தண்ணீர் Thanneer

வெயில் கொஞ்சம் தணிந்த மாலை நேரம். அந்த ஊரிலும் அக்கம்பக்கத்து ஊர்களிலும் கிணறுகளில் உப்புத் தண்ணீர்தான். அம்மாவுக்கு ஒரு சொட்டுக் குடிதண்ணீர் கூட இல்லை.

As the harsh sun began to cool, the village and the villages around it lay parched. The well water was so salty it could have made a salt pan; good drinking water had become rare.

ஊரில் தண்ணீர் இல்லாததால், ரயிலில் வரும் தண்ணீர்க் குழாயை நம்பிப் பெண்கள் வாழ்ந்தார்கள். மூன்று மணி பாசஞ்சர் ரயில் வரும்போது குடங்களோடு குழாயில் தண்ணீர் பிடிக்க ஓடினார்கள்.

Since the village had no drinking water, the women relied on the water tap of the train that halted at the station. For the three o'clock passenger train they came as early as noon with their pots to claim a spot.

இந்திரா மிகவும் கெட்டிக்காரப் பெண். எல்லோருக்கும் முன்பாக இடம்பிடித்துத் தண்ணீர் பிடித்தாள். ஆனால் அன்று குழாயில் தண்ணீர் மெல்ல மெல்லத்தான் வந்தது; அரைக் குடம் கூட நிறையவில்லை.

Indira was a very clever, calm girl who claimed her place ahead of everyone. But that day the water trickled out thinly; the pot did not fill even halfway.

தண்ணீர் முழுவதும் நிறையும் முன்பே ரயில் நகர ஆரம்பித்தது. குடத்தை விட்டுக் கீழே குதிக்கப் போனாள் இந்திரா. ஆனால் வேற்று மொழி பேசும் ஒரு வடநாட்டுப் பெண் அவளை இழுத்து வண்டிக்குள் தள்ளிவிட்டாள்.

Before the pot filled, the train picked up speed and moved off. As she set the pot down and tried to jump, a northern woman wearing glass bangles pulled her in and pushed her into the carriage, scolding her angrily as if to say, did you try to kill yourself?

இந்திரா ரயிலில் சென்றுவிட்டாள் என்று தம்பி ஓடி வந்து சொன்னான். ஐயா முதலில் சாதாரணமாக எடுத்துக்கொண்டார். அம்மா பதறி, அடுத்த ஊர்களுக்கு ஆட்களை அனுப்பித் தேடச் சொன்னாள்.

Her little brother ran up shouting that Indira had gone off on the train. Though the father took it very calmly, the mother panicked and sent relatives and others rushing to catch her at the next stations.

ஆட்கள் ராமநாதபுரம் ரயில் நிலையம் வரை சென்று, தெரிந்த வீடுகள் எல்லாவற்றிலும் தேடினார்கள். குடத்தோடு ஒரு பெண் இறங்கினாளா என்று கேட்டார்கள். யாரும் பார்த்ததாகச் சொல்லவில்லை. ஐயாவும் ஊர் ஜனமும் கவலையோடு திரும்பினார்கள்.

The men went as far as Ramanathapuram and combed every known house, the aunt's, the relatives'. To everyone they asked whether a girl with a pot had got down, but none had seen her; weary and worried they returned to the village.

பொழுது இருட்டிய நேரம். தூரத்தில் ஒரு உருவம் தெரிந்தது. நெருங்க நெருங்க அது இந்திராதான். இடுப்பில் நிறைகுடத்தோடு, ஒரு சொட்டுக் கூடச் சிந்தாமல், அவள் வந்து சேர்ந்தாள். அவ்வளவு துன்பத்திலும் அவள் தண்ணீரைக் காப்பாற்றியதே கதையின் இறுதிப் பெருமை.

Darkness had fallen; a figure seen in the distance came nearer and it was Indira. With a brimful pot on her hip and not a drop spilled, she reached home. The parents glowed at their daughter's return; the water she had guarded through all that hardship is the story's high point.
