மதுரைக்காஞ்சி Maduraikkaanchi

மதுரை நகரைச் சுற்றி நிலத்தில் ஆழமாகத் தோண்டப்பட்ட, தெளிந்த நீர் நிறைந்த அகழி உள்ளது. அதைச் சுற்றி வானத்தை முட்டுவது போல் உயர்ந்த, பல படைகளால் காக்கப்படும் கல்மதில் எழுந்து நிற்கிறது.

Around Madurai lies a deep moat dug into the earth and filled with clear water; ringing it stands a stone rampart rising as if to touch the sky, guarded by many forces.

பழமையானதும் வலிமை மிக்கதும் தெய்வத்தன்மை பொருந்தியதுமான பெரிய வாயில் உள்ளது. நெய் பூசப்பட்டதால் கறுத்துப்போன, வலிமையான திண்மையான கதவுகள் அதற்கு உண்டு.

There is an ancient, mighty, sacred gateway, fitted with stout doors blackened by the oil rubbed upon them.

மேகங்கள் உலவும் மலையைப் போல் உயர்ந்த மாடங்கள் (மாளிகைகள்) உள்ளன. வற்றாது ஓடும் வையை ஆற்றைப் போல் மக்கள் இடைவிடாமல் செல்லும் வாயில்கள் உள்ளன.

Mansions rise like mountains over which clouds drift; the gateways teem with people moving ceaselessly, like the never-drying Vaigai river.

வானளவு உயர்ந்து, இடைவிடாமல் தென்றல் காற்று வீசும், பல சாளரங்களையுடைய நல்ல வீடுகள் உள்ளன. அந்த வீடுகள் வகைவகையாக எழுந்து, வானத்தைத் தொடுவது போல் காட்சியளிக்கின்றன.

Fine houses rise in tiers as if to reach the sky, full of many windows through which a gentle breeze constantly blows and murmurs.

ஆற்றைப் போல் அகன்ற நீண்ட தெருவில், பல்வேறு மொழி பேசுவோர் எழுப்பும் பேச்சொலி கேட்கிறது. அந்தப் பேச்சொலி, பெருங்காற்று புகுந்த கடலின் ஒலி போல் பெருகி ஒலிக்கிறது.

On streets broad as a river, the speech of many crowds speaking different tongues rises and resounds like the roar of the sea stirred by a great wind.

விழா பற்றி அறிவிக்கும் முரசு முழங்குகிறது. நீர்நிலையைக் கையால் குடைந்து விளையாடுவது போல் இசைக்கருவிகளின் இனிய ஒலி எழுகிறது. அதைக் கேட்ட மக்கள் தெருவில் ஆரவாரத்தோடு ஆடுகின்றனர்.

Drums boom to announce the festival; instruments give out sweet music as if hands were scooping at a pool of water, and those who hear it dance in the streets with joyful uproar.

பெரிய தெருக்களில் இருக்கும் இரண்டு பெரிய அங்காடிகளும் (நாளங்காடியும் அல்லங்காடியும்) ஓவியங்கள் போல் அழகாகக் காட்சியளிக்கின்றன.

The two great markets along the wide streets, the day market and the night market, present a sight as lovely as a painting.
