Are you one of the Vasus, or are you of the Rudras, or the chief of the Maruts, or the wielder of the thunderbolt, the lord of the thirty gods?
Verse 4

mama hi bhrātara ime sahasraśatayodhinaḥ| taṃ yodhaṃ na prapaśyāmi yena sarve nipātitāḥ ||
For these brothers of mine are warriors who can each fight a hundred thousand; yet I do not see the warrior by whom they were all struck down.
Verse 5

I observe that their senses have awakened happily, as if from sleep. Surely you are our friend — or rather, you are our father. Here ends the three-hundred-and-fifteenth chapter of the Araneya Parva within the Aranyaka Parva, in the glorious Mahabharata, the hundred-thousand-verse collection composed by Vyasa. Thus the Araneya Parva is completed (21), and with it the whole Aranyaka Parva is completed (3). After this comes the Virata Parva, whose opening verse is this: Janamejaya said: How did my ancestors of old, oppressed by fear of Duryodhana, dwell in the city of Virata in concealment, living unrecognized?
Verse 6
yakṣa uvāca| ahaṃte janakastāta dharmo mṛduparākrama| tvāṃ radidṛkṣuranuprāpto viddhi māṃ bharatarṣabha ||
The Yaksha said: I am your father, my child — Dharma, gentle in prowess. Know me, O bull among the Bharatas, for I have come here longing to see you.
Verse 7
yaśaḥ satyaṃdamaḥ śaucamārjavaṃ hrīracāpalam| dānaṃ tapo brahmacaryamityetāstanavo mama ||
Fame, truth, self-restraint, purity, uprightness, modesty, steadiness, giving, austerity, and continence — these are my very forms.
Verse 8
ahiṃsā samatā śāntistapaḥ śaucamamatsaraḥ| dvārāṇyetāni me viddhi priyo hyasi suto mama ||
Non-violence, evenness, peace, austerity, purity, and freedom from envy — know these to be my doorways. For you are dear to me, and you are my son.
Verse 9
diṣṭyā pañcasu raktosi diṣṭyā te ṣaṭrapadī jitā| dve pūrve madhyame dve ca dve śānte sāṃparāyike || $ suhṛdaḥ suhṛt| chāndasamadantatvam ||
By good fortune you are devoted to the five, and by good fortune you have conquered the six-footed one — the two that come first, the two in the middle, and the two at the end, belonging to the passage to the other world. (Gloss: 'suhridah' stands for 'suhrit'; the extra final vowel is a Vedic usage.)
Verse 10
dhramo'hamiti bhadraṃ te jijñāsustvāmihāgataḥ| ānṛśaṃsyena tuṣṭosmi varaṃ dāsyāmi te'nagha ||
I am Dharma — blessings upon you — and I came here seeking to test you. I am pleased with your freedom from cruelty; I shall grant you a boon, O sinless one.
Verse 11
varaṃ vṛṇīṣva rājendradātā hyasmi tavānagha| ye hi me puruṣā bhaktā na teṣāmasti durgatiḥ ||
Choose a boon, O lord of kings, for I am a giver to you, sinless one. Those men who are devoted to me — for them there is no misfortune.
Verse 12
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca| araṇī tu hṛtāyasya mṛgeṇa vadatāṃvara| tasyāgnayo na lupyeranprathamo'stu varo mama ||

Dharma said: It was I, O son of Kunti, who in the guise of a deer carried off those fire-sticks of that Brahmin, in order to test you, O sinless one.
Verse 14
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca| dadānītyeva bhagavānuttaraṃ pratyapadyata| anyaṃ varaya bhadraṃ te varaṃ tvamamaropama ||
Vaishampayana said: 'I grant it,' the Lord replied in answer. 'Choose another boon — blessings upon you — you who are the equal of the immortals.'
Verse 15

Yudhishthira said: Twelve years in the forest have passed, and the thirteenth has arrived; may the people in whatever place we dwell not recognize us there. (Commentary: 'devoted to the five' means fixed in the five means of self-realization declared in scripture — becoming calm, restrained, withdrawn, forbearing, and composed. 'By good fortune you are devoted' — through the power of former merit; and its fruit is the conquest of the six-footed one. The 'six feet' are the six waves that overtake the embodied being — hunger, thirst, grief, delusion, old age, and death, as scripture declares. The aggregate of these six is the 'six-footed one,' and it has been conquered by you. Among them, the first two — hunger and thirst — arise first, for one just born. The middle two are grief and delusion — grief being the mind's anguish born of separation from what is dear, and delusion being, through great misfortune, the inability to discern what should and should not be done; these two are met with in middle age. The two belonging to the passage beyond — old age and death — arise in the later stage of life. 'Sampraya' means the other world; the two that bear one toward it are called 'samparayika.')
Verse 16
dadānītyeva bhagavānuttaraṃ pratyapadyata| bhūyaścāśvāsayāmāsa kaunteyaṃ satyavikramam ||
'I grant it,' the Lord replied in answer, and once more he reassured the son of Kunti, whose valor was truth itself.
Verse 17
yadyapi svena rūpeṇa cariṣyatha mahīmimām| na vo vijñāsyate kaścitriṣu lokeṣu bhārata ||
Even if you roam this earth in your own forms, no one in the three worlds will recognize you, O Bharata.
Verse 18
varṣaṃtrayodaśamidaṃ matprasādātkurūdvahāḥ| virāṭanagare gūḍhā avijñātāścariṣyatha ||
By my grace, O upholders of the Kurus, through this thirteenth year you shall move about hidden and unrecognized in the city of Virata.
Verse 19
yadvaḥ saṃkalpitaṃ rūpaṃ manasā yas yādṛśam| tādṛśaṃ tādṛśaṃ sarve chandato dhārayiṣyatha || araṇye gatānīti śeṣaḥ| no'smān ||
Whatever form you conceive in your minds, of whatever kind, that very form, each of you, shall assume at will. (Gloss: 'gone into the forest' is understood as the completing sense; 'nah' means 'us.')
Verse 20
araṇīsahitaṃ bhāṇḍaṃ brāhmaṇāya prayacchata| jijñāsārthaṃ mayā hyetadāhṛtaṃmṛgarūpiṇā ||
Give back to the Brahmin the vessel together with the fire-sticks; for it was I who carried them off, in the form of a deer, in order to test you.
Verse 21
Choose yet another cherished boon, gentle one, and I shall grant it to you. For I am not sated, O best of men, in bestowing boons upon you thus.
Verse 22
tṛtīyaṃ gṛhyatāṃ putra varamapratimaṃ mahat| tvaṃ hi matprabhavo rājanviduraścamamāṃśajaḥ ||
Take, my son, a third boon, matchless and great; for you are sprung from me, O king, and Vidura too is born of a portion of me.
Verse 23
judhiṣṭhira uvāca| devadevo mayā dṛṣṭo bhavānsākṣātsanātanaḥ| yaṃ dadāsi varaṃ tuṣṭastaṃ grahīṣyāmyahaṃ pitaḥ ||
Yudhishthira said: I have beheld you, the God of gods, the eternal one, face to face. The boon you grant, being pleased, that I shall accept, O father.
Verse 24
jayeyaṃ lobhamohau ca krodhaṃ cāhaṃ sadā vibho| dāne tapasi satye ca mano me satataṃ vet ||
May I ever conquer greed and delusion and anger, O mighty lord, and may my mind be always set upon giving, austerity, and truth.
Verse 25
dharma uvāca| raupapanno guṇairetaiḥ svabhāvenāsi pāṇḍava| bhavāndharmaḥ punaścaiva yathoktaṃ te bhaviṣyati ||
Dharma said: You are, by your very nature, endowed with these virtues, O Pandava. You are Dharma himself; and once again it shall be for you just as you have said.
Verse 26
vaiśaṃvāyana uvāca| ityuktvānta'rdadhe dharmo bhagabā~llokabhāvanaḥ| sametāḥ pāṇḍavāścaiva sukhasuptā manasvinaḥ ||
Vaishampayana said: Having spoken thus, Dharma, the blessed one, the sustainer of the worlds, vanished; and the high-minded Pandavas, reunited, had slept a peaceful sleep.
Verse 27
upetyacāśramaṃ vīrāḥ sarva eva gataklamāḥ| āraṇeyaṃ dadustasmai brāhmaṇāya tapasvine || chandata ucchātaḥ ||
The heroes, all their weariness gone, returned to the hermitage and gave the fire-sticks to that ascetic Brahmin. (Gloss: 'chandatah' means 'at will.')
Verse 28
idaṃ samutthānasamāgataṃ maha- tpituścaputrasya ca kīrtivardhanam| paṭhannaraḥ rasyādvijitendriyo vaśī saputrapautraḥ śataparṣabhāgbhavet || āraṇeyamaraṇīsaṃpuṭam ||
This great tale — the rising up and reunion, enhancing the glory of both father and son — the man who reads it becomes master of his senses, self-controlled, and lives with sons and grandsons for a hundred autumns. (This is the 'Araneya,' the casket of the fire-sticks.)
Verse 29
na cāpyadharme na suhṛdvibhedane parasvahāre paradāramarśane| kadaryabhāve na ramenemanaḥ sadā nṛṇāṃ sadākhyānamidaṃ vijānatām || samutthānasamāgataṃ bhīmādīnāṃ samutthānaṃ ca radharmarājena saha samāgataṃ saṃmelanaṃ ceti samāhāraḥ| piturdharmasya| putras yudhiṣṭhirasya| cāt samāgatamiti samāsaikadeśabhūtamapyanuvartate ||
And the mind of one who knows this ever-holy narration of men never delights in unrighteousness, nor in setting friends at odds, nor in seizing others' wealth, nor in coveting another's wife, nor in meanness of spirit. (Commentary: 'the rising up and reunion' — the rising up of Bhima and the others, together with their reunion and coming together with Yudhishthira the King of Dharma, is taken as a compound whole. 'Of the father' means of Dharma; 'of the son' means of Yudhishthira. By the force of 'and,' the word 'reunion,' though part of the compound, carries over here as well.)
