சிற்பக்கலை Sirpakkalai

கல், உலோகம், செங்கல், மரம் போன்றவற்றில் கண்ணையும் கருத்தையும் கவரும் வகையில் உருவம் அமைக்கும் கலையே சிற்பக்கலை. கல்லில் சிற்பிகள் வடித்த கவிதைகளே சிற்பங்கள்.

Sculpture is the art of shaping form in stone, metal, brick or wood in a way that captures the eye and the mind. The sculptures Tamil artists carved in stone are like poems in stone.

முன்பகுதியும் பின்பகுதியும் தெளிவாகத் தெரியும் முழு உருவச் சிற்பங்கள், முன்பகுதி மட்டும் தெரியும் புடைப்புச் சிற்பங்கள் என இரண்டு வகை உண்டு.

By form, sculptures are of two kinds: full sculptures whose front and back are both clearly seen, and relief sculptures where only the front shows. Reliefs are seen on temple floors, towers, pillars and walls.

தொல்காப்பியம், சிலப்பதிகாரம், மணிமேகலை, திவாகர நிகண்டு போன்ற பழந்தமிழ் நூல்களில் சிற்பக்கலை பற்றிய குறிப்புகள் உள்ளன. போரில் இறந்த வீரருக்கு நடப்படும் நடுகல்லில் அவ்வீரர் உருவம் பொறிக்கப்பெறும்.

Old Tamil works such as Tholkappiyam, Silappathikaram, Manimekalai and Thivakara Nikandu mention sculpture. On the memorial stone (nadukal) raised for a fallen hero, the hero's figure was carved as an early example.

பல்லவர் காலத்தில் சுதையாலும் கருங்கல்லாலும் சிற்பங்கள் அமைக்கப்பட்டன. மாமல்லபுரப் பாறைகளில் செதுக்கப்பட்ட சிற்பங்களும் பஞ்ச பாண்டவர் இரதங்களும், காஞ்சி கைலாசநாதர், வைகுந்தப் பெருமாள் கோவில்களும் சிறந்த சான்றுகள்.

In the Pallava age sculptures were made of stucco and black stone; the artists were praised as poets in stone. The Mamallapuram rock carvings, the Pancha Pandava rathas, and the Kanchi Kailasanathar and Vaikuntha Perumal temples are its finest proofs.

பாண்டியர் காலக் குகைக்கோவில்களிலும், கழுகுமலை வெட்டுவான்கோவிலிலும் சிற்பங்கள் நிறைந்துள்ளன. சோழர் காலத்தில் சிற்பக்கலை விரைவாக வளர்ந்தது; தஞ்சைப் பெரியகோவிலும் செப்புத் திருமேனிகளும் சிறந்தவை. விஜயநகர மன்னர்கள் உயர்ந்த கோபுரங்களையும், நாயக்கர் ஆயிரங்கால் மண்டபங்களையும் அமைத்தனர்.

Pandya cave temples and the Kazhugumalai Vettuvankoil are full of carvings. Under the Cholas the art grew fast; the Thanjavur Big Temple and the bronze idols are treasures. Vijayanagar kings raised tall towers, and the Nayaks built thousand-pillar halls and musical pillars.

பௌத்த மதத்தைத் தழுவிய தமிழர் புத்தரை அமர்ந்த, நின்ற, கிடந்த நிலைகளில் சிற்பங்களாகப் படைத்து வழிபட்டனர். சமண மதத்தினர் அருகக் கடவுள் உருவத்தையும் இருபத்துநான்கு தீர்த்தங்கரர் உருவங்களையும் சிற்பங்களாக்கினர்.

Tamils who followed Buddhism made and worshipped images of the Buddha in seated, standing and reclining poses. Followers of Jainism carved the image of Arugan and the twenty-four Tirthankaras, as at the rock near Senji in Villupuram district.

பிற நாட்டுச் சிற்பங்களைக் காட்டிலும் தமிழகச் சிற்பங்கள் தனித்தன்மையுடன் விளங்குகின்றன. இன்றும் கோவில்களிலும், அரங்குகள், காட்சிக்கூடங்கள், வரவேற்பறைகளிலும் சிற்பங்கள் அமைக்கப்படுகின்றன; வெளிநாடுகளுக்கு ஏற்றுமதியாகின்றன. இந்தச் சிறப்புமிக்க கலையைப் போற்றிப் பாதுகாப்பது நம் கடமை.

Tamil sculptures stand apart from those of other lands, carrying elements of yoga and dance. Today sculptures appear beyond temples, in halls, galleries and reception rooms, and are exported abroad. Since they are mature history, it is our duty to cherish and protect this noble art.
