மணிமேகலை Manimekalai

இந்திர விழாவைக் காண உயர்வுடைய புகார் நகருக்குப் பலரும் வந்தனர். மெய்ப்பொருளையும் உலகியலையும் தத்துவத்தையும் வீடுபேற்றையும் அவரவர் தன்மைக்கு ஏற்ப விளக்கும் சமயவாதிகள் கூடினர். காலத்தைக் கணக்கிட்டுச் சொல்லும் காலக்கணிதரும் சேர்ந்தனர். தம் தேவ உடலை மறைத்து மக்கள் உருவில் வந்த கடவுளரும், பல மொழி பேசும் அயல்நாட்டு மக்களும், அரசரின் அமைச்சர் குழுவாகிய ஐம்பெருங்குழு, எண்பேராயம் ஆகியோரும் ஒன்றுசேர்ந்து திரண்டனர்.

Many came to see the Indra festival in the lofty city of Puhar. Philosophers who expounded truth, worldly life, doctrine and liberation each according to their nature gathered there. Calculators of time joined them. Gods who hid their divine forms and came in human shape, people of many tongues from foreign lands, and the king's councils (the Five Great Assemblies and the Eight Groups) all came together as one.

தோரணம் கட்டிய தெருக்களிலும் குற்றமற்ற மன்றங்களிலும் பூரண கும்பம், பொற்பாலிகை, பாவை விளக்கு போன்ற மங்கலப் பொருள்களை முறையாக வைத்து அழகுபடுத்துங்கள். குலை முற்றிய கமுகு, வாழை, வஞ்சிக்கொடி, பூங்கொடி, கரும்பு ஆகியவற்றை நட்டு வையுங்கள். தெருத் திண்ணைகளில் வரிசையாக நிற்கும் தூண்களில் முத்து மாலைகளைத் தொங்கவிடுங்கள். விழா நிறைந்த இம் மூதூரின் வீதிகளிலும் மன்றங்களிலும் பழைய மணலை மாற்றிப் புதிய மணலைப் பரப்புங்கள். துகில் கொடிகளையும் கம்பில் கட்டிய கொடிகளையும் பெரிய மாடங்களிலும் வாயில்களிலும் கட்டுங்கள்.

On streets hung with festoons and in faultless assemblies, set up full pots, golden vessels and figure-lamps in proper order. Plant ripe-bunched areca, plantain, vanji creeper, flowering vines and sugarcane. Hang pearl garlands in rows on the pillars by the street platforms. In this festival-filled ancient city, change the old sand and spread fresh sand on streets and assembly grounds. Fasten cloth banners and pole-tied flags on the great mansions and their gateways.

புண்ணியமான நல்ல உரைகளை அறிந்தவர்கள் கூடி நற்கருத்துப் பேசுங்கள். தம் சமயத்தின் உட்பொருளை அறிந்து வாதிடுவோர் பட்டிமண்டப முறைகளைத் தெரிந்து வாதிட்டுத் தீர்வு காணுங்கள். மாறுபட்ட பகைவர்களிடம் கூட கோபமும் சண்டையும் கொள்ளாமல் அவர்களை விட்டு விலகி நில்லுங்கள். வெண்மணல் குன்றுகளிலும் பூஞ்சோலைகளிலும் ஆற்றிடைக்குறைகளிலும் நிழல்தரும் துறைகளிலும் இருபத்தெட்டு நாள்களும் தேவரும் மக்களும் ஒன்றுபட்டு மகிழ்ந்து உலாவுவர் என்பதை நன்கு அறியுங்கள்.

Let those who know holy good counsel gather and speak well. Let debaters who grasp the inner meaning of their own faith ascend the debating hall knowing its rules and reach conclusions. Even toward opposing rivals, do not bear anger or quarrel; step aside from them. Know well that for twenty-eight days gods and people will mingle joyfully on the white sand hills, the spreading flower groves, the river islets and the shaded bathing ghats.

ஒளி வீசும் வாள் ஏந்திய காலாட் படையினரும், தேர்ப் படையினரும், குதிரைப் படையினரும், யானைப் படையினரும் சூழ்ந்து வர, அகன்ற முரசை அறைந்து, பசியும் நோயும் பகையும் நீங்கி மழையும் வளமும் எங்கும் பெருகுவதாகுக என்று வாழ்த்தி, விழாச் செய்தியை முரசறைவோன் அகநகர் முழுதும் அறிவித்தான்.

Foot soldiers bearing bright shining swords, chariot troops, horse troops and elephant troops surrounded him; sounding the wide drum, he blessed the city saying May hunger, disease and enmity depart, and may rain and prosperity flow everywhere. Thus the drummer announced the festival throughout the great city.
