  1. Verse 1

saṃjaya uvāca tataḥ sa pāṇḍavānīke janayaṃs tumulaṃ mahat vyacarat pāṇḍavān droṇo dahan kakṣam ivānalaḥ

Sañjaya said: Then Droṇa, begetting a great tumult in the Pāṇḍava host, ranged among the Pāṇḍavas, burning like fire through dry grass.

  2. Verse 2

nirdahantam anīkāni sākṣād agnim ivotthitam dṛṣṭvā rukmarathaṃ yuddhe samakampanta sṛñjayāḥ

Beholding the golden car in battle, burning up the ranks like fire risen up in visible form, the Sṛñjayas trembled.

  3. Verse 3

pratataṃ cāsyamānasya dhanuṣo 'syāśukāriṇaḥ jyāghoṣaḥ śrūyate 'tyarthaṃ visphūrjitam ivāśaneḥ

As he ceaselessly drew his bow, the swift-acting one, the twang of his bowstring was heard exceedingly, like the crash of the thunderbolt.

  4. Verse 4

rathinaḥ sādinaś caiva nāgān aśvān padātinaḥ raudrā hastavatā muktāḥ pramathnanti sma sāyakāḥ

Dreadful arrows, loosed by that deft-handed one, crushed chariot-warriors, horsemen, elephants, horses, and foot-soldiers.

  5. Verse 5

nānadyamānaḥ parjanyaḥ sānilaḥ śucisaṃkṣaye aśmavarṣam ivāvarṣat pareṣām āvahad bhayam

Roaring like a thundercloud with wind at the close of the hot season, he rained down as it were a shower of stones, bearing terror to the foe.

  6. Verse 6

vyacarat sa tadā rājan senāṃ vikṣobhayan prabhuḥ vardhayām āsa saṃtrāsaṃ śātravāṇām amānuṣam

The lord ranged then, O king, shaking the army, and increased the superhuman terror of the enemy.

  7. Verse 7

tasya vidyud ivābhreṣu cāpaṃ hemapariṣkṛtam bhramad rathāmbude tasmin dṛśyate sma punaḥ punaḥ

His bow, adorned with gold, whirling in that chariot-cloud, was seen again and again, like lightning amid the clouds.

  8. Verse 8

sa vīraḥ satyavān prājño dharmanityaḥ sudāruṇaḥ yugāntakāle yanteva raudrāṃ prāskandayan nadīm

That hero — truthful, wise, ever devoted to dharma, most dread, like Time-the-ender at the close of an age — set flowing a dreadful river:

  9. Verse 9

    arising from the surge of his wrath, thronged with troops of flesh-eaters, filled on every side with floods of forces, carrying away the trees that were the heroes;

    जो अमर्ष (क्रोध) के वेग से उत्पन्न, मांसभक्षी प्राणियों के समूहों से भरी, चारों ओर से सेना-प्रवाहों से पूर्ण, वीर-रूपी वृक्षों को बहा ले जाने वाली थी;

    uttamāṅgopalatalāṃ nistriṃśajhaṣasevitām rathanāgahradopetāṃ nānābharaṇanīrajām

    with heads for its stones and surface, frequented by swords for its sea-monsters, furnished with pools of chariots and elephants, with sundry ornaments for its lotuses;

    जिसकी शिलाएँ और तलभाग सिर थे, जिसमें तलवारें रूपी मगरमच्छ विचरते थे, जो रथों और हाथियों के कुण्डों से युक्त, नाना आभूषणों रूपी कमलों वाली थी;

  14. Verse 14

    with hundreds of great car-warriors for its eddies, garlanded with waves of the earth's dust, very hard for the mighty to cross in battle, and hard for the timid to pass;

    जिसकी भँवरें सैकड़ों महारथी थे, जो भूमि की धूल रूपी तरंगों से मण्डित, संग्राम में महावीरों के लिए भी अत्यन्त दुस्तर और भीरुओं के लिए दुर्लंघ्य थी;

  17. Verse 17

nihatān prāṇinaḥ saṃkhye droṇena balinā śaraiḥ vahantīṃ pitṛlokāya śataśo rājasattama

    bearing to the world of the fathers, by the hundred, O best of kings, the living beings slain in battle by mighty Droṇa with his shafts;

    हे राजश्रेष्ठ! जो बलवान् द्रोण के द्वारा बाणों से युद्ध में मारे गए प्राणियों को सैकड़ों की संख्या में पितृलोक को ले जा रही थी;

  18. Verse 18

śarīraśatasaṃbādhāṃ keśaśaivalaśādvalām nadīṃ prāvartayad rājan bhīrūṇāṃ bhayavardhinīm

crowded with hundreds of bodies, with hair for its moss and grass — such a river did Droṇa set flowing, O king, increasing the fear of the timid.

  19. Verse 19

taṃ jayantam anīkāni tāni tāny eva bhārata sarvato 'bhyadravan droṇaṃ yudhiṣṭhirapurogamāḥ

Him, as he conquered those ranks one after another, O Bhārata, the Pāṇḍavas, led by Yudhiṣṭhira, rushed upon from every side.

  20. Verse 20

tān abhidravataḥ śūrāṃs tāvakā dṛḍhakārmukāḥ sarvataḥ pratyagṛhṇanta tad abhūl lomaharṣaṇam

Those heroes, as they charged, your men of firm bows received on every side; and that was hair-raising.

  21. Verse 21

śatamāyas tu śakuniḥ sahadevaṃ samādravat saniyantṛdhvajarathaṃ vivyādha niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ

Śakuni of a hundred wiles rushed upon Sahadeva, and pierced his chariot, with driver, banner, and team, with sharp shafts.

  22. Verse 22

tasya mādrīsutaḥ ketuṃ dhanuḥ sūtaṃ hayān api nātikruddhaḥ śaraiś chittvā ṣaṣṭyā vivyādha mātulam

But the son of Mādrī, not too enraged, cutting with arrows his banner, bow, driver, and horses, pierced his maternal uncle with sixty shafts.

  23. Verse 23

saubalas tu gadāṃ gṛhya pracaskanda rathottamāt sa tasya gadayā rājan rathāt sūtam apātayat

But the son of Subala, taking up a mace, leapt down from his excellent chariot, and with the mace, O king, felled Sahadeva's driver from the car.

  24. Verse 24

tatas tau virathau rājan gadāhastau mahābalau cikrīḍatū raṇe śūrau saśṛṅgāv iva parvatau

Then those two, deprived of their chariots, O king, the two mighty heroes, mace in hand, sported in battle like two mountains with peaks.

  25. Verse 25

droṇaḥ pāñcālarājānaṃ viddhvā daśabhir āśugaiḥ bahubhis tena cābhyastas taṃ vivyādha śatādhikaiḥ

Droṇa, having pierced the king of the Pāñcālas with ten swift shafts, and much shot at by him, pierced him in return with more than a hundred.

  26. Verse 26

viviṃśatiṃ bhīmaseno viṃśatyā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ viddhvā nākampayad vīras tad adbhutam ivābhavat

Bhīmasena, having pierced Viviṃśati with twenty sharp shafts, the hero shook him not; and that was as if a marvel.

  27. Verse 27

viviṃśatis tu sahasā vyaśvaketuśarāsanam bhīmaṃ cakre mahārāja tataḥ sainyāny apūjayan

But Viviṃśati suddenly made Bhīma horseless, bannerless, and bowless, O great king; then the armies applauded him.

  28. Verse 28

That hero did not brook the foe's victory in battle; then with his mace he felled all his tamed horses.

  29. Verse 29

śalyas tu nakulaṃ vīraḥ svasrīyaṃ priyam ātmanaḥ vivyādha prahasan bāṇair lāḍayan kopayann iva

But the hero Śalya pierced Nakula, his own dear sister's son, with arrows, laughing, as if fondling and yet provoking him.

  30. Verse 30

tasyāśvān ātapatraṃ ca dhvajaṃ sūtam atho dhanuḥ nipātya nakulaḥ saṃkhye śaṅkhaṃ dadhmau pratāpavān

Striking down his horses, his parasol, banner, driver, and bow in battle, the valiant Nakula blew his conch.

dhṛṣṭaketuḥ kṛpenāstāñ chittvā bahuvidhāñ śarān kṛpaṃ vivyādha saptatyā lakṣma cāsyāharat tribhiḥ

Dhṛṣṭaketu, cutting the arrows of many kinds shot by Kṛpa, pierced Kṛpa with seventy, and took off his emblem with three.

  32. Verse 32

taṃ kṛpaḥ śaravarṣeṇa mahatā samavākirat nivārya ca raṇe vipro dhṛṣṭaketum ayodhayat

Him Kṛpa covered with a great shower of arrows, and the brahmin, having checked him in battle, fought on with Dhṛṣṭaketu.

  33. Verse 33

sātyakiḥ kṛtavarmāṇaṃ nārācena stanāntare viddhvā vivyādha saptatyā punar anyaiḥ smayann iva

Sātyaki, having pierced Kṛtavarman with an iron shaft between the breasts, pierced him again with seventy others, as if smiling.

  34. Verse 34

saptasaptatibhir bhojas taṃ viddhvā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ nākampayata śaineyaṃ śīghro vāyur ivācalam

The Bhoja, having pierced him with seventy-seven sharp shafts, shook not the grandson of Śini, as the swift wind shakes not a mountain.

  35. Verse 35

The commander swiftly struck Suśarman in the vitals, and he in turn struck him with a lance at the base of the neck.

  36. Verse 36

But Virāṭa, together with the mighty Matsyas, held back Vaikartana in battle; and that was as if a marvel.

  37. Verse 37

tat pauruṣam abhūt tatra sūtaputrasya dāruṇam yat sainyaṃ vārayām āsa śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ

There the manhood of the sūta's son was dreadful, in that he warded off the host with straight-jointed shafts.

  38. Verse 38

drupadas tu svayaṃ rājā bhagadattena saṃgataḥ tayor yuddhaṃ mahārāja citrarūpam ivābhavat bhūtānāṃ trāsajananaṃ cakrāte 'straviśāradau

But King Drupada himself, joined with Bhagadatta — their battle, O great king, became as it were of wondrous form; the two, skilled in weapons, wrought terror among beings.

  39. Verse 39

bhūriśravā raṇe rājan yājñaseniṃ mahāratham mahatā sāyakaughena chādayām āsa vīryavān

Bhūriśravas in battle, O king, the valiant one, covered the son of Yajñasena, the great car-warrior, with a great flood of shafts.

  40. Verse 40

śikhaṇḍī tu tataḥ kruddhaḥ saumadattiṃ viśāṃ pate navatyā sāyakānāṃ tu kampayām āsa bhārata

But Śikhaṇḍin then, enraged, O lord of the people, made the son of Somadatta tremble with ninety shafts, O Bhārata.

  41. Verse 41

rākṣasau bhīmakarmāṇau haiḍimbālambusāv ubhau cakrāte 'tyadbhutaṃ yuddhaṃ parasparavadhaiṣiṇau

The two Rākṣasas of terrible deeds, both Haiḍimba and Alambusa, wrought an exceedingly wondrous battle, each seeking the other's death.

  42. Verse 42

māyāśatasṛjau dṛptau māyābhir itaretaram antarhitau ceratus tau bhṛśaṃ vismayakāriṇau

The two proud ones, creators of a hundred illusions, [baffling] each other with illusions, ranged unseen, greatly causing amazement.

  43. Verse 43

cekitāno 'nuvindena yuyudhe tv atibhairavam yathā devāsure yuddhe balaśakrau mahābalau

Cekitāna fought most terribly with Anuvinda, as, in the war of gods and Asuras, the mighty Bala and Śakra fought.

  44. Verse 44

lakṣmaṇaḥ kṣatradevena vimardam akarod bhṛśam yathā viṣṇuḥ purā rājan hiraṇyākṣeṇa saṃyuge

Lakṣmaṇa made a fierce clash with Kṣatradeva, as of old, O king, Viṣṇu clashed with Hiraṇyākṣa in battle.

  45. Verse 45

tataḥ prajavitāśvena vidhivat kalpitena ca rathenābhyapatad rājan saubhadraṃ pauravo nadan

Then, with swift horses and a chariot duly appointed, O king, the Paurava rushed upon the son of Subhadrā, roaring.

  46. Verse 46

tato 'bhiyāya tvarito yuddhākāṅkṣī mahābalaḥ tena cakre mahad yuddham abhimanyur ariṃdamaḥ

Then the mighty one advanced hastily, desiring battle; and with him Abhimanyu, the crusher of foes, wrought a great battle.

  47. Verse 47

pauravas tv atha saubhadraṃ śaravrātair avākirat tasyārjunir dhvajaṃ chatraṃ dhanuś corvyām apātayat

The Paurava then covered the son of Subhadrā with masses of arrows; but the son of Arjuna felled to the earth his banner, parasol, and bow.

  48. Verse 48

saubhadraḥ pauravaṃ tv anyair viddhvā saptabhir āśugaiḥ pañcabhis tasya vivyādha hayān sūtaṃ ca sāyakaiḥ

The son of Subhadrā, having pierced the Paurava with seven other swift shafts, pierced his horses and driver with five arrows.

  49. Verse 49

tataḥ saṃharṣayan senāṃ siṃhavad vinadan muhuḥ samādattārjunis tūrṇaṃ pauravāntakaraṃ śaram

Then, gladdening the army, roaring again and again like a lion, the son of Arjuna quickly took up an arrow that would make an end of the Paurava.

  50. Verse 50

dvābhyāṃ śarābhyāṃ hārdikyaś cakarta saśaraṃ dhanuḥ tad utsṛjya dhanuś chinnaṃ saubhadraḥ paravīrahā udbabarha sitaṃ khaḍgam ādadānaḥ śarāvaram

With two arrows the son of Hṛdika cut his bow along with its arrow; and the son of Subhadrā, the slayer of hostile heroes, casting aside that broken bow, drew forth a bright sword, taking up an arrow-guard.

  51. Verse 51

sa tenānekatāreṇa carmaṇā kṛtahastavat bhrāntāsir acaran mārgān darśayan vīryam ātmanaḥ

With that shield of many stars, deft of hand, he ranged the sword-paths, brandishing his sword, displaying his own valour.

  52. Verse 52

bhrāmitaṃ punar udbhrāntam ādhūtaṃ punar ucchritam carmanistriṃśayo rājan nirviśeṣam adṛśyata

Whirled, whirled again, uplifted, shaken, and again raised on high — the shield and the sword, O king, appeared as one, without distinction.

  53. Verse 53

sa pauravarathasyeṣām āplutya sahasā nadan pauravaṃ ratham āsthāya keśapakṣe parāmṛśat

Leaping suddenly upon the pole of the Paurava's chariot, roaring, and mounting the Paurava's car, he seized him by the lock of his hair.

  54. Verse 54

jaghānāsya padā sūtam asināpātayad dhvajam vikṣobhyāmbhonidhiṃ tārkṣyas taṃ nāgam iva cākṣipat

He struck down his driver with his foot, and with his sword felled his banner; and, as Tārkṣya, agitating the ocean, seizes a serpent, so he flung him down.

  55. Verse 55

tam ākalitakeśāntaṃ dadṛśuḥ sarvapārthivāḥ ukṣāṇam iva siṃhena pātyamānam acetanam

All the kings beheld him, his hair grasped, being felled senseless, like an ox by a lion.

  56. Verse 56

tam ārjunivaśaṃ prāptaṃ kṛṣyamāṇam anāthavat pauravaṃ patitaṃ dṛṣṭvā nāmṛṣyata jayadrathaḥ

Seeing the Paurava fallen, dragged helpless like one without a protector, come under the power of Arjuna's son, Jayadratha could not brook it.

  57. Verse 57

sa barhiṇamahāvājaṃ kiṅkiṇīśatajālavat carma cādāya khaḍgaṃ ca nadan paryapatad rathāt

He, taking up a shield of great peacock-feathers, set with a network of a hundred little bells, and a sword, roaring, leapt down from his chariot.

  58. Verse 58

tataḥ saindhavam ālokya kārṣṇir utsṛjya pauravam utpapāta rathāt tūrṇaṃ śyenavan nipapāta ca

Then, beholding the Saindhava, the son of Kṛṣṇā, releasing the Paurava, sprang swiftly up from his chariot and swooped down like a hawk.

  59. Verse 59

prāsapaṭṭiśanistriṃśāñ śatrubhiḥ saṃpraveritān cicchedāthāsinā kārṣṇiś carmaṇā saṃrurodha ca

The lances, spears, and swords hurled by the foes, the son of Kṛṣṇā cut with his sword and warded off with his shield.

  60. Verse 60

sa darśayitvā sainyānāṃ svabāhubalam ātmanaḥ tam udyamya mahākhaḍgaṃ carma cātha punar balī

He, having shown the army the strength of his own arms, once more the mighty one raising up his great sword and shield—

  61. Verse 61

vṛddhakṣatrasya dāyādaṃ pitur atyantavairiṇam sasārābhimukhaḥ śūraḥ śārdūla iva kuñjaram

the heir of Vṛddhakṣatra, his father's utter foe, the hero rushed upon face-to-face, like a tiger upon an elephant.

  62. Verse 62

tau parasparam āsādya khaḍgadantanakhāyudhau hṛṣṭavat saṃprajahrāte vyāghrakesariṇāv iva

The two, coming upon each other, armed with sword-teeth and nail-weapons, joyfully fell to fighting, like a tiger and a lion.

  63. Verse 63

saṃpāteṣv abhipāteṣu nipāteṣv asicarmaṇoḥ na tayor antaraṃ kaś cid dadarśa narasiṃhayoḥ

Amid the meetings, onsets, and downstrokes of their swords and shields, no one saw an opening in those two lions among men.

  64. Verse 64

avakṣepo 'sinirhrādaḥ śastrāntaranidarśanam bāhyāntaranipātaś ca nirviśeṣam adṛśyata

The downstroke, the ring of the sword, the display of the weapons' gap, and the outer and inner falls of the blows appeared without distinction.

  65. Verse 65

bāhyam ābhyantaraṃ caiva carantau mārgam uttamam dadṛśāte mahātmānau sapakṣāv iva parvatau

Ranging the outer and the inner, that excellent path of swordplay, the two great-souled ones appeared like two winged mountains.

  66. Verse 66

tato vikṣipataḥ khaḍgaṃ saubhadrasya yaśasvinaḥ śarāvaraṇapakṣānte prajahāra jayadrathaḥ

Then, as the glorious son of Subhadrā swung his sword, Jayadratha struck at the edge of his shield's arrow-guard.

  67. Verse 67

rukmapakṣāntare saktas tasmiṃś carmaṇi bhāsvare sindhurājabaloddhūtaḥ so 'bhajyata mahān asiḥ

Caught in that gleaming shield at the golden edge's rim, that great sword, wrenched by the might of the king of the Sindhus, was broken.

  68. Verse 68

bhagnam ājñāya nistriṃśam avaplutya padāni ṣaṭ so 'dṛśyata nimeṣeṇa svarathaṃ punar āsthitaḥ

Perceiving his sword broken, leaping back six paces, in the twinkling of an eye he was seen again mounted upon his own chariot.

  69. Verse 69

taṃ kārṣṇiṃ samarān muktam āsthitaṃ ratham uttamam sahitāḥ sarvarājānaḥ parivavruḥ samantataḥ

That son of Kṛṣṇā, released from the battle, having mounted his excellent chariot — all the kings together surrounded him on every side.

  70. Verse 70

tataś carma ca khaḍgaṃ ca samutkṣipya mahābalaḥ nanādārjunadāyādaḥ prekṣamāṇo jayadratham

Then, raising up shield and sword, the mighty heir of Arjuna roared, gazing upon Jayadratha.

  71. Verse 71

sindhurājaṃ parityajya saubhadraḥ paravīrahā tāpayām āsa tat sainyaṃ bhuvanaṃ bhāskaro yathā

Leaving aside the king of the Sindhus, the son of Subhadrā, the slayer of hostile heroes, scorched that host, as the sun scorches the world.

  72. Verse 72

tasya sarvāyasīṃ śaktiṃ śalyaḥ kanakabhūṣaṇām cikṣepa samare ghorāṃ dīptām agniśikhām iva

At him Śalya hurled in battle an all-iron spear, gold-adorned, dreadful, blazing like a tongue of fire.

  73. Verse 73

tām avaplutya jagrāha sakośaṃ cākarod asim vainateyo yathā kārṣṇiḥ patantam uragottamam

Leaping up, the son of Kṛṣṇā caught it, and sheathed his sword — as Garuḍa, the son of Vinatā, catches a falling serpent-chief.

  74. Verse 74

tasya lāghavam ājñāya sattvaṃ cāmitatejasaḥ sahitāḥ sarvarājānaḥ siṃhanādam athānadan

Perceiving the deftness and courage of that one of measureless energy, all the kings together then sent up a lion-roar.

  75. Verse 75

tatas tām eva śalyasya saubhadraḥ paravīrahā mumoca bhujavīryeṇa vaiḍūryavikṛtājirām

Then the son of Subhadrā, the slayer of hostile heroes, hurled that same spear of Śalya's, with the strength of his arm, its surface wrought with cat's-eye gems.

  76. Verse 76

sā tasya ratham āsādya nirmuktabhujagopamā jaghāna sūtaṃ śalyasya rathāc cainam apātayat

Reaching his chariot, like a freed serpent, it slew Śalya's driver and cast him down from the car.

  77. Verse 77

tato virāṭadrupadau dhṛṣṭaketur yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sātyakiḥ kekayā bhīmo dhṛṣṭadyumnaśikhaṇḍinau yamau ca draupadeyāś ca sādhu sādhv iti cukruśuḥ

Then Virāṭa and Drupada, Dhṛṣṭaketu, Yudhiṣṭhira, Sātyaki, the Kekayas, Bhīma, Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Śikhaṇḍin, the twins, and the sons of Draupadī cried out, 'Well done, well done!'

  78. Verse 78

bāṇaśabdāś ca vividhāḥ siṃhanādāś ca puṣkalāḥ prādurāsan harṣayantaḥ saubhadram apalāyinam tan nāmṛṣyanta putrās te śatror vijayalakṣaṇam

And various arrow-sounds and abundant lion-roars arose, gladdening the son of Subhadrā, who fled not; but your sons could not brook that mark of the enemy's victory.

  79. Verse 79

athainaṃ sahasā sarve samantān niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ abhyākiran mahārāja jaladā iva parvatam

Then all of them at once, on every side, covered him with sharp shafts, O great king, like thunderclouds a mountain.

  80. Verse 80

teṣāṃ ca priyam anvicchan sūtasya ca parābhavāt ārtāyanir amitraghnaḥ kruddhaḥ saubhadram abhyayāt

And, seeking to please them, and stung by the overthrow of his driver, the son of Ārtāyani, the slayer of foes, enraged, rushed upon the son of Subhadrā.
