వలసకూలీ Valasakooli

ఊళ్ళో నీకు ఇల్లు లేదు, ఊరి బయట పొలమూ లేదు. కూలి ఎంతనేది తెలియదు, కూలి పని ఏ రోజూ ఉండే పని కాదు. భార్యా పిల్లల్ని ఎట్లా పోషించాలి అనే బెంగ నిన్ను వదలదు. బతుకు దారి లేక కుటుంబాన్ని వదిలి పట్నం చేరి రిక్షా లాగుతావు. బలంగా జ్వరం వస్తే నీకు కాస్త గంజినీళ్ళు కాచి పోసేవాళ్ళు కూడా లేరు.

You have no house in the village and no field outside it; the wage is uncertain and the work never steady. The worry of feeding wife and children never leaves you. With no way to live you leave your family, reach the town and pull a rickshaw; and if a hard fever strikes, there is no one even to boil and give you a little gruel.

ఎక్కువ కూలి దొరుకుతుందని కోస్తా దేశానికి పోయావా? లేబర్‌! పాలమూరు జాలరీ! ఎప్పుడు తిరిగి వస్తావు? ఈ మాటలు పల్లవిగా మళ్ళీ మళ్ళీ వస్తాయి, ఆ కూలి కోసం ఎదురుచూసేవాళ్ళ ఆవేదనను చూపుతాయి.

"You went to the coastal country thinking work would be plenty! When will you come back, labourer, Palamuru fisherman!" This refrain, repeated again and again, sounds the family's longing and grief as they wait for the migrant worker.

గోకులాష్టమి దాటిపోయినా చినుకు రాలలేదు, పశువుల పక్కటెముకలు గుంజుకుపోయాయి, వాగులూ వంకలూ ఎండి వానపాములు చచ్చాయి, చెరువులూ కుంటలూ పగుళ్ళు వారాయి. వాన పడదు, సరళాసాగరం కోయిలసాగరం నిండవు, పైర్లన్నీ ఎండి వరుగులయ్యాయి. ఇట్లాంటి పల్లెలో బతకడం కష్టమని కూలి కోస్తాకు పోయాడు.

ఇంటికి వస్తానన్న గడువు దాటి వారాలు అయ్యాయి, చీకటి మబ్బుల ముసురులో కార్తీక పున్నమి కూడా వెళ్ళిపోయింది. ఇటు వెళ్ళిన జనం అటే చనిపోయే కాలం వచ్చిందని, జలపిడుగు (పెను తుఫాన్) పొర్లి భద్రాచలం మెట్ల దాకా తాకిందని వార్త. ఎక్కడ ఉన్నావు లేబరీ, ఎప్పుడు వస్తావు జాలరీ అని కుటుంబం బెంగతో ఎదురుచూస్తుంది.

Weeks have passed beyond the date he said he would return; in the gloom of dark drizzling clouds even the Kartika full-moon has gone by. Word comes that those who went that way are dying there, and that the great flood-storm rolled up to the very steps of Bhadrachalam. "Where are you, labourer? When will you come, fisherman?" the family waits in dread and sorrow.
