కొత్తబాట Kottabaata

అక్కా, తమ్ముడు ఇద్దరూ బస్సు దిగి, అక్కడి నుండి ఎడ్లబండిలో తమ ఊరికి ప్రయాణం మొదలుపెడతారు. ఊరికి కొత్త బాట వేశామని తమ్ముడు ఉత్సాహంగా చెబుతాడు.

The sister and her younger brother get off the bus and set out for their village in a bullock cart. The brother insists with great excitement that they have laid a new road for the village, while the sister thinks it is only the same old road of generations.

దారి పొడవునా తమ్ముడు ప్రకృతిని వర్ణిస్తాడు. ఎర్రగా పూసిన మోదుగు చెట్లు, తేనెతెట్టెలతో ఉన్న మద్ది చెట్లు, కోయిల కూతలు, చింతలతోపు, నిండైన చెరువు అన్నీ చూపిస్తాడు.

All along the way the brother ceaselessly describes the beauty of nature: the red-blossomed modugu grove standing like married women offering blessings to the new road, the maddi trees full of honeycombs, the calls of the cuckoo, the sprouting tamarind grove, and the brimming tank that, once bunded, became a support for all.

వెన్నెలలో పాదరసంలా మెరిసే చెరువును, పెద్ద చేపలను, ఎలుగుబంట్లను, తన పిల్లలనే మింగే చిరుతను, పాములను, నక్కలను తమ్ముడు చూపిస్తాడు. అక్క మనసులో మాత్రం పాతదాన్ని మెచ్చకపోవడం తప్పేమో అనిపిస్తుంది.

The brother describes the wild life of the forest: the tank glittering like spilt mercury under moonlight, the big fish, the sloth bears scratching termite mounds, the leopard that even devours its own cubs, the python coiled round a tree, the lurking jackals. The sister's own heart counsels her that such hardness is wrong and that one should not refuse to value the old.

ఊరి పొలిమేర వస్తుంది. ఎల్లమ్మ గుడి దాటి, గోపాల్రాయని భవంతి, రంగరాయని మేడ కనిపిస్తాయి. కానీ ఆ దొరల మేడల్లో దీపాలు వెలగడం లేదు; కళ తప్పి పాడుబడ్డట్లు ఉన్నాయి.

They cross the village boundary, pass the Ellamma temple and the priest Kishtamacharlu's house, and see Gopalrayudu's mansion and the brother-in-law Rangarayudu's two-storeyed house. But in these landlords' mansions, which once shone with lamps, the lamp-bowls now gather dust for want of oil; the whole house looks faded and ruined.

ఊరి ప్రజలకు తెలివి వచ్చి, దొరల పెత్తనాన్ని ఎదిరించారని తమ్ముడు చెబుతాడు. రంగరాయుడు ఊరు వదిలి వెళ్ళిపోయాడు; దొంగతనాలు, దోపిడీలు, బలవంతపు పనులు ఇప్పుడు లేవు.

The brother tells how the village people, now grown wise, have turned against the rich Rangarayudu's domination, so that he has taken his wife and children and left the village. The crafty Anumantharayudu's tricks no longer work; thefts, the plundering of fields, forced labour and begging are all gone.

రచ్చకట్ట కింద కులభేదం లేకుండా అందరూ సమానంగా కూర్చుంటున్నారు. మనుషులు మోసే మ్యానా పల్లకీలను ఊరివాళ్ళు అలంకారంగా వేలాడగట్టారు; మనిషి మనిషిని మోయడం ఆపేశారు.

The sister is amazed to see common folk sitting as equals with the headmen at the rachchakatta (village platform), and panchayat verdicts being given fairly in each locality. The brother tells how the whole village together banned the man-carried palanquins and hung them up in the granary as mere ornaments.

ఇంటికి చేరగానే పిల్లలు ఆరోగ్యంగా, పాలేరు బిడ్డ కుసుమ ప్రేమగా ఎదురొస్తారు. అన్నీ చూసిన అక్క "అవును, ఇది నిజంగా కొత్తబాటనె" అని మనసారా ఒప్పుకుంటుంది.

The cart stops before the arch of their house. The healthy, bright children with no runny noses, and Kusuma, the daughter of the farmhand Raju, come lovingly to meet and embrace the sister. Seeing all this, the sister at last whole-heartedly accepts: 'Yes, this truly is a new road; the road many have walked is the real road.'
