Verse 1
śhrī-bhagavān uvācha abhayaṁ sattva-sanśhuddhir jñāna-yoga-vyavasthitiḥ dānaṁ damaśh cha yajñaśh cha svādhyāyas tapa ārjavam
The Blessed Lord said: Fearlessness, purity of mind, steadfastness in the Yoga of knowledge, charity, self-restraint, sacrifice, study of scripture, austerity, and uprightness;
श्रीभगवान् ने कहा — अभय, अन्तःकरण की शुद्धि, ज्ञानयोग में स्थिति, दान, इन्द्रिय-संयम, यज्ञ, स्वाध्याय, तप और सरलता;
Verse 2
ahinsā satyam akrodhas tyāgaḥ śhāntir apaiśhunam dayā bhūteṣhv aloluptvaṁ mārdavaṁ hrīr achāpalam
non-violence, truthfulness, freedom from anger, renunciation, peacefulness, freedom from slander, compassion toward beings, freedom from greed, gentleness, modesty, and steadiness;
अहिंसा, सत्य, अक्रोध, त्याग, शान्ति, चुगली न करना, प्राणियों पर दया, अलोलुपता, कोमलता, लज्जा और अचंचलता;
Verse 3
tejaḥ kṣhamā dhṛitiḥ śhaucham adroho nāti-mānitā bhavanti sampadaṁ daivīm abhijātasya bhārata
vigor, patience, fortitude, purity, freedom from malice, and freedom from excessive pride: these belong to one born to the divine nature, O descendant of Bharata.
Verse 4
dambho darpo ’bhimānaśh cha krodhaḥ pāruṣhyam eva cha ajñānaṁ chābhijātasya pārtha sampadam āsurīm
Hypocrisy, arrogance, conceit, anger, harshness, and ignorance: these belong to one born to the demonic nature, O Partha.
Verse 5
daivī sampad vimokṣhāya nibandhāyāsurī matā mā śhuchaḥ sampadaṁ daivīm abhijāto ’si pāṇḍava
The divine nature leads to liberation; the demonic nature is said to lead to bondage. Do not grieve, O Pandava; you are born to the divine nature.
Verse 6
dvau bhūta-sargau loke ’smin daiva āsura eva cha daivo vistaraśhaḥ prokta āsuraṁ pārtha me śhṛiṇu
There are two kinds of beings created in this world: the divine and the demonic. The divine has been described at length; now hear from Me about the demonic, O Partha.
Verse 7
Demonic people do not know what to do and what not to do. Neither purity, nor good conduct, nor truthfulness is found in them.
Verse 8
asatyam apratiṣhṭhaṁ te jagad āhur anīśhvaram aparaspara-sambhūtaṁ kim anyat kāma-haitukam
They say the world is without truth, without foundation, and without a God, brought about by mutual union, with desire as its only cause.
Verse 9
etāṁ dṛiṣhṭim avaṣhṭabhya naṣhṭātmāno ’lpa-buddhayaḥ prabhavanty ugra-karmāṇaḥ kṣhayāya jagato ’hitāḥ
Holding to this view, these lost souls of little understanding, of cruel deeds, come forth as enemies of the world for its destruction.
Verse 10
kāmam āśhritya duṣhpūraṁ dambha-māna-madānvitāḥ mohād gṛihītvāsad-grāhān pravartante ’śhuchi-vratāḥ
Clinging to insatiable desire, filled with hypocrisy, pride, and arrogance, holding false notions through delusion, they act with impure resolve.
Verse 11
chintām aparimeyāṁ cha pralayāntām upāśhritāḥ kāmopabhoga-paramā etāvad iti niśhchitāḥ
Beset by immeasurable anxiety that ends only with death, regarding the gratification of desire as the highest aim, and convinced that this is all,
मृत्यु तक बनी रहने वाली असीम चिन्ता का आश्रय लेकर, विषयभोग को ही परम लक्ष्य मानकर, और 'बस इतना ही सब कुछ है' — ऐसा निश्चय करके;
Verse 12
āśhā-pāśha-śhatair baddhāḥ kāma-krodha-parāyaṇāḥ īhante kāma-bhogārtham anyāyenārtha-sañchayān
bound by hundreds of cords of hope, given over to desire and anger, they strive to amass wealth by unjust means for the enjoyment of desires.
Verse 13
idam adya mayā labdham imaṁ prāpsye manoratham idam astīdam api me bhaviṣhyati punar dhanam
"This I have gained today; this longing I shall fulfill. This wealth is mine, and this too shall be mine in the future."
Verse 14
asau mayā hataḥ śhatrur haniṣhye chāparān api īśhvaro ’ham ahaṁ bhogī siddho ’haṁ balavān sukhī
"That enemy I have slain, and I shall slay others too. I am the lord; I am the enjoyer; I am successful, powerful, and happy."
Verse 15
āḍhyo ’bhijanavān asmi ko ’nyo ’sti sadṛiśho mayā yakṣhye dāsyāmi modiṣhya ity ajñāna-vimohitāḥ aneka-chitta-vibhrāntā moha-jāla-samāvṛitāḥ prasaktāḥ kāma-bhogeṣhu patanti narake ’śhuchau
"I am wealthy and of noble birth. Who else is equal to me? I shall sacrifice, I shall give, I shall rejoice." Thus they are deluded by ignorance.
Verse 16
aneka-citta-vibhrāntā moha-jāla-samāvṛtāḥ prasaktāḥ kāma-bhogeṣu patanti narake 'śucau
Bewildered by many fancies, entangled in the net of delusion, and addicted to the gratification of desires, they fall into a foul hell.
Verse 17
ātma-sambhāvitāḥ stabdhā dhana-māna-madānvitāḥ yajante nāma-yajñais te dambhenāvidhi-pūrvakam
Self-conceited, stubborn, filled with the pride and arrogance of wealth, they perform sacrifices in name only, with hypocrisy and without regard for the prescribed rules.
Verse 18
ahankāraṁ balaṁ darpaṁ kāmaṁ krodhaṁ cha sanśhritāḥ mām ātma-para-deheṣhu pradviṣhanto ’bhyasūyakāḥ
Clinging to egoism, force, arrogance, desire, and anger, these spiteful people hate Me in their own bodies and in the bodies of others.
Verse 19
tān ahaṁ dviṣhataḥ krūrān sansāreṣhu narādhamān kṣhipāmy ajasram aśhubhān āsurīṣhv eva yoniṣhu
These cruel haters, the lowest of men and impure, I hurl perpetually into demonic wombs in the cycles of rebirth.
Verse 20
āsurīṁ yonim āpannā mūḍhā janmani janmani mām aprāpyaiva kaunteya tato yānty adhamāṁ gatim
Falling into demonic wombs, deluded birth after birth, they never reach Me, O son of Kunti, and so they sink to the lowest state.
Verse 21
tri-vidhaṁ narakasyedaṁ dvāraṁ nāśhanam ātmanaḥ kāmaḥ krodhas tathā lobhas tasmād etat trayaṁ tyajet
Threefold is this gate of hell that destroys the self: desire, anger, and greed. Therefore one should abandon these three.
Verse 22
etair vimuktaḥ kaunteya tamo-dvārais tribhir naraḥ ācharaty ātmanaḥ śhreyas tato yāti parāṁ gatim
Freed from these three gates of darkness, O son of Kunti, a person does what is best for the self and thereby reaches the supreme goal.
Verse 23
But one who, casting aside the rules of scripture, acts under the impulse of desire, attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme goal.
Verse 24
tasmāch chhāstraṁ pramāṇaṁ te kāryākārya-vyavasthitau jñātvā śhāstra-vidhānoktaṁ karma kartum ihārhasi
Therefore let scripture be your authority in deciding what should and should not be done. Knowing what is declared in the rules of scripture, you should perform your work here.
