இராவண காவியம் Ravana Kaaviyam

அருவிகள் பறை போல் ஒலிக்கின்றன. பசுங்கிளி தான் அறிந்த தமிழிசையைப் பாடுகிறது. பொன் போன்ற அழகிய மயில் தன் அருமையான சிறகை விரித்து ஆடுகிறது. இந்தக் காட்சியைப் பூக்கள் நிறைந்த மரக்கிளைகளில் இருக்கும் குரங்குக் கூட்டம் வியப்போடு பார்க்கிறது.

Waterfalls sound like the kurinji drum; the green parrot sings the Tamil tune it has learnt; the golden peacock spreads its rare plumage and dances; and the troop of monkeys perched on flowering branches watches this scene in wonder.

தீயில் இட்ட சந்தனக் குச்சிகள், அகில் ஆகியவற்றின் நறுமணம், மலை நெல்லரிசிச் சோற்றின் மணம், காந்தள் மலரின் மணம் ஆகியவை எங்கும் கலந்து பரவியதால், அக்குன்றில் உள்ள எல்லாப் பொருள்களும் நறுமணம் வீசின.

The fragrance of sandalwood and aloe-wood placed on the fire, the scent of rice cooked from hill paddy, and the perfume of the glory-lily mingled everywhere, so that every single thing on that hill gave off a sweet smell.

நாகணவாய்ப் பறவைகளும் குயில்களும் அழகிய வண்டுகளும் இசையோடு பாடின. புகழ்பெற்ற முல்லை நில ஆயர் முக்கனியையும் தேனையும் சேகரித்துக் கொண்டு, முக்குழல் இசையால் மேயும் பசுக் கூட்டங்களை ஒன்று சேர்த்தனர்.

Mynas, cuckoos and lovely bees sing in tune. The renowned cowherds of the forest land gather the three fruits and honey, and with the music of the triple-flute draw together the grazing herds of cattle.

முதிரை, சாமை, கேழ்வரகு, குதிரைவாலி நெல் போன்ற தானியங்களை முல்லை நில மக்கள் அறுத்து, களத்தில் குன்று போல் குவித்துக் கதிரடிப்பர். கதிரடிக்கும் அதிர்வொலியைக் கேட்டு மான்கள் அஞ்சி ஓடும்.

The forest-land folk harvest pulses, little millet, finger millet and horse-gram paddy, heap them like a hill on the threshing floor and thresh them; hearing the booming sound of threshing, the deer flee in fear.

கொடிய பாலை நிலத்து வெயிலின் வெப்பத்தைத் தாங்க இயலாமல் செந்நாய்க்குட்டியின் வாய் உலர்ந்து குழறியது. அதைக் கண்டு தாய்நாய் வருந்தியது. குட்டி இளைப்பாற எங்கும் நிழல் இல்லாததால், தாய் தான் வெயிலில் நின்று துன்புற்று, தன் நிழலில் குட்டியை இளைப்பாறச் செய்தது.

Unable to bear the heat of the harsh wasteland sun, the red-dog pup's mouth went dry and faltered. Seeing this, the mother grieved. As there was no shade anywhere for the pup to rest, the mother herself stood suffering in the sun and let the pup rest in her own shadow.

நறுமணம் வீசும் மராமலர்களை மாலையாக அணிந்த அழகிய சிறுவர்கள், எருதின் கொம்பு போன்ற பாலைக்காயை நிலத்தில் விழுந்து வெடிக்குமாறு கோலினால் அடித்து விளையாடினர். அவ்வோசையைக் கேட்ட பருந்துகள் அச்சத்துடன் பறந்தோடின.

Lovely children wearing garlands of fragrant maramaram flowers struck with sticks the paalai fruit, shaped like a bull's horn, to make it fall and burst on the ground in play. Hearing that sound, the kites flew off in fright.

மலையிடையே தோன்றும் ஆறும், கரையை மோதித் ததும்பும் குளத்து நீரும், முல்லை நிலத்தின் அழகிய காட்டாறும் மருத நிலத்தில் பாய்ந்தோடும். நெற்பயிரைக் காக்கும் வகையில் கரும்பு வளர்ந்து நிற்கும்; பெருகி வரும் நீரைக் கால்வாய் வழியே வயலில் தேக்கி வளம் பெருக்கும். அத்தகு வளமான மருத நில வயலில் காஞ்சி, வஞ்சி மலர்கள் பூத்து நிற்கும்.

The river born among the hills, the brimming lake water beating its banks, and the lovely forest-stream all flow into the farmland. Sugarcane grows tall as if to guard the paddy; the abundant water is held in the fields through channels, increasing the wealth of the land. In such fertile fields the kanchi and vanchi flowers bloom.

தாமரை மலர்கள் பூத்திருந்த குளத்தில் சிறுவர்கள் நீராடினர். அக்குளத்தில் நீந்தும் யானையின் தந்தங்களை அளந்து பார்த்து, அதன் வடிவழகைக் கண்டு மகிழ்ந்தனர். சிறுகழல் அணிந்த சிறார்கள் வைக்கோற்போர் குலுங்கும்படி ஏறித் தென்னை இளநீர்க் காய்களைப் பறித்து, பின்னர்க் காஞ்சி மர நிழலில் அமர்ந்து அருந்தினர்.

In a lake where lotuses bloomed, the children bathed. They measured the tusks of an elephant swimming there and delighted in its fine form. Boys wearing small anklets climbed up so the haystack swayed, plucked tender coconuts, and then sat in the shade of the kanchi tree to drink them.

பசியால் ஒருவன் வாடிக் கொண்டிருக்கும்போது வெறுமனே பார்த்திருக்கும் கீழ்மை இல்லாமல், தூய ஒழுக்க முறையைப் பற்றுபவர்கள் நெய்தல் நிலத்தவர். பசித்துயரால் துன்புறுவோரைக் கண்டு வருந்துவார்கள். தாம் வாழும் இடம் மூழ்கும்படி பெருங்கடல் அலை புகுந்தாலும், மலையளவுக்குப் பவளங்களையும் ஒளிமுத்துகளையும் கடற்கரையில் கொண்டுவந்து குவிப்பர்.

Far from the meanness of standing by while a hungry man wastes away, the people of the seashore hold to pure conduct and grieve at the sight of those suffering from hunger. Even when the great sea-waves surge in to flood their dwelling, they bring coral as high as a hill and bright pearls and heap them on the shore.

தும்பி (ஒருவகை வண்டு) கரையை நெருங்கி வருகின்ற மலை போன்ற அலையைக் கடந்து, கடற்கரை மணலில் உலவி, காற்றிலே தன் நீண்ட சிறகை உலர்த்தும். பின்னர் நல்ல பெண்களின் முகத்தைத் தாமரை மலர் எனக் கருதித் தொடர்ந்து செல்லும்; அது வானில் முழுநிலவைத் தொடர்ந்து செல்லும் கருமேகத்தின் காட்சி போல் உள்ளது.

A dragonfly crosses the mountain-like wave approaching the shore, wanders over the beach sand, and dries its long wings in the wind. Then, taking the faces of fair women to be lotus flowers, it follows them; the sight is like that of a dark cloud following the full moon across the sky.
