பெரியபுராணம் Periyapuranam

காவிரி மலையிலிருந்து புதிய பூக்களை அடித்துக்கொண்டு பெருகி வருகிறது. அதன் வழியெல்லாம் வண்டுகள் சூழ்ந்து ஆரவாரம் செய்கின்றன. நீர்நிலைகள் நிறைந்த சோழநாட்டுக்கு வளத்தைத் தந்தபடி அந்த ஆறு எங்கும் பரந்து ஓடுகிறது.

The Kaveri sweeps down from the hills carrying fresh blossoms; bees swarm and hum over the new honey of the flowers. Spreading everywhere, the river brings fullness to the pond-rich Chola land.

நட்ட நாற்றின் முதலிலை சுருள் விரிந்த பருவத்தில், களைபறிக்கும் காலம் வந்ததை உழவர் அறிகின்றனர். களை எடுக்கும் உழத்தியரின் கால்களில் முத்து ஈனும் சங்குகள் இடற, கூந்தலில் வண்டு மொய்க்க, அவர்கள் மென்மையாக நடந்து வரப்பை அடைகின்றனர்.

When the first leaf of the planted paddy uncurls, the farmers know it is time to weed. The weeding women, their feet brushing against pearl-bearing conches, bees about their flower-decked hair, walk gently to the field-bunds.

காடுகளில் எல்லாம் கரும்பு உள்ளது; சோலைகளின் புதிய தளிர்களில் மலர் அரும்புகள் உள்ளன. பக்கங்களில் எங்கும் கரிய குவளை மலர்கள்; வயல்களில் நெருங்கிக் கிடக்கும் சங்குகள். குளக்கரைகளில் அன்னங்கள், கடல்போல் பரந்த குளங்கள். இத்தகைய நீர்நாட்டுக்கு வேறு எந்த நாடும் ஈடாகாது.

The forests are full of sugarcane, the new shoots of the groves bear flower-buds; on every side dark blue water-lilies, in the fields close-packed conches, on the banks gentle swans, and tanks as wide as the sea. No other land can equal this land of waters.

அன்னங்கள் விளையாடும் அகலமான துறைகளில், எருமைகள் விழ்ந்து மூழ்கும். அந்நீரில் உள்ள இளமையான வாளைமீன்கள் கலக்கி எழுந்து, அருகிலுள்ள பாக்கு மரங்களின் மீது துள்ளிப் பாயும். நிலையான வானத்தில் தோன்றி மறையும் வானவில்லைப் போல அக்காட்சி விளங்கும்.

In the broad bathing-pools where swans play, buffaloes wade and sink; the young scabbard-fish, startled, leap up onto the areca palms nearby. The sight is like a rainbow that appears and vanishes in the steady sky.

அரியப்பட்ட செந்நெற்கட்டுகளை அடுக்கிப் பெரிய போராகக் குவிப்பர். மிகுதியாகப் பிடித்த பலவகை மீன்களை நீண்ட குன்றைப்போல் குவிப்பர். வளைந்த சங்குகள் ஈன்ற முத்துகளையும் குன்றைப்போல் கூட்டுவர். தேன் வடியும் விரிந்த மலர்த்தொகுதியையும் மலைபோல் குவித்து வைப்பர்.

They stack the harvested red-paddy sheaves into great heaps; the many fish they catch they pile like a long hill; the pearls borne by curved conches they gather like a mound, and the honey-dripping clusters of flowers they raise up like a mountain.

நெல்கற்றைகள் குவிந்த பெரிய போரை மேலேயிருந்து சாயச் செய்வர். பெரிய வண்டிகளைச் செலுத்தும் கருமை எருமைக்கூட்டங்கள் வலமாகச் சுற்றிச்சுற்றி மிதிக்கும். இத்தோற்றம், கரிய மேகங்கள் பெரிய பொன்மலையின் சாரல்மீது வலமாகச் சுற்றும் காட்சியைப் போல மிக்க அழகுடையது.

They make the great hill of stacked paddy sheaves lean over; herds of dark buffaloes drawing big carts tread round and round it. The scene is more beautiful than dark rain-clouds wheeling round the slope of a great golden mountain.

அந்நாட்டில் எங்கும் தென்னை, செருந்தி, நறுமணம் உள்ள நரந்தம், அரசமரம், கடம்பம், பச்சிலை மரம், பருத்த அடிப்பாகம் கொண்ட பனை, சந்தனம், குளிர்ந்த மலரையுடைய நாகம், நீண்ட இலையுடைய வஞ்சி, காஞ்சி, மலர் நிறைந்த கோங்கு முதலியன எங்கெங்கும் செழித்து வளர்ந்துள்ளன.

Throughout the land flourish coconut, serunthi, fragrant naranthu, peepul, kadamba and bay-leaf trees, the thick-trunked palmyra, sandalwood, cool-flowered naga, long-leaved vanji, kanji, and the flower-laden kongu, all growing richly everywhere.
