மகனுக்கு எழுதிய கடிதம் Maganukku Ezhuthiya Kadidham

தொலைவில் உள்ளவர்களுக்குக் கருத்தைச் சொல்ல, புகை சைகையில் தொடங்கி ஒலி, அஞ்சல், இன்று மின்னஞ்சல் என வளர்ந்து வந்தோம். அப்பா தம் மகனுக்கு எழுதும் முதல் கடிதம் இது. படிக்கும் வயது மகனுக்கு இன்னும் வரவில்லை.

After noting how communication grew from smoke signals to email, the father begins his very first letter to a son too young yet to read it.

மருத்துவமனையில் மகன் பிறந்ததும் கையில் தந்தபோது, அப்பா தம் உதிரமே உருவமானது போல உணர்ந்தார். மகனின் பொக்கை வாய்ப் புன்னகை அவரை அள்ளி எடுத்தது.

He recalls the moment of birth, when the baby was placed in his hands and felt like his own blood given shape, and the toothless smile that melted him.

மகன் அழுதான், சிரித்தான், குப்புறக் கவிழ்ந்தான், தலை நிமிர்ந்தான், தவழ்ந்தான், விழுந்தான், நடந்தான். வாழ்க்கையும் இப்படித்தான்: அழவும், சிரிக்கவும், விழவும், எழவும் வேண்டும் என்று அப்பா சொல்கிறார்.

He describes each stage of the child learning to crawl, stand, fall and walk, and says life too is this drama of falling and rising again.

கல்வியில் தேர்ச்சி பெறு; அதே நேரம் அனுபவத்திடம் இருந்து கற். தீயைப் பற்றிப் படிப்பதைவிட தொட்டு உணர்வதே நிலைக்கும். உழைக்கத் தயங்காதே; உழைப்பின் பின்னால் தலைமுறைகளின் உழைப்பு உள்ளது என்கிறார்.

He urges the son to excel in study but to learn even more from experience, never to fear hard work, and reminds him that generations of toil stand behind him.

கடிதம் எழுதும்போது அப்பாவுக்குத் தம் சிறுவயது நினைவு வருகிறது. கிராமம், கோடைக்கால வெப்பம், ஓட்டுக்கூரையில் இருந்து விழும் தேள்கள், கிணற்றுத் தூர் வாரும் உற்சவம் என நினைவுகளை விவரிக்கிறார்.

Writing the letter brings back the father's own childhood in the village, the summer heat, scorpions falling from the roof, and the festive cleaning of the well, woven with his own poem.

எங்கும் அன்பாய் இரு; அன்பைவிட உயர்ந்தது எதுவுமில்லை. கிடைத்த வேலையைவிட பிடித்த வேலையைச் செய்; யாராவது கேட்டால் கடன் வாங்கியாவது உதவி செய். உறவுகளிடம் நெருங்கியும் விலகியும் இரு; நல்ல நண்பர்களைச் சேர்த்துக்கொள்.

He counsels the son to live with love, to do work he loves rather than just any work, to help others even by borrowing if needed, to balance closeness and distance with relatives, and to value true friends above all.

இவை எல்லாம் என் தகப்பன் எனக்குச் சொல்லாமல் சொன்னவை என்கிறார். மகன் வளர்ந்து தம் பேரக்குழந்தைகளுடன் இருக்கும்போது இக்கடிதத்தை மீண்டும் படிக்கச் சொல்லி, உன் கண்ணீர்த் துளியில் வாழ்ந்துகொண்டிருப்பேன் என்று அன்போடு முடிக்கிறார்.

He says all this was taught to him wordlessly by his own father, asks the son to reread the letter in his old age, and ends with the loving promise that he will live on in the son's memory.
