புறநானூறு Purananuru

வானை அளாவும் உயரமான மதில்களைக் கொண்ட பழைமையான ஊரின் தலைவனே, வளமான நாட்டின் வலிமை மிக்க மன்னனே என்று புலவர் பாண்டிய நெடுஞ்செழியனை அழைக்கிறார்.

The poet addresses the Pandiya king Nedunchezhiyan as the lord of an ancient city ringed by sky-high mighty walls, the strong ruler of a prosperous land.

நீ மறுமை இன்பத்தை அடைய விரும்பினாலோ, உலகம் முழுவதையும் வெல்ல விரும்பினாலோ, நிலையான புகழைப் பெற விரும்பினாலோ, செய்ய வேண்டியதை நான் கூறுகிறேன், கேட்பாயாக என்கிறார் புலவர்.

If you wish for the joy of the afterlife, or to win the whole world, or to gain undying fame, hear from me what must be done, says the poet.

உடல் உணவால் ஆனது; உணவு நீரால் ஆனது; எனவே உணவு என்பது நிலமும் நீரும் சேர்ந்ததே. நிலத்தையும் நீரையும் ஒன்று சேர்த்தவர் உடலையும் உயிரையும் படைத்தவரே ஆவார்.

The body is made of food, food is made of water; so food is land joined with water. Those who unite land and water are the very makers of body and life.

புல்லிய தரிசு நிலம், மழையை மட்டுமே நம்பிக் கிடக்கும் பரந்த நிலமாக இருந்தாலும், அதைச் சார்ந்து ஆளும் அரசனின் முயற்சிக்கு சிறிதும் உதவாது. எனவே என் சொல்லை இகழாமல் விரைவாகக் கடைப்பிடி.

Even a wide stretch of poor land that merely waits on rain gives no help to the king who relies on it; therefore, do not scorn my words but act on them swiftly.

நிலம் பள்ளமாகக் குழிந்த இடங்கள் தோறும் நீர்நிலைகளை உருவாக்கிப் பெருக்க வேண்டும். அவ்வாறு நிலத்துடன் நீரைச் சேர்த்தவர்கள் மூவகை இன்பத்தையும் நிலைத்த புகழையும் பெறுவர்.

In every hollow of the land water bodies must be raised; those who thus join water to land win the threefold good and lasting fame.

நீர்நிலை அமைக்காதவர் புகழ் பெறாமல் வீணே அழிவர். உயிரைக் கொடுத்தவர் என்னும் சிறந்த புகழ் நீர்நிலை அமைப்பவர்க்கே உரியது.

Those who fail to do this perish in vain without fame; the high praise of being givers of life belongs only to those who unite land and water.
