சிறுபஞ்சமூலம் Sirupanchamoolam

மனித வாழ்வைச் செழுமையாக்குபவை அறப் பண்புகளே. தமிழில் காலந்தோறும் அறக் கருத்துகளைக் கூறும் இலக்கியங்கள் தோன்றிவருகின்றன. அவற்றுள் ஒன்றுதான் 'சிறுபஞ்சமூலம்' என்னும் நூல்.

It is moral virtues that enrich human life. In every age Tamil has produced literature that speaks of virtue, and one such work is the book called Sirupanchamoolam.

பூவாது காய்க்கும் மரம் உள; நன்று அறிவார், மூவாது முத்தவர், நூல் வல்லார்; தாவா, விதையாமை நாறுவ வித்து உள; மேதைக்கு உரையாமை செல்லும் உணர்வு.

“There are trees that bear fruit without flowering; those who know well, though young, are the elders, the masters of learning; without flaw, there are seeds that sprout without being sown; for the man of intellect, understanding moves on without being told.” (Verse no. 22)

பூக்காமலே சில மரங்கள் காய்ப்பதுண்டு. அதைப்போலவே, நன்மை தீமைகளை நன்கு அறிபவர் இளம் வயதில் இருந்தாலும் மூத்தவரோடு எண்ணத் தக்கவரே ஆவார். விதை விதைக்காமலே தானே முளைத்து வளரும் விதைகளும் உள்ளன. அதைப்போலவே மேதையரும் பிறர் சொல்லித் தராமலேயே எதையும் தாமே உணர்ந்துகொள்வர்.

Some trees do bear fruit without ever flowering; in the same way, one who well knows good and evil, though young in years, deserves to be counted among the elders. There are also seeds that sprout and grow on their own without being sown; likewise, the intellect grasps everything by itself, without anyone teaching it.

இப்பாடலில் இயற்கையை எடுத்துக்காட்டாகக் காட்டி உவமை செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. எனவே இங்கு உவமையணி வந்துள்ளது.

The poem uses an illustrative simile, so the figure of speech here is the simile (uvamai-ani).
