புயலிலே ஒரு தோணி Puyalile Oru Thoni

சுட்டெரித்துக்கொண்டிருந்த வெயில் ஓர் இமைநேரத்தில் மறைந்தது; வானம் புழுங்கியது. பாண்டியன் அண்ணாந்து பார்த்தான். மேகங்கள் ஒன்றாகத் திரண்டு கும்மிருட்டாய் இறுகி நின்றன.

The scorching sun vanished in the blink of an eye and the sky grew stifling. Pandian got up and looked straight up: masses of cloud spread and gathered into a dense darkness, and the waves rolled smooth as if oiled.

காற்றையே காணோம், ஒரே இறுக்கம். கிடுகிடுக்கும் இடியோடு மின்னல் வானைப் பிளந்தது. மாலுமிகள் பாய்மரத்தை நோக்கி ஓடிக் கயிறுகளை இறுக்கினர். எல்லோரும் மிரண்டு விழித்தனர்.

The wind itself could not be seen, only a tight stillness. The sailors who had been talking with the captain suddenly ran to the mast and tightened the ropes. With a rattling thunderclap, lightning split the sky, and everyone stared at one another in terror.

வானம் உடைந்து வெள்ளம் கொட்டியது. சூறாவளியும் மழையும் காற்றும் கலந்து ஆடின. அலையோட்டம் தெரியவில்லை, வானுடன் கடல் கலந்துவிட்டது; மழை காற்றுடன் இணைந்துவிட்டது.

The sky broke and rain poured down in torrents. Cyclone, rain and wind mixed together and danced and leapt and roared. The rolling of the waves could not be made out, sea had merged with sky, and rain could not be told apart from wind.

தோணி அப்படியும் இப்படியும் தாவிக் குதித்து விழுந்து தத்தளித்தது. எலும்புகள் முறிவது போல நொறுநொறு ஒலி. தலைக்கு மேலும் கடல், சுற்றிலும் இருட்டிருட்டு. பாண்டியன் வடக்கயிற்றைப் பற்றிக் கிடந்தான்.

The ship leapt this way and that, fell and floundered; there came a crunching sound as if bones were breaking. The sea was above their heads, and darkness lay all around. Pandian clung with his right hand to a hanging rope. Where, oh where were the others?

திடீரென அமைதி வந்து மிரட்டியது; வானும் கடலும் பிரிந்து தனித்துத் தெரிந்தன. பின் மீண்டும் வானும் கடலும் காற்றும் மழையும் ஒன்றுகூடிக் கொந்தளித்தன; தோணி வெறிக் கூத்தாடித் தாவித் தாவிக் குதித்து நொறுங்கியது.

A sudden silence rushed in and threatened them; sky and sea separated and showed themselves apart. Then sky, sea, wind and rain gathered once more and raged; the sky split and spat fire, the wind butted and overturned. The ship danced like a madman, trembled, leapt and leapt and was smashed to pieces.

திடீரென சூரிய வெளிச்சம்! புயல் ஓய்ந்தது. பாய்மரம் ஓடிந்து கிடந்தது, தோணியில் நீர் நிரம்பியிருந்தது. மாலுமிகள் நீரை இறைத்து ஊற்றி, ஓட்டையை அடைத்தனர். கடற்கூத்து எவ்வளவு நேரம் நீடித்ததென்று கணக்கிட முடியவில்லை.

What is this! Sunlight! The storm had passed. The mast lay broken and water swayed inside the ship. The sailors bailed out the seawater and poured it away, plugged the leak and drove in wedges. No one could reckon how long the sea-dance had lasted, for all the clocks had stopped.

இனிமேல் பயமில்லை, இரண்டு நாளில் கரையைப் பார்க்கலாம் என்று கப்பித்தான் சொன்னான். அன்றிரவு யாரும் உண்ணவில்லை, பேசவில்லை. மறுநாள் சூரியன் உதித்தான்; பறவைகளும் மீன்களும் கூட்டமாக விளையாடின, தோணி பினாங்கை நோக்கி அமைதியாகச் சென்றது.

"There is no danger from now on; in two days we can see the shore," said the captain in a tongue that mixed Chinese and Malay. That night no one ate or spoke. Next morning the sun rose; the waves came one after another and struck the ship, and flying fish and avuliya fish leapt and swam in shoals. Carried by the pull of the sea, the ship moved on toward Penang.
