சந்தை Sandhai

பூஞ்சோலை கிராமத்தைச் சேர்ந்த தணிகாசலம் தாத்தா, புதுச்சேரியில் உள்ள தம் மகள் வீட்டிற்கு வருகிறார். அவருடன் பேரன் மூர்த்தியும் பேர்த்தி கீர்த்தனாவும் பேசுகிறார்கள்.

Thanikasalam, a grandfather from Poonjolai village who had served as a panchayat leader and farmed in the traditional way, visits his daughter's house in Puducherry. His grandson Murthi and granddaughter Keerthana talk with him.

கீர்த்தனா, ஊரில் புதிதாகத் திறந்த 'மால்' ஒன்றைப் பார்க்கப் போகலாமா என்று கேட்கிறாள். மூர்த்தி தாத்தாவிடம் சந்தை என்றால் என்ன என்று விளக்கச் சொல்கிறான்.

Keerthana is curious about a new mall in town. Murthi explains that a mall has all shops, a cinema and a restaurant in one place, and asks his grandfather to explain clearly what a market is.

மக்கள் வேட்டையாடி வாழ்ந்த காலத்தில் சந்தை இல்லை. பின்னர் உற்பத்தி பெருகியதும் ஒன்றைக் கொடுத்து இன்னொன்று வாங்கும் பண்டமாற்று முறை தோன்றியது. முச்சந்தி, நாற்சந்தியில் மக்கள் கூடிக் கடை விரித்ததே சந்தை ஆனது.

When people lived as nomadic hunters there was no common market. As production grew, a barter system of exchanging goods arose. Where people gathered at junctions and crossroads they spread their stalls, and this grew into the common trading place called the market.

கிராமச் சந்தையில் கடுகு, சீரகம் முதல் காய்கறி, தானியம், கால்நடைகள், அலங்காரப் பொருள்கள் வரை எல்லாம் கிடைக்கும். கலப்படம் இல்லாத நேர்மையே அதன் அடிப்படை. பல பேருக்கு வேலை வாய்ப்பும் தந்தது.

The village market is small-scale trade selling locally grown food and what is needed for farming, cooking and the home. Its foundation is honesty without adulteration; hundreds of villagers shared their goods honestly, and it gave many people work.

ஒவ்வொரு ஊருக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு சந்தை சிறப்பு. மணப்பாறை மாட்டுச் சந்தை, அய்யலூர் ஆட்டுச் சந்தை, ஒட்டன்சத்திரம் காய்கறிச் சந்தை, நாகப்பட்டினம் மீன் சந்தை எனப் பல சந்தைகள் இருக்கின்றன.

Each town became famous for a particular market: Manapparai for cattle, Ayyalur for goats, Oddanchatram for vegetables, Thovalai for flowers, Erode for turmeric, Nagapattinam for fish, with many specialised markets across Tamil Nadu.

சந்தையில் வாங்க வாங்க என அன்போடு வரவேற்று நலம் விசாரித்தபின்தான் வியாபாரம் நடக்கும். குழந்தை ஏதேனும் எடுத்தால் அதற்குக் காசு இல்லை; குழந்தையின் ஆசையில் வணிகம் குறுக்கிடாது.

Though a market is noisy it is not mere lip-trade; like a wedding house, business happens only after a warm welcome and asking after one's wellbeing. In the country market, whatever a child picks up, be it a tomato or carrot, is free; trade does not stand in the way of a child's wish.

மூவரும் மால் சென்று பார்க்கிறார்கள். அங்கே பொம்மையைத் தொடக் கூடாது, பெரிய முதலீடு வேண்டும், தற்காலிகப் பணியாளர் அதிகம். அந்தக் காலச் சந்தையில் பணத்தைவிட மனித மாண்புகளுக்கே முக்கியத்துவம் என்பதை மூர்த்தி உணர்கிறான்.

The three visit the mall. In the modern complex the producer, wholesaler and retailer are different people; goods may not be touched; large investment is needed; permanent staff are few and temporary workers many. In the end Murthi realises and admires that in the markets of old, people valued human dignity more than money.
