Verse 1
saṃjaya uvāca yiyāsatas tataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ pārthasyāśvān manojavān apraiṣīd dhemasaṃchannān droṇānīkāya pāṇḍurān
Sanjaya said: Then, as Partha wished to go, Krishna urged on his white steeds, swift as thought and decked with gold, toward the division of Drona.
Verse 2
taṃ prayāntaṃ kuruśreṣṭhaṃ svāṃs trātuṃ droṇatāpitān suśarmā bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṃ yuddhārthī pṛṣṭhato 'nvayāt
As that best of the Kurus was going to save his own men tormented by Drona, Susharman, seeking battle, followed behind him with his brothers.
Verse 3
tataḥ śvetahayaḥ kṛṣṇam abravīd ajitaṃ jayaḥ eṣa māṃ bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṃ suśarmāhvayate 'cyuta
Then he of the white steeds, the victorious one, said to the unconquered Krishna: 'This Susharman, O Achyuta, together with his brothers, challenges me.'
Verse 4
dīryate cottareṇaitat sainyaṃ naḥ śatrusūdana dvaidhībhūtaṃ mano me 'dya kṛtaṃ saṃśaptakair idam
'And on the north this army of ours is being torn apart, O slayer of foes. My mind is today made divided in two by these Samshaptakas.'
Verse 5
kiṃ nu saṃśaptakān hanmi svān rakṣāmy ahitārditān iti me tvaṃ mataṃ vettha tatra kiṃ sukṛtaṃ bhavet
'Shall I slay the Samshaptakas, or shall I protect my own men, tormented by the foe? You know my mind on this -- which of these would be the better deed?'
Verse 6
evam uktas tu dāśārhaḥ syandanaṃ pratyavartayat yena trigartādhipatiḥ pāṇḍavaṃ samupāhvayat
Thus addressed, the Dasharha (Krishna) turned the chariot back to where the lord of the Trigartas was challenging the Pandava.
Verse 7
tato 'rjunaḥ suśarmāṇaṃ viddhvā saptabhir āśugaiḥ dhvajaṃ dhanuś cāsya tathā kṣurābhyāṃ samakṛntata
Then Arjuna, having pierced Susharman with seven swift arrows, cut off his standard and his bow with two razor-headed shafts.
Verse 8
trigartādhipateś cāpi bhrātaraṃ ṣaḍbhir āyasaiḥ sāśvaṃ sasūtaṃ tvaritaḥ pārthaḥ praiṣīd yamakṣayam
And Partha swiftly, with six iron shafts, sent the brother of the lord of the Trigartas, together with his steeds and driver, to the abode of Yama.
Verse 9
tato bhujagasaṃkāśāṃ suśarmā śaktim āyasīm cikṣepārjunam ādiśya vāsudevāya tomaram
Then Susharman hurled at Arjuna an iron dart resembling a serpent, and a lance at Vasudeva.
Verse 10
śaktiṃ tribhiḥ śaraiś chittvā tomaraṃ tribhir arjunaḥ suśarmāṇaṃ śaravrātair mohayitvā nyavartata
Arjuna, cutting the dart with three arrows and the lance with three, and having stupefied Susharman with volleys of arrows, turned away.
Verse 11
taṃ vāsavam ivāyāntaṃ bhūrivarṣaśaraughiṇam rājaṃs tāvakasainyānāṃ nograṃ kaś cid avārayat
As he came on like Vasava, pouring copious floods of arrows, O king, none among your soldiers, however fierce, could withstand him.
Verse 12
tato dhanaṃjayo bāṇais tata eva mahārathān āyād vinighnan kauravyān dahan kakṣam ivānalaḥ
Then Dhananjaya came on, slaying the mighty car-warriors of the Kauravas with his arrows, like a fire consuming dry grass.
Verse 13
tasya vegam asahyaṃ tu kuntīputrasya dhīmataḥ nāśaknuvaṃs te saṃsoḍhuṃ sparśam agner iva prajāḥ
They could not endure the irresistible onset of the wise son of Kunti, as living creatures cannot endure the touch of fire.
Verse 14
saṃveṣṭayann anīkāni śaravarṣeṇa pāṇḍavaḥ suparṇapātavad rājann āyāt prāgjyotiṣaṃ prati
Enveloping the (enemy) ranks with showers of arrows, the Pandava, O king, swept on toward the king of Pragjyotisha with the swoop of Garuda.
Verse 15
yat tadānāmayaj jiṣṇur bharatānām apāyinām dhanuḥ kṣemakaraṃ saṃkhye dviṣatām aśruvardhanam
That bow which the victorious Jishnu bent -- a bow that in battle brought safety to the fleeing Bharatas and swelled the tears of their foes --
Verse 16
tad eva tava putrasya rājan durdyūtadevinaḥ kṛte kṣatravināśāya dhanur āyacchad arjunaḥ
-- that very bow Arjuna now drew, O king, for the destruction of the Kshatriya race, brought on by your son, the player of the crooked dice.
Verse 17
tathā vikṣobhyamāṇā sā pārthena tava vāhinī vyadīryata mahārāja naur ivāsādya parvatam
Thus shaken by Partha, that army of yours was rent asunder, O great king, like a boat that has struck a rock.
Verse 18
tato daśa sahasrāṇi nyavartanta dhanuṣmatām matiṃ kṛtvā raṇe kruddhā vīrā jayaparājaye
Then ten thousand bowmen, brave heroes, wrathful, having steeled their minds alike to victory or defeat in battle, turned back to face him.
Verse 19
vyapetahṛdayatrāsa āpaddharmātigo rathaḥ ārchat pārtho guruṃ bhāraṃ sarvabhārasaho yudhi
The car-warrior Partha, his heart free from fear, going beyond the (lax) rules meant for times of distress, and able to bear every burden, took up that heavy burden in the battle.
Verse 20
yathā naḍavanaṃ kruddhaḥ prabhinnaḥ ṣaṣṭihāyanaḥ mṛdnīyāt tadvad āyastaḥ pārtho 'mṛdnāc camūṃ tava
As a furious elephant in rut, sixty years old, would trample down a bed of reeds, so did Partha, straining hard, crush your army.
Verse 21
tasmin pramathite sainye bhagadatto narādhipaḥ tena nāgena sahasā dhanaṃjayam upādravat
When that army was thus crushed, King Bhagadatta suddenly charged against Dhananjaya with his elephant.
Verse 22
taṃ rathena naravyāghraḥ pratyagṛhṇād abhītavat sa saṃnipātas tumulo babhūva rathanāgayoḥ
That tiger among men received him fearlessly with his chariot; and tumultuous was that clash between the car and the elephant.
Verse 23
kalpitābhyāṃ yathāśāstraṃ rathena ca gajena ca saṃgrāme ceratur vīrau bhagadattadhanaṃjayau
With their car and elephant equipped according to the treatises of war, the two heroes, Bhagadatta and Dhananjaya, moved about in the battle.
Verse 24
tato jīmūtasaṃkāśān nāgād indra ivābhibhūḥ abhyavarṣac charaugheṇa bhagadatto dhanaṃjayam
Then Bhagadatta, from his elephant that resembled a rain-cloud, overwhelming as Indra, poured a flood of arrows upon Dhananjaya.
Verse 25
sa cāpi śaravarṣaṃ tac charavarṣeṇa vāsaviḥ aprāptam eva ciccheda bhagadattasya vīryavān
And the valiant son of Vasava, with his own shower of arrows, cut to pieces that shower of Bhagadatta's arrows before it even reached him.
Verse 26
tataḥ prāgjyotiṣo rājā śaravarṣaṃ nivārya tat śarair jaghne mahābāhuṃ pārthaṃ kṛṣṇaṃ ca bhārata
Then the king of Pragjyotisha, warding off that shower of arrows, struck the mighty-armed Partha and Krishna with his shafts, O Bharata.
Verse 27
tataḥ sa śarajālena mahatābhyavakīrya tau codayām āsa taṃ nāgaṃ vadhāyācyutapārthayoḥ
Then, covering the two of them with a great net of arrows, he urged on his elephant for the slaying of Achyuta and Partha.
Verse 28
tam āpatantaṃ dviradaṃ dṛṣṭvā kruddham ivāntakam cakre 'pasavyaṃ tvaritaḥ syandanena janārdanaḥ
Seeing that elephant rushing on like enraged Death, Janardana swiftly made a circling movement with the chariot, keeping the beast to his right.
Verse 29
saṃprāptam api neyeṣa parāvṛttaṃ mahādvipam sārohaṃ mṛtyusāt kartuṃ smaran dharmaṃ dhanaṃjayaḥ
Even when the great elephant, having wheeled about, came within his reach, Dhananjaya, mindful of righteousness, was unwilling to consign it and its rider to death by striking from behind.
Verse 30
But that elephant, O sire, crushing (other) elephants, chariots, and horses, sent them to the world of death; thereupon Dhananjaya grew wroth.
