தமிழ்விடு தூது Tamizhvidu Thoothu

தமிழ்ச் சிற்றிலக்கிய வகைகளுள் 'தூது' என்பதும் ஒன்று. இதை வாயில் இலக்கியம், சந்து இலக்கியம் என்றும் அழைப்பர். காதல் கொண்ட ஒருவர் தம் அன்பைப் புலப்படுத்தி, மாலையை வாங்கிவருமாறு அன்னம் முதல் வண்டு வரை பத்துப் பொருள்களைத் தூதாக அனுப்புவதாக, கலிவெண்பாவால் பாடப்படுவது.

'Thoothu' (messenger poem) is one type of Tamil minor literature, also called vayil ilakkiyam or sandhu ilakkiyam. A lover sends one of ten messengers, from the swan to the bee, to convey love and bring back a garland, composed in the kalivenpa metre.

தமிழ்விடு தூது என்னும் இந்நூலில், மதுரையில் கோவில் கொண்டிருக்கும் சொக்கநாதர் மீது காதல் கொண்ட ஒருத்தி, தன் காதலைக் கூறிவருமாறு தமிழ்மொழியையே தூதாக அனுப்புகிறாள். இந்நூல் 268 கண்ணிகளைக் கொண்டது. இங்கே தமிழின் சிறப்புகளைக் கூறும் சில கண்ணிகள் (69 முதல் 76 வரை) இடம்பெற்றுள்ளன.

In Tamizhvidu Thoothu, a woman in love with Sokkanathar enshrined at Madurai sends the Tamil language itself as her messenger. The work has 268 verses; verses 69 to 76, which describe the greatness of Tamil, appear in this lesson.

தமிழே! நீ இனிக்கும் தெளிந்த தேன் போன்றவள்; அந்த அமிழ்தினும் மேலான வீடுபேறு தரும் இனிய கனி போன்றவள். அறிவால் உண்ணப்படும் தேனே! உன்னிடம் நான் மகிழ்ந்து சொல்லும் ஒரு வேண்டுகோள் உண்டு; அதைக் கேட்பாயாக.

O Tamil, you are like sweet clear nectar, and like a fruit that grants liberation, sweeter than that nectar. O honey tasted by the mind, I have one glad request to make of you; hear it.

தமிழே! உன்னிடமிருந்து குறவஞ்சி, பள்ளு என்னும் நூல்களைப் புலவர்கள் பாடிப் பெருமை கொள்கின்றனர். பிறர் படிக்கும் வகையில் நீ அவற்றைக் கொண்டிருக்கிறாய். அதனால் தாழிசை, துறை, விருத்தம் என்னும் மூவகைப் பாவினங்களிலும் உனக்கு உறவு இல்லாமல் ஏதேனும் உண்டோ? (இல்லை, எல்லாமே உன்னுடையன.)

Poets sing the kuravanji and pallu works from you and gain renown. Among the three poetic families, thaazhisai, thurai and viruttam, is there any that is not yours? All excellences belong to you.

எல்லாம் உணர்ந்த தேவர்களும் சத்துவம், இராசசம், தாமசம் என்னும் மூன்று குணங்களையே பெற்றுள்ளனர். ஆனால் தமிழே, நீயோ பத்துக் குற்றமும் இல்லாமல், செறிவு, தெளிவு, சமநிலை, இன்பம் முதலிய பத்துக் குணங்களைப் பெற்றுள்ளாய்.

Even the all-knowing celestials possess only the three gunas, satva, rajas and tamas. But you, Tamil, are free of the ten faults and possess ten virtues such as density, clarity, balance and delight.

மனிதரால் உண்டாக்கப்பட்ட வண்ணங்கள் வெண்மை, செம்மை, கருமை, பொன்மை, பசுமை என ஐந்திற்கு மேல் இல்லை. ஆனால் நீயோ புலவர்கள் கண்டடைந்த குறில் வண்ணம், அகவல் வண்ணம், தூங்கிசை வண்ணம் முதல் இடைமெல்லிசை வண்ணம் வரை நூறு வண்ணங்களைக் கொண்டுள்ளாய்.

The colours men have made do not exceed five: white, red, black, gold and green. But you possess a hundred poetic vannams, from kuril and ahaval and thoonkisai to idaimellisai.

நாவின்மீது படும் உணவின் சுவைகள் ஆறுக்கு மேல் இல்லை. ஆனால் தமிழே, செவிகளுக்கு விருந்தளிக்கும் ஒன்பது சுவைகளை (நவரசம்) நீ பெற்றுள்ளாய்.

The tastes of food upon the tongue do not exceed six. But you, Tamil, possess the nine rasas (navarasam) that are a feast for the ears.

தமிழை அடையப் பெறாத மற்றவர்க்கு அழியாத அழகு ஒன்றே ஒன்று அன்றி அதிகம் உண்டோ? இல்லை. ஆனால் நீயோ நீங்காத அம்மை முதலிய அழியா அழகுகள் எட்டினைப் பெற்றுள்ளாய்.
