నగరగీతం Nagaragitam

నగారా (పెద్ద ఢంకా) మోగినట్లు, నయాగరా జలపాతం దూకినట్లు నాలుగు రోడ్ల కూడలిలో గొప్ప శబ్దం వినిపిస్తుంది. అది నగరం అనే అడవి చేసే హోరు, మనిషి బతుకు పోరాటపు ఘోష.

Like a great war-drum booming or Niagara crashing down, the four-road junction roars; the poet calls it the howl of the city-jungle and the cry of human living.

తల్లి ఒడిలాంటి పల్లెలను వదిలి, బతుకు కోసం నగరానికి వచ్చిన రైతులు, ఇనప్పెట్టెల్లాంటి ఇరుకు పట్టణాల్లో ఊపిరి కూడా ఆడని జీవితం గడుపుతున్నారు.

Farmers who left their villages, warm as a mother's lap, now live suffocating lives in cities cramped like iron boxes.

నగరంలోని ప్రతి మనిషి జీవితంలో ఎన్నో కష్టాలు, కథలు ఉంటాయి. అందుకే ప్రతి మనిషీ చదవదగిన పుస్తకం లాంటివాడు. 'మరి నీ బతుకు?' అని కవి మనల్ని ప్రశ్నిస్తాడు.

Every person in the city is a book worth reading, each life holding its own story; then the poet turns and asks, 'and what of your life?'

ఉదయాన్నే బస్సుల్లో, రిక్షాల్లో, ఫుట్‌పాత్‌ల మీద బడికి వెళ్ళే పిల్లల సందడి కనిపిస్తుంది. వాళ్ళను కవి విరబూసిన 'కాన్వెంటు పువ్వులు'తో, రాలే 'చదువుల పుప్పొడి'తో పోల్చాడు.

At dawn, in buses and rickshaws and on pavements, school-children bloom like convent flowers, scattering the pollen of learning.

సిటీ అంటే మెరిసే అందమైన భవనాలు మాత్రమే కాదు. ఒకవైపు ఎత్తైన భవంతులు, ఇంకోవైపు పూరిళ్ళు. దారిద్ర్యం, సౌభాగ్యం రెండూ పక్కపక్కనే సమాంతర రేఖల్లా నడుస్తాయి.

The city is not all glittering beauty-buildings; mansions on one side, huts on the other, poverty and prosperity running side by side like parallel lines.

ఇక్కడ రకరకాల సమస్యలున్న మనుషులు ఒకే చోట కలిసి ఉంటారు. ఎంత పనిచేసినా ఎవరికీ తీరిక దొరకదు, కోరిక తీరదు. నవ్వులు మెర్క్యురీలా బరువు, నడకలు పాదరసంలా చంచలం.

Here people with all kinds of troubles crowd together; however hard you work, no rest is won, no wish fulfilled, smiles heavy as mercury, steps restless as quicksilver.

కొందరికి రెండు కాళ్ళు, రిక్షావాళ్ళకి మూడు కాళ్ళు (వాళ్ళు, వాళ్ళ రిక్షా), డబ్బున్నవాళ్ళకి నాలుగు కాళ్ళు (కారు). ఈ లెక్కతో కవి సమాజంలోని అంతస్తుల తేడాను చమత్కారంగా చెబుతాడు.

Some have two legs, the rickshaw-pullers three (themselves and the rickshaw), the rich four (their car); through this count the poet wittily exposes class differences.

నగరంలో అన్ని వైపులా మన చూపులు అప్రమత్తంగా ఉండాలి. ఎందుకంటే మహానగరాల రోడ్లకి నాలుగు వైపులా (ట్రాఫిక్ ప్రమాదాల వల్ల) మరణం పొంచి ఉంటుంది.

In the city our eyes must stay alert on every side, for on the roads of great cities death waits on all four sides.

నగరం అనే పెద్ద చెట్టు మీద ఎందరున్నా ఎవరికి వారే ఒంటరి. నగరం అర్థంకాని రసాయనశాల లాంటిది, బయటపడలేని పద్మవ్యూహం లాంటిది.

On the great tree of the city, however many there are, each is alone; the city is a chemical lab none can fathom, a maze none can escape.
