వాయసం Vayasam

ఓ కాకమా, మాంసం ఎందుకు కోరుతున్నావు? మనుషులు తినడం మానేశారా ఏమి, నీకు మిగలడానికి? నరులు పెట్టే బలి అన్నం తినుకుంటూ ఎన్నాళ్లు బతుకుతావు? తీపి పాయసం వదిలేసి ఎంగిలి మెతుకులు ఎందుకు మింగుతావు? జనమే ఆకలితో అలమటించే ఈ కాలంలో నీకు ఆహారం ఎక్కడిది? 'కావు కావు' అంటూ నీ ఆత్మను చాటే నువ్వు చిరకాలం బతుకు; నీ సరళమైన బుద్ధిని మోసగాళ్లు మెచ్చరు.

The poet asks the crow why it craves meat and lives on scraps and ritual offerings when even people go hungry; he blesses the straightforward, single minded bird with long life, noting that cunning, crooked people will never appreciate its honesty.

కాకికి హంసవంటి అందమైన నడక లేదు, చిలుకలవలె ముద్దుగా పలకడం రాదు. అయినా అది ఏ భేదభావమూ లేకుండా అందరి ఇండ్ల మీద గంతులు వేస్తుంది. కొమ్మల చాటున తీయని పాటలు పాడే స్వరం దానికి లేదు; లోకంలోని పేదల దుఃఖాన్ని ఏకరువు పెట్టినట్లు అరుస్తుంది. పినతండ్రిని 'కాకా కాకా' అని ప్రేమతో పిలిచినట్లు అది అరిచినా, కలుపుగోలుతనం తెలియని మనం దాన్ని చీదరించుకుంటాం; అయినా అది నొచ్చుకోదు.

The crow lacks the swan's graceful gait, the parrot's sweet speech and the cuckoo's melodious song, yet it lands on every home without bias and cries as if voicing the sorrows of the poor; even when we, who lack its sociable nature, shoo it away, it is not hurt.

కసితో మోసం చేసి మంచిది అని నమ్మించే మూర్ఖుడి కంటే, పగతో ఇతరుల ఇళ్లను కూల్చే నీచుడి కంటే, సుఖంగా సంసారం చేసేవారి మధ్య విషం రగిల్చే దుర్మార్గుడి కంటే, ధనం రాగానే పిచ్చి పులిలా మారి సామాన్యుల నెత్తురు తాగే తొత్తుల కంటే, ఎండ్రకాయలా అడ్డంగా తిరుగుతూ బెదిరించి ఇతరుల నోళ్లు మూయించే పాపాత్ముడి మనసులోని నలుపు కంటే కాకి నలుపు మాత్రం కలుషితం కాదు.

The poet declares that the crow's blackness is far purer than the inner darkness of cheats, of those who destroy others' homes, of those who sow poison between happy families, of the greedy who turn into ravening tigers and drink the blood of the weak, and of sinners who silence others by threats.

నల్లని శరీరంతో శ్రీకృష్ణుడు అన్ని లోకాల్లో పూజ్యుడై వెలగలేదా? విషం తాగి నల్లబడిన గొంతుతో కూడా పరమశివుడు శుభకరుడని కొలవబడలేదా? చంద్రుని ముఖంలో నల్లని మచ్చ ఉన్నా అది చల్లని వెన్నెల కురిపించలేదా? మనుషుల తలలు నలుపు, చీకటి దారులు నలుపు, ఆకాశం, నీరు, రాత్రి, నీడ అన్నీ నలుపే. చీకటి అజ్ఞానమూ నలుపే. అలాంటప్పుడు కాకి నలుపును మాత్రం ఎందుకు అసహ్యించుకోవాలి?

Lord Krishna is worshipped in all worlds though dark, Lord Shiva is praised though his throat is blackened by poison, and the moon spreads cool light despite its dark spot; heads, paths in darkness, the sky, water, night and shadow are all black, so it makes no sense to despise the crow merely for being black.

చుట్టాల బలగం ఎక్కువగా ఉంటే 'కాకిబలగం' అని హేళనగా అంటాం. మన పిల్లలను మెచ్చుకునేటప్పుడు మరచిపోయి, 'కాకిపిల్ల కాకికి ముద్దు' అని వ్యంగ్యంగా అంటాం. బాగా వాగేవాడిని 'లొట్టిమీద కాకి లొల్లి' అంటాం. పిల్లల అల్లరిని 'కాకిగోల' అని విసుక్కుంటాం. 'కావు కావు' అంటూ దేవుని వేడుకునే కాకి అరుపు మన చెవులకు ముళ్లలా తాకుతుంది. అయినా కాకి మాత్రం ప్రాణస్నేహితునిలా రోజూ మన ఇంటి మీద వాలి క్షేమం అడుగుతూ వచ్చిపోవడం మానదు.

We mock the crow through sayings and idioms and find its cry piercing, yet like a dear friend it keeps landing on our home every day to ask after our welfare.

ఇంట్లోంచి పొమ్మంటే కుండల వరుసలు వెతుకుతూ ఆలస్యం చేసినట్లు, చీదరించి కొట్టినా ఏ మాత్రం విసుక్కోకుండా, రాయబారిలా చుట్టాలు వస్తున్న వార్తను తెచ్చినట్లుగా కాకి గొంతంతా చించుకొని అరుస్తుంది.

Even when driven out and struck, the crow does not sulk; it cries at the top of its voice as though it were a messenger bringing news that relatives are coming.

చిటారు కొమ్మ మీద కూర్చుని కోకిల కూస్తే జనం 'బళా' అని హర్షిస్తారు. కానీ రోజూ వచ్చి పలకరించే కాకిని మాత్రం ఆదరించక చీదరిస్తారు. ఇది సరైనదేనా అని కవి ఆలోచింపజేస్తాడు.

People cheer the cuckoo that sings from a high branch, yet they scorn the crow that comes every single day to greet them; the poet questions this partial outlook.
