தாய்மைக்கு வறட்சி இல்லை! Thaaimaikku Varatchi Illai

கர்நாடகத்தில், குல்பர்கா நகரைத் தாண்டிய ஒரு தேசிய நெடுஞ்சாலையின் அருகே ஒரு திராட்சைத் தோட்டம் இருந்தது. அந்தத் தோட்டத்தின் முன்பகுதியில் ஒரு சிறிய கல்மாளிகை; அதையொட்டி, கதவே இல்லாத ஒரு சிறிய குடிசை இருந்தது.

In Karnataka, beside a national highway past the city of Gulbarga and near the forests, lay a grape garden. At its front stood a small stone mansion, and next to it a doorless hut.

அந்தக் குடிசையின் முன், ஒரு ஏழைக் கூலிக் குடும்பமே சுருண்டு கிடந்தது. களைத்துப்போன கணவன் குப்புறப் படுத்திருந்தான். அழுக்கடைந்த புடவையோடு மனைவி, மூன்று வயதுப் பெண்குழந்தை, ஒரு வயதுக் குழந்தை, இரண்டு சடை நாய்க்குட்டிகள் என அனைவரும் தூங்கிக் கிடந்தனர்.

Before the hut, the whole family lay curled on the ground. The husband lay face-down, worn out; nearby were the wife in a tar-dark sari, a three-year-old girl, a one-year-old baby, and two matted stray puppies.

திடீரென்று ஒரு ஜீப் புழுதி பறக்க அங்கே வந்து நின்றது. அதிலிருந்து சில அதிகாரிகள் இறங்கினர். சுமார் நாற்பத்து ஐந்து வயது அதிகாரி ஒருவரே தலைமை; மற்றவர்கள் அவருக்குப் பயந்து, அந்தஸ்துப்படி மாளிகைப் படிகளில் உட்கார்ந்தனர். பியூன் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் வாழையிலை போட்டு உணவு பரிமாறினான்.

Suddenly a jeep pulled up in a cloud of dust. Officials stepped out; the senior one, about forty-five, led them, and the rest sat by rank on the mansion steps in fearful deference. A peon laid banana leaves and served them food.

அந்த அதிகாரி, ஏழைக் கூலிக் குடும்பத்தைத் தன்னருகே வரச் சைகை செய்தார். தயங்கிய அவனுக்குப் பிரியாணி, முட்டை, வெஜிடபிள் பிரியாணி, உருளைக்கிழங்குப் பொரியல், சப்பாத்திகள் ஆகியவற்றைக் கொடுத்தார். பஞ்சத்தால் பழகிய அந்தக் குடும்பம் அவற்றை மெல்ல மெல்லச் சுவைத்து உண்டது.

The officer beckoned the poor labouring family near and gave them biryani, an egg, vegetable biryani, potato fry and chapatis. Used to famine, the family ate slowly, savouring each bite as if afraid it would run out.

உண்ணும்போதே மனைவி தன் கணவன், குழந்தைகளோடு உணவைப் பகிர்ந்தாள். பசியோடு வாலாட்டிய நாய்க்குட்டிகளுக்கும் சப்பாத்தித் துண்டுகளைப் போட்டாள். தன் வயிற்றில் பசி குத்தினாலும், மற்றவர்களை அனுதாபத்துடன் பார்த்தாள்.

Even as she ate, the wife shared the food with her husband and children, and tossed pieces of chapati to the tail-wagging puppies. Though hunger pricked her own stomach, she looked on the others with sympathy.

கணவன் அதிகாரியிடம் தன் நியாயத்தைச் சொன்னான்: 'என் வேர்வையில் விளைந்த திராட்சையை விற்று எஜமானர் லட்சம் லட்சமாய்ச் சம்பாதித்தார்; ஆனால் எனக்குச் சம்பளம் கூட்டவில்லை. இப்போது சம்பளமே இல்லை, போய்விடு என்கிறீர்கள். இது என்ன நியாயம் சாமி?' மொழி புரியாவிட்டாலும், அந்த மனிதநேயம் இருவருக்கும் புரிந்தது.

The husband poured out his grievance to the officer: the master earned lakhs selling grapes grown by his sweat, yet never raised his wages, and now there is no work and he is told to leave. Though their languages differed, the human feeling behind the words was understood by both.

அதிகாரியும் தன் உணவில் பெரும்பகுதியை நாய்க்குட்டிகளுக்கே போட்டார். ஒரு குழந்தை எறிந்த கல் ஒரு நாய்க்குட்டியின் மீது பட்டது; உடனே மனைவி ஓடிவந்து, குழந்தையைக் கண்டித்து, அந்த ஈனமான நாய்க்குட்டியைத் தூக்கி, அதன் முதுகைத் தடவி, தன் தட்டில் இருந்த உணவைக் கவளம் கவளமாய் அதற்கு ஊட்டினாள். பஞ்சத்திலும் வற்றாத தாய்மையின் கருணை இங்கே மலர்ந்தது.

The officer too gave most of his food to the puppies. When a stone flung by the little girl struck a pup, the mother rushed over, scolded the child, lifted the feeble pup, stroked its back and fed it mouthful by mouthful from her own plate. The famine had dried the land, but motherhood's compassion had not run dry.
