ధర్మార్జునులు Dharmarjunulu

యమధర్మరాజు వరప్రసాదంతో పుట్టిన ధర్మరాజు, తాను ఇచ్చిన ఆజ్ఞలను తానూ తప్పక పాటించే దీక్ష గలవాడు. శాంతి, దయ అనే గుణాలను ఆభరణాలుగా ధరించినవాడు; నిజం చెప్పడంలోని విలువ బాగా తెలిసినవాడు; మంచివారిని ఆదరించి పోషించేవాడు; దానం చేయడం ఇష్టమైన మనసు గలవాడు; గొప్ప పరాక్రమంతో రాజ్యం పాలించేవాడు. అటువంటి రాజును చూసి ఇంద్రప్రస్థ ప్రజలు 'మేలు, బలి!' అంటూ జేజేలు పలికేవారు.

Dharmaraja, born by the boon of Yama, kept the very laws he commanded; he wore peace and mercy as ornaments, knew the worth of truth, cherished the good, loved to give in charity and ruled with high valour, so the people of Indraprastha cheered him with 'Bravo, hail!'

ఇతరుల గురించి చాటుగా చెడు మాట్లాడటం ఎన్నడూ లేదు; ముఖప్రీతి కోసం పైపై మంచిమాటలు చెప్పడం లేదు; సాయం కోరితే చేయకుండా ఉండటం లేదు; మొదట మర్యాద చూపి తర్వాత చౌకగా చూడటం లేదు; మెచ్చినప్పుడు తక్కువ ఇవ్వడం లేదు; ముఖప్రీతి కోసం ఎవరినీ మెచ్చడం అసలే లేదు. పాత రాజుల గొప్పతనం ఎంత తరచి చూసినా ఈ ధర్మరాజే సాటిలేని చక్రవర్తి అన్నట్లు, అన్ని దిక్కులకూ కీర్తి వెదజల్లుతూ పాండవులలో పెద్దవాడైన ధర్మరాజు ప్రజలను పాలించాడు.

He never spoke ill behind anyone's back, never flattered, never refused a plea for help, never honoured someone at first and slighted him later, never gave little when pleased and never praised for mere favour; outshining even the great kings of old, the eldest of the Pandavas ruled the people, his fame spreading to every direction.

ప్రజలు ఎంత గొప్పగా ఉంటే అంత సంతోషించేవాడు కాని, వారి సంపదను చూసి అసూయపడేవాడు కాదు. అందరితో కలిసిమెలసి ఉండటం ఇష్టమే కాని ఎవరిపైనా అసూయ లేదు. వేడుకునే యాచకులకు దానం చేసేవాడే కాని, 'ముందు ఇచ్చాను కదా' అని పంపేవాడు కాదు. రాత్రింబవళ్లు ధర్మకార్యాలతో పుణ్యం సంపాదించాలనే దృష్టే కాని, న్యాయం తప్పి నడిచేవాడు కాదు. ఇటువంటి రాజు లోకంలో ఎక్కడైనా ఉన్నాడా? సముద్రంతో చుట్టబడిన ఈ భూమినంతా ఈ గొప్ప రాజే శాశ్వతంగా పాలించాలి, ఇతరులెందుకు అని ప్రజలు అనుకునేలా ధర్మరాజు ప్రకాశించాడు.

He rejoiced at the people's prosperity, never envying their wealth; he gave to every beggar who asked, never saying 'I gave once already'; day and night he sought merit through righteous deeds and never strayed from justice. 'Is there such a king anywhere? Let only this great one rule this whole sea-girt earth forever, why any other?' the people felt, while Dharmaraja shone.

కోపం కొంచెం కూడా లేదు; పండిత సమూహానికి ఆపదలో పనికొచ్చే కొంగు బంగారం; సత్యానికి రూపమే అతడు; మనుషులలోని భేదాలు తెలిసినవాడు; మంచిచెడులను తానే ఆలోచించి నిర్ణయించగల స్వతంత్రుడు; కొత్త విషయాలపై ఆడంబరం లేని స్థిర స్వభావం గలవాడు. ఇన్ని మంచి (కృత) లక్షణాలు గల ఈ ధర్మరాజును 'ద్వాపర లక్షణుడు' అంటే సందిగ్ధ లక్షణాలు గలవాడు అనకూడదు, 'కృతలక్షణుడు' అనే అనాలి.

He held not a trace of anger; he was a knotted purse of gold to scholars in need; truth itself in form; he knew the differences among people; he was independent in judging right and wrong; steady, without show toward new things. With such good (krita) qualities, can this Dharmaraja be called 'dvapara-lakshana' (of uncertain marks)? No, he must be called 'krita-lakshana' (of golden-age virtue).

ఆ ధర్మరాజు నలుగురు తమ్ముళ్లు ఓటమి అంటే తెలియని శత్రువులను సైతం ఓడించడంలో, యాచకుల దీనత్వాన్ని పోగొట్టడంలో ఎల్లప్పుడూ ఉత్సాహం చూపేవారు. భీముడు, అర్జునుడు, నకులుడు, సహదేవుడు అనే ఈ నలుగురు సోదరులూ చాలా పరాక్రమం గలవారు.

Dharmaraja's four younger brothers were ever eager both to crush proud, unbeaten foes and to wipe away the helplessness of beggars; these brothers, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva, were men of great valour.

ఐదు దేవతా వృక్షాలో, విష్ణుమూర్తి ఐదు ఆయుధాలో, శివుని ఐదు ముఖాలో అని లోకులు పొగిడేటట్లుగా, పాండవులు ఐదుగురూ గొప్ప గుణవంతులై ప్రవర్తించేవారు.

Like the five divine trees, like Vishnu's five weapons, like Shiva's five faces, so the five Pandavas, said the world in praise, flourished as men of great virtue.

స్నేహం, భక్తి, ప్రేమ, ఓర్పు కనబడేటట్లు, పెద్దాచిన్నా అనే భేదం తెలుసుకొని, ఒకరి మాట ఒకరు మీరకుండా, చేసే పనులలో తేడాలు లేకుండా, ఒకరి మనసుకు తగినట్లు మరొకరు నడుచుకుంటూ ఉండేవారు. 'పాండుకుమారులు ఎంతో నేర్పరులు; ఈ లోకంలో అన్నదమ్ముల ఒద్దిక అంటే వారిదే సుమా' అని అందరూ ప్రశంసించేలా వారు ప్రవర్తించేవారు.

Friendship, devotion, love and patience were plain to see; knowing the difference between elder and younger, never crossing one another's word, acting as one without division, each moved in tune with the other's heart, so that all said, 'How skilled are the sons of Pandu; in this world, true brotherly harmony is theirs alone.'

అన్నలపట్ల, తమ్ముళ్లపట్ల సమానమైన భావం గలవాడని ప్రజలు అనుకునేలా పేరు పొందిన ఘనుడు. రాజులందరిలో ఎదురులేనివాడిగా ప్రసిద్ధి, గొప్పతనం కలిగి నడిచే పరాక్రమవంతుడు. సాత్వికులు సైతం మెచ్చేలా అర్జునుడు ధర్మప్రవర్తన కలిగి ఉండేవాడు.

He was renowned as one who held the same heart toward elder and younger brothers alike; matchless among all kings, moving with honour and fame, a man of valour whose righteous conduct even the virtuous praised, such was Arjuna.

అందంలో జయంతుని (ఇంద్రుని కుమారుని) వంటివాడు. దయా స్వభావంలో గరుడధ్వజుడైన విష్ణువుకు, అంటే కృష్ణునికి ప్రాణమిత్రుడు. పర్వతరాజ కుమార్తె పార్వతికి భర్తయైన శివునికి యుద్ధ విజయాలలో పోటీ పడే వీరుడు. నాలుగు సముద్రాలతో చుట్టబడిన ఈ భూమిలో అతనికి అతనే సాటి. అటువంటి అర్జునుని పొగడటం సాధ్యమా? (సాధ్యం కాదు అని భావం).

Is it possible to praise him? In beauty he is like Jayanta (Indra's son); in compassion the dear friend of Vishnu, the eagle-bannered one (Krishna); in battle-victory a rival of Shiva, lord of the mountain-king's daughter; on this four-sea-girt earth he alone is his own equal. Can such an Arjuna be praised in full? (The meaning: he cannot.)

తేరిపార చూస్తే చాలు, శత్రుసైన్యం పారిపోవడానికి సిద్ధపడుతుంది. విల్లు ఎత్తి పట్టుకోవడానికి వంగితే చాలు, శత్రుసమూహం వీరస్వర్గం దారి పడుతుంది. ఇక వేయి మాటలెందుకు? ఆ అర్జునునితో సాటి అని చెప్పదగినవాడు, పోల్చదగిన వీరుడు రఘురాముడే కాని, ఈ లోకంలో మరొకడు లేడు.

A single steady glance and the enemy army turns to flee; a mere bending to lift the bow and the foes fall like felled trees toward a hero's heaven. Why a thousand words? The only one fit to be compared with this Arjuna is Rama of the Raghu line; no other exists in this world.
