வளரும் செல்வம் Valarum Selvam

சொற்கள் வரலாற்றைப் பேசுபவை. ஒவ்வொரு சொல்லிலும் ஓர் இனத்தின், மொழியின் வரலாறு இருக்கிறது. தமிழ்ச் சொற்களின் வழியாகத் தமிழர் நாகரிகத்தையும் வாழ்வையும் அறியலாம்.

Words carry history. In every word lives the history of a people and a language. Through Tamil words we can know the civilisation and life of Tamils; borrowed words too reveal history.

ஆனந்தி தமிழில் முதல் மதிப்பெண் பெற்றதற்காக டேவிட் வாழ்த்துகிறான். கணினித் துறையில் ஆங்கிலச் சொற்களைப் பயன்படுத்துவதைப் பற்றி மும்தாஜ் கேட்கிறார். அந்தச் சொற்களுக்கும் தமிழ்ச்சொற்கள் இருப்பதை ஆனந்தி கூறுகிறாள்.

David congratulates Anandhi for topping in Tamil. Mumtaj points out that many computer terms are used in English; Anandhi explains that Tamil words for them exist in plenty.

பின்ன எண்களுக்குக்கூட (அரைக்காணி, முந்திரி போன்ற) தமிழ்ச்சொற்கள் உண்டு என்று ஆனந்தி காட்டுகிறாள். முன்னோர் பயன்படுத்திய சொற்களைக் கால மாற்றத்தில் கைவிட்டாலும், நினைத்தால் அவற்றை மீட்டெடுக்கலாம். வளர்ந்த துறையின் மொழியே செல்வாக்குப் பெறும்.

Tamil even has words for fractions like munthiri and araikkaani. Words dropped over time can be revived. The language in which a field grows gains influence there, so technical terms should be created in the mother tongue.

வேற்று மொழிச் சொற்களை அப்படியே நினைவில் வைப்பது கடினம்; பேசும்போது ஒலித்திரிபு ஏற்படும்; கேட்போர்க்குப் பொருள் புரியாது. தாய்மொழிச் சொற்களையே எளிதாக நினைவில் வைக்கலாம். அறிவியல் கருத்துகளுக்குக் கலைச்சொற்களை நம் மொழியில் உருவாக்க வேண்டிய தேவை உள்ளது.

Foreign terms are hard to remember, take extra time, get distorted in speech and confuse listeners. Mother-tongue words are easier to retain, so scientific technical terms need to be coined in our own language.

தமிழர்கள் முற்காலத்திலேயே கடற்துறையில் மிகுந்த முன்னேற்றம் அடைந்திருந்தனர். நாவாய் என்ற தமிழ்ச்சொல்லே ஆங்கிலத்தில் நேவி (Navy) ஆனது. தமிழின் கடல் ஆளுமை வழியாகப் பல சொற்கள் வேற்று மொழிகளுக்குச் சென்றுள்ளன.

Ancient Tamils were advanced in seafaring; Sangam records mention many sea-craft. The Tamil word naavaai became 'Navy' in English. Through Tamil maritime mastery many words passed into other languages.

தமிழும் கிரேக்கமும் கடல்வழியாகத் தொடர்பு கொண்டன. பா என்னும் சொல்லும், எறிதிரை என்னும் சொல்லும் கிரேக்க நூல்களில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளன. கிரேக்க நூலொன்று தமிழ்நாட்டிற்குக் கடலில் எவ்வழியாக வரவேண்டும் என்று கூட விளக்குகிறது.

Tamils and Greeks were connected by sea. The Tamil word 'paa' appears in the Greek epic Iliad, and venpa-like poems are called Sappho in Greek. The maritime Tamil word 'erithirai' survives in the title 'Erythraean of the Periplus'.

மொழி நிலைத்திருக்க, மருத்துவம், பொறியியல், கணினி, விண்வெளி போன்ற துறைகளின் சொற்களை உடனுக்குடன் தமிழில் கொண்டுவர வேண்டும். அப்போதுதான் தமிழ் அறிவுக்கான கருவியாக மாறும். மூவரும் தம்மாலான பணிகளைத் தொடர்ந்து செய்வோம் என்று உறுதி கூறி விடைபெறுகின்றனர்.

To keep Tamil alive, terms from medicine, engineering, computing and space must be brought into it promptly; only then does Tamil become a tool for knowledge, and its philosophy and politics can travel to other tongues. The three vow to keep doing their part and take leave.
