गिर्यारोहणाचा अनुभव Mountain-Climbing Experience

शाळेला सुट्टी लागणार असते, आणि ईशानला रोजचे खेळ व गोष्टी वाचून कंटाळा आलेला असतो. त्याला काहीतरी नवीन आणि रोमांचक करायचे असते. इतक्यात उत्तर काशीच्या गिर्यारोहण संस्थेकडून त्याला व त्याच्या मित्रांना एका मोहिमेत सहभागी होण्याचे आमंत्रण असलेला ई-मेल येतो. ईशानला आधीपासूनच गिर्यारोहणाची आवड असते; त्याने आपल्या शहरातील एका संस्थेत प्रशिक्षणही घेतलेले असते.

The chapter opens just before the school holidays. Ishan is bored of routine video games, cricket and football, and of reading the same kind of adventure stories; he wants to do something different this vacation. By coincidence, an email arrives from a mountaineering institute in Uttarkashi, inviting him and his friends - Dhairya, Prashant, Aman and Saksham - to join a climbing expedition. Ishan is already passionate about mountaineering and has trained at a well-known institute in his own city; his friends study at the same institute. As soon as the invitation arrives, the whole group excitedly starts preparing.

शाळेला सुट्टी लागताच सर्व मित्र टॅक्सीने ऋषिकेशहून उत्तर काशीला पोहोचतात. वाटेत उंच पहाड पाहून ते खूप रोमांचित होतात. गिर्यारोहण संस्थेच्या साथीदारांना भेटल्यावर ते सर्वजण माऊंटेनिअरिंगच्या मदतीने गंगोत्रीकडे जाण्याचे ठरवतात. उंच पहाडावर गिर्यारोहण करणे सोपे काम नसते; अनेक तासांच्या थकवणाऱ्या चढाईनंतर ते अखेर गंगोत्रीला पोहोचतात.

As soon as the school holidays begin, the group of friends travels by taxi via Rishikesh to Uttarkashi, growing more excited at the sight of the towering mountains along the way. After meeting their companions from the mountaineering institute in Uttarkashi, they decide to trek onward to Gangotri using proper mountaineering technique. The climb over the high, rugged terrain takes many exhausting hours, but the friends finally reach Gangotri safely and, forgetting their tiredness, feel thrilled at having made it.

गंगोत्रीला पोहोचल्यावर मात्र त्यांना अतिशय भयानक दृश्य दिसते. पहाडांवर अचानक ढग फुटलेले असतात आणि त्यामुळे मोठा विनाश झालेला असतो. मंदिर परिसर, दुकाने, हॉटेल्स आणि धर्मशाळा उद्ध्वस्त झालेल्या असतात. अनेक घरे व गेस्ट हाऊस नदीच्या प्रवाहात वाहून गेलेली असतात आणि अनेक लोक मृत्युमुखी पडलेले असतात. आपल्या माणसांना गमावलेले लोक रडत असतात आणि भूस्खलनामुळे अनेक यात्रेकरू अडकलेले असतात. हे सर्व पाहून ईशान आणि त्याच्या मित्रांचा सगळा उत्साह मावळतो आणि ते स्तब्ध होतात.

But the sight that greets the boys at Gangotri is heartbreaking. A sudden cloudburst in the mountains has caused terrible devastation; the dangerous flood has destroyed not just the temple area but also shops, hotels and rest-houses. Many homes and guest houses have been swept away by the raging river, and many lives have been lost in the disaster. People who have lost their loved ones are weeping uncontrollably, and the landslide has left many Char Dham pilgrims stranded in different spots. Witnessing this devastating scene leaves Ishan and his friends stunned, and all their earlier excitement for the climb disappears.

आपत्तीनंतर काही दुकानदार व हॉटेलमालक भुकेल्या, अडचणीत सापडलेल्या यात्रेकरूंकडून प्रचंड चढे भाव घेत असतात - साध्या बिस्किटांच्या पुड्याला शंभर रुपये, पाण्याच्या बाटलीला दोनशे रुपये. ईशान व त्याचे मित्र हे पाहून हैराण होतात आणि दुकानदाराला विरोध करतात, पण दुकानदार 'गरज असेल त्याने विकत घ्यावे' असे उलट उत्तर देतो. मुले काहीही बोलू शकत नाहीत आणि गप्प राहून स्वतःच पीडित यात्रेकरूंना मदत करण्यास सुरुवात करतात.

Ishan then notices that some shopkeepers and a hotel owner are exploiting the stranded, desperate pilgrims financially - a five-rupee packet of biscuits is being sold for a hundred rupees, a fifteen-rupee water bottle for two hundred, and a plate of food for two thousand. Ishan and his friends object to this profiteering, but the shopkeeper angrily retorts that such prices are nothing compared to saving one's life, and that whoever needs the goods should buy them. Helpless, the boys fall silent - and instead turn to helping the injured and hungry pilgrims themselves: giving first aid, bandaging wounds, providing medicines, and sharing the fruit, biscuits and water bottles they had carried with hungry children.

संध्याकाळी भूक व थकवा जाणवू लागल्यावर ईशान व मित्र राहण्यासाठी जागा शोधतात, पण तिथेही मालक प्रचंड पैसे मागतो. याच वेळी अचानक मोठा आवाज होतो - पहाडावरचे एक घर कोसळते आणि त्यातील लोक ढिगाऱ्याखाली अडकतात. ईशान व त्याचे मित्र सर्व विसरून तात्काळ मदतीला धावतात. ईशानला अशा प्रसंगांसाठी खास प्रशिक्षण मिळालेले असल्याने तो मजबूत दोरीच्या साहाय्याने खाली उतरून अडकलेल्या सर्वांना सुखरूप बाहेर काढतो.

As evening falls, Ishan and his friends grow hungry and tired and hopefully approach a house-owner for food and a room, only to be quoted an exorbitant ten thousand rupees for a meal and fifteen thousand for a room. In the middle of this argument, a loud crash is suddenly heard - a house on the mountainside collapses, trapping the people inside among fallen deodar trees and debris. Forgetting everything else, Ishan and his friends rush to help. Drawing on the special rescue training he received at his climbing institute, Ishan descends using a thick, sturdy rope and brings everyone trapped inside safely out. The group has to spend that night on the mountain itself, in the nylon tent they had carried with them.

सकाळी ईशान व मित्र जंगलातून लाकडे गोळा करून धूर करतात, जो हवाईदलाच्या हेलिकॉप्टरला संकेत देण्यासाठी असतो. एक हेलिकॉप्टर धूर पाहून खाली येते आणि जवान अडकलेल्या यात्रेकरूंना व मुलांना सुरक्षित स्थळी घेऊन जातात. ईशान व मित्रांचे धाडसी काम पाहून हवाईदलाचे अधिकारी त्यांचे कौतुक करतात आणि त्यांना वीरपदक मिळावे म्हणून राष्ट्रपतींकडे शिफारस करतात. शेवटी सर्व मित्र सुखरूप घरी परततात आणि हा अनुभव त्यांच्या कायम स्मरणात राहतो.

News of the night's disaster has already reached the army, and the Air Force's rescue operation is underway. At daybreak, Ishan and his friends gather wood from the nearby forest and light a fire, hoping the smoke will signal their location to a helicopter. By chance, a helicopter spots the smoke and descends; the airmen begin evacuating the stranded pilgrims and the boys to safety, with Ishan's group helping the soldiers guide people to the helicopter. When the officers learn of the boys' brave conduct, they praise them warmly and recommend them to the President for a bravery medal. Ishan and his friends finally return home safely, and this daring, moving mountaineering experience stays with them forever.
