrificing oneself to be of use to others.

In the third stanza, the poet poses a profound question - no one truly knows what love is, so why does the river feel such deep attachment to the sea? The river's free, unhindered flow constantly towards the sea taught the poet the meaning of selfless love and the value of moving steadily towards one's goal.

In the fourth stanza, the poet describes the parental love of birds. Though small in size, a bird's resolve is mighty - the effort and hardship it endures for the sake of its chicks. The grains fed into the chirping beaks of the chicks - that is, the bird's tireless struggle and selfless sacrifice - taught the poet how to live.

In the final stanza, the poet speaks of the boundless depth of the sea and the calm, steady endurance of the tree. However many storms the sea weathers, it remains calm and unfathomably deep, and the tree stands through scorching heat, wind and rain, continuing to offer shade and fruit to others. Bearing blows for the sake of others, swallowing one's own pain to do good for others - this, the poet learns from the sea and the tree, is the true art of living.
