చెలిమి Chelimi

ప్రతిష్టానపుర రాజు యయాతి వేటకు వెళ్ళి దారి తప్పి, జాబాలి ముని ఆశ్రమం చేరాడు. తిరిగి వస్తూ దప్పికతో ఒక బావి దగ్గరకు వెళ్తే, బావిలో ఒక స్త్రీ 'కాపాడు' అని ఏడుస్తోంది. యయాతి ఆమెను పైకి తీశాడు.

Yayati, king of Pratishthanapura, lost his way while hunting and reached sage Jabali's hermitage. On his way back, thirsty, he came to a well where a woman was crying for help, and he rescued her.

అక్కడికి వచ్చిన ఆమె చెలికత్తె (ఘార్జిక) రాజుతో: 'ఈమె రాక్షసుల గురువైన శుక్రుని కూతురు దేవయాని. ఒక పొరపాటు కారణంగా వృషపర్వుని కూతురు ఈమెను ఈ బావిలో తోసి వెళ్ళింది' అని చెప్పింది.

Her companion, who had arrived there, told the king with sorrow: 'This is Devayani, daughter of Shukra the guru of the demons. Because of one mistake, Vrishaparva's daughter pushed her into this well and left.'

యయాతి ఆ చెలికత్తెను 'వృషపర్వుడు ఎవరు? అతని కూతురు పేరేమి? బావిలో తోసేటంత తప్పు ఈమె ఏం చేసింది?' అని అడిగాడు.

Then Yayati asked the woman: 'Who is Vrishaparva? What is his daughter's name? What fault did she commit, that she was pushed into the well?' The companion looked at him and began to explain.

'వృషపర్వుడు రాక్షసరాజు. తనను ఎదిరించే శత్రువులు లేరని గర్వంతో రాజ్యమేలుతున్నాడు. అతని కూతురే శర్మిష్ట. ఆమెకు వేయిమంది చెలికత్తెలు సేవలు చేస్తుంటారు. ఈ దేవయాని ఆమె ప్రాణస్నేహితురాలు. వాళ్ళిద్దరూ ఎలాంటి అరమరికలూ లేకుండా కలిసిమెలిసి ఉండేవాళ్ళు.'

Vrishaparva, the demon king, ruled proudly, believing no enemy could stand against him in war. His daughter is Sharmishtha, served always by a thousand companions. This Devayani was her dear friend, and the two lived together in a friendship without any reserve.

ఒకరోజు వాళ్ళు నీళ్ళలో ఆడుకుంటుండగా సుడిగాలి వచ్చి, గట్టుమీద ఉన్న వాళ్ళ చీరలను చెల్లాచెదరు చేసింది. ఆశ్చర్యపోయి వాళ్ళు బట్టలు తెచ్చుకొని కట్టుకున్నారు. ఆ తొందరలో ఒకరి వస్త్రాలు మరొకరు ధరించారు.

One day, as they were playing in the water, a whirlwind came and scattered their clothes lying on the bank. Startled, they fetched the garments and put them on, and in that haste each wore the other's clothes.

అది గమనించి శర్మిష్ట కోపంతో: 'దేవతలే నన్ను తప్పు పట్టకుండా పగలూ రాత్రీ సేవ చేసే రాక్షసరాజు వృషపర్వుని కూతురును నేను. నీవు కట్టిన మైల వస్త్రం నేను కట్టుకుంటానా? నీకింత పొగరా?' అని అన్నది.

Noticing this, Sharmishtha said angrily: 'I am the daughter of Vrishaparva, who sits on the demon throne with unmatched strength, whom even the gods serve day and night for fear of his blame. Shall I wear the soiled garment you have worn? Have you such arrogance?'

దేవయాని: 'ఓ సఖీ, మన శరీరాలు వేరైనా ప్రాణం ఒక్కటే. వస్త్రాలు మారినంత మాత్రాన కసురుకుంటావా? ఇది నీకు తగునా? చిన్నపిల్లవా? నోరు చేసుకుంటావా?' అని ప్రేమగా అన్నది.

Hearing this, Devayani replied gently: 'O friend, though our bodies are separate, our life is one. Will you scold me merely because the clothes got exchanged? Is this fitting for you? Are you a child, to speak so?'

శర్మిష్ట ఊరుకోక మరింత కోపంతో వంకర మాటలతో వెక్కిరించింది. దేవయాని విసిగి, బాధతో 'నేను రాక్షసులకు గురువైన శుక్రుని కూతురును, బ్రాహ్మణ పుత్రికను, నీ వస్త్రం కట్టడం తప్పు కాదు' అని అన్నది. శర్మిష్ట వినిపించుకోక గయ్యాళిగా ఆమెను బావిలో తోసి వెళ్ళిపోయింది.

Sharmishtha, not stopping, mocked her with twisted, angry words. Wearied and pained, Devayani said: 'I am the daughter of Shukracharya, guru of the demons, a brahmin's daughter, so it is no fault for me to wear your clothes.' But Sharmishtha, refusing to listen, became cruel, pushed her into the well, and hurried away.

ఈ సంగతంతా చెలికత్తె చెప్పగా విని, యయాతి జాలిపడ్డాడు. తరువాత మంచి గుర్రాన్ని ఎక్కి తన పట్టణానికి తిరిగి వెళ్ళాడు.

When Devayani's companion had told him this whole story, Yayati listened with pity, then turned back, mounted his fine horse, and rode to his own city.
