kṛtātithyo 'tha rāmas tu sūryasyodayanaṃ prati | āmantrya sa munīn sarvān vanam evānvagāhata
Then Rāma, having received their hospitality, at the rising of the sun took leave of all the sages and plunged into the forest,

nānāmṛgagaṇākīrṇaṃ śārdūlavṛkasevitam | dhvastavṛkṣalatāgulmaṃ durdarśa salilāśayam
a forest teeming with manifold herds of beasts, haunted by tigers and wolves, its trees, creepers, and thickets broken down, its pools dreadful to behold,
Verse 3
niṣkūjanānāśakuni jhillikā gaṇanāditam | lakṣmaṇānugato rāmo vanamadhyaṃ dadarśa ha
echoing with the cries of birds and the shrilling of cicadas; Rāma, followed by Lakṣmaṇa, beheld the heart of that forest.
Verse 4
vanamadhye tu kākutsthas tasmin ghoramṛgāyute | dadarśa giriśṛṅgābhaṃ puruṣādaṃ mahāsvanam
In the midst of the forest, filled with dreadful beasts, Kākutstha beheld a man-eater like a mountain-peak, of a mighty roar,
Verse 5
gabhīrākṣaṃ mahāvaktraṃ vikaṭaṃ viṣamodaram | bībhatsaṃ viṣamaṃ dīrghaṃ vikṛtaṃ ghoradarśanam
deep-eyed, huge-mouthed, misshapen, with a monstrous belly, loathsome, grotesque, tall, distorted, and dreadful to behold,
Verse 6
vasānaṃ carmavaiyāghraṃ vasārdraṃ rudhirokṣitam | trāsanaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ vyāditāsyam ivāntakam
clad in a tiger's hide wet with fat and sprinkled with blood, a terror to all beings, his mouth gaping like Death himself.
Verse 7
trīn siṃhāṃś caturo vyāghrān dvau vṛkau pṛṣatān daśa | saviṣāṇaṃ vasādigdhaṃ gajasya ca śiro mahat
Three lions, four tigers, two wolves, ten spotted deer, and the great head of an elephant, smeared with fat, with its tusk,
Verse 8
avasajyāyase śūle vinadantaṃ mahāsvanam | sa rāmo lakṣmaṇaṃ caiva sītāṃ dṛṣṭvā ca maithilīm
he had impaled upon an iron spike, and was bellowing with a mighty roar. Seeing Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, and Sītā of Mithilā,
Verse 9
abhyadhāvat susaṃkruddhaḥ prajāḥ kāla ivāntakaḥ | sa kṛtvā bhairavaṃ nādaṃ cālayann iva medinīm
he rushed upon them in fury, like Death the destroyer upon living creatures; and, uttering a terrible roar as though to shake the earth,
Verse 10
aṅgenādāya vaidehīm apakramya tato 'bravīt | yuvāṃ jaṭācīradharau sabhāryau kṣīṇajīvitau
he took Vaidehī up on his hip and, drawing back a space, said: 'You two, wearing matted locks and bark, your lives at their end, and with a wife,
Verse 11
praviṣṭau daṇḍakāraṇyaṃ śaracāpāsidhāriṇau | kathaṃ tāpasayor vāṃ ca vāsaḥ pramadayā saha
have entered the Daṇḍaka forest bearing arrows, bows, and swords. How is it that you two, being ascetics, dwell here with a woman?
Verse 12
adharmacāriṇau pāpau kau yuvāṃ munidūṣakau | ahaṃ vanam idaṃ durgaṃ virāgho nāma rākṣasaḥ
Who are you, you sinful ones of unrighteous conduct, defilers of ascetics? I am the rākṣasa named Virādha, who roams this impassable forest.
The translit reads 'virāgho'; the name throughout is Virādha, followed here.
Verse 13

carāmi sāyudho nityam ṛṣimāṃsāni bhakṣayan | iyaṃ nārī varārohā mama bharyā bhaviṣyati | yuvayoḥ pāpayoś cāhaṃ pāsyāmi rudhiraṃ mṛdhe
Armed, I roam ever, devouring the flesh of ṛṣis. This fair-hipped woman shall become my wife, and in battle I shall drink the blood of you two sinners.'
Verse 14
tasyaivaṃ bruvato dhṛṣṭaṃ virādhasya durātmanaḥ | śrutvā sagarvitaṃ vākyaṃ saṃbhrāntā janakātmajā | sītā prāvepatodvegāt pravāte kadalī yathā
When the evil-souled Virādha had spoken these insolent, arrogant words, Janaka's daughter, hearing them, was stricken with dread; Sītā trembled with agitation, like a plantain-tree in the wind.
Verse 15
tāṃ dṛṣṭvā rāghavaḥ sītāṃ virādhāṅkagatāṃ śubhām | abravīl lakṣmaṇaṃ vākyaṃ mukhena pariśuṣyatā
Beholding that lovely Sītā held in Virādha's arms, Rāghava, his face grown pale, spoke this word to Lakṣmaṇa:
Verse 16
paśya saumya narendrasya janakasyātmasaṃbhavām | mama bhāryāṃ śubhācārāṃ virādhāṅke praveśitām | atyanta sukhasaṃvṛddhāṃ rājaputrīṃ yaśasvinīm
'See, gentle one, the daughter born of King Janaka, my wife of blameless conduct, brought into Virādha's embrace, the glorious princess reared in utmost comfort.'
Verse 17
yad abhipretam asmāsu priyaṃ vara vṛtaṃ ca yat | kaikeyyās tu susaṃvṛttaṃ kṣipram adyaiva lakṣmaṇa
'What Kaikeyī desired concerning us, the boon she craved as dear, that, O Lakṣmaṇa, is now this very day fully accomplished.'
Verse 18
yā na tuṣyati rājyena putrārthe dīrghadarśinī | yayāhaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ hitaḥ prasthāpito vanam | adyedānīṃ sakāmā sā yā mātā mama madhyamā
'She, far-sighted, who was not content with the kingdom for her son's sake, by whom I, the well-wisher of all beings, was sent to the forest, my middle mother, this very day has her wish fulfilled.'
Verse 19
parasparśāt tu vaidehyā na duḥkhataram asti me | pitur vināśāt saumitre svarājyaharaṇāt tathā
'Than this touch of Vaidehī by another there is for me no greater grief, O Saumitri, not the death of my father, nor the seizure of my own kingdom.'
Verse 20
iti bruvati kākutsthe bāṣpaśokapariplute | abravīl lakṣmaṇaḥ kruddho ruddho nāga iva śvasan
As Kākutstha spoke thus, drowned in tears and grief, Lakṣmaṇa, enraged, hissing like a cornered serpent, said:
Verse 21
anātha iva bhūtānāṃ nāthas tvaṃ vāsavopamaḥ | mayā preṣyeṇa kākutstha kimarthaṃ paritapsyase
'You, lord of beings, equal to Vāsava, are as though without a protector. Why, O Kākutstha, when I am your servant, do you grieve so?'
Verse 22
śareṇa nihatasyādya mayā kruddhena rakṣasaḥ | virādhasya gatāsor hi mahī pāsyati śoṇitam
'Today, when this rākṣasa Virādha is slain by my arrow loosed in wrath, the earth shall drink the blood of the lifeless Virādha.'
Verse 23
rājyakāme mama krodho bharate yo babhūva ha | taṃ virādhe vimokṣyāmi vajrī vajram ivācale
'The wrath I bore toward Bharata over the craving for the kingdom, that I shall loose upon Virādha, as the wielder of the thunderbolt hurls it upon a mountain.'
Verse 24
mama bhujabalavegavegitaḥ; patatu śaro 'sya mahān mahorasi | vyapanayatu tanoś ca jīvitaṃ; patatu tataś ca mahīṃ vighūrṇitaḥ
'Sped by the force and might of my arm, let my great arrow fall upon his broad breast; let it take the life from his body, and let him fall, reeling, to the ground.'
