பட்டமரம் Pattamaram

இலைகள் இல்லாமல், வெறும் மொட்டைக் கிளைகளுடன், மூச்சு விடுவது போல் ஒரு மரம் நிற்கிறது. தினமும் வெட்டப்படும் இந்த மரமே, நீ ஏன் இப்படி வருந்தினாய்? என்று கவிஞர் கேட்கிறார்.

A tree stands with bare, leafless branches, as if barely breathing. The poet asks this tree, cut down day after day, whether it has been overcome by sorrow.

உட்கார்ந்து இளைப்பாற நிழல் தந்த, மணமுள்ள மலர்களைத் தந்த, இலைகளால் கூரை போல் விரிந்த அந்த மரம் இப்போது கருகி (கருப்பாகி) நிறம் மாறிவிட்டது. இதை எண்ணி அந்த மரம் வருந்தி வாடிவிட்டதோ?

The tree that once gave shade to rest under, fragrant flowers, and leaves spread like a roof has now withered and changed colour; pining over this, the poet asks, has it grieved and shrivelled?

கட்டை போல் காய்ந்த உடல் கடுந்துயரம் அடைந்து பட்டுக் கருகிவிட்டது. பட்டை என்னும் உடை (மரத்தோல்) கிழிந்து, மரம் தன் அழகை முற்றிலும் இழந்துவிட்டது.

Its trunk, dry like a log, has suffered deep agony and burned dead; its bark, like a garment, has torn away, and the tree has utterly lost its beauty.

காலம் என்னும் புயல் சீறி எதிர்த்து வந்தபோது, கலங்கிய ஒரு மணியைப் போல் ஓலம் இட்டு (கதறி), மரம் வருந்தி உழன்றது (போராடியது).

When the storm called Time roared against it, the tree cried out like a tolling, anguished bell, struggling and suffering.

ஒரு காலத்தில் பறவைகள் கூடி இந்த மரத்திற்காகப் பாடல் இசைத்தன; உலகிற்கு மகிழ்ச்சி தந்தன. அந்த இன்பமான நாட்கள் எல்லாம் இன்று வெறும் கனவாகிவிட்டன.

Once singing birds gathered and composed a song for the tree and gave the world joy; now all that is only an empty dream.

ஆடும் கிளைகளின் மேல் ஏறி சிறுவர்கள் குதிரை விளையாட்டு விளையாடினர். அந்த இனிய நிகழ்வுகள் எல்லாம் இப்போது சொல்லும் கதையாக மட்டுமே முடிந்துவிட்டன.

Children once climbed the swaying branches and played at riding horses; now all of it has ended as nothing more than a story told in a book.
