புதிய நம்பிக்கை Puthiya Nambikkai

மேரி ஒரு கறுப்பின ஏழைக் குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்தவள். அவள் குடும்பம் காலையில் எழுந்து மாலை வரை பருத்திக் காட்டில் கடினமாக உழைக்கும். மாலையில் எல்லோரும் ஒன்றாகச் சேர்ந்து பாடுவதும் பிரார்த்தனை செய்வதும் மேரிக்கு மிகவும் பிடிக்கும்.

Mary's poor family woke at five and worked all day in the cotton fields. The evening, when everyone sang and prayed together, was the time Mary loved most.

ஒருநாள் மேரி தன் அம்மா பாட்ஸியுடன் வெள்ளை முதலாளி வில்ஸனின் வீட்டிற்குச் சென்றாள். அங்கே ஒரு வெள்ளைச் சிறுமி மேரியை விளையாட அழைத்தாள். மேரி உள்ளே சென்று அழகான விளையாட்டுப் பொருட்களைப் பார்த்தாள்.

Mary went with her mother Patsy to the white master Wilson's house. A white girl there invited her in to play, and Mary looked in wonder at the beautiful toys.

மேசை மீது இருந்த ஒரு புத்தகத்தை மேரி கையில் எடுத்தாள். அந்தச் சிறுமி கோபமாக அதைப் பறித்து, கறுப்பினர்களால் படிக்க முடியாது என்று சொன்னாள். மனம் வருந்திய மேரி கண்ணீருடன் வெளியேறினாள்.

When Mary picked up a book on the table, the white girl snatched it away and scoffed that books were not for those who could not read. Hurt, Mary left in tears.

அந்த அவமானம் மேரியின் மனதில் ஒரு புதிய உறுதியை உருவாக்கியது. நான் கட்டாயம் படிக்கக் கற்றுக்கொள்வேன் என்று அவள் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் தனக்குத்தானே சொல்லிக்கொண்டாள். ஆனால் அந்த ஊரில் கறுப்பினக் குழந்தைகளுக்குப் பள்ளியே இல்லை.

That insult kindled in Mary an unquenchable will to learn. She kept repeating to herself that she would learn to read. But there was no school for black children in her town.

ஒருநாள் அறிமுகமில்லாத ஒரு பெண் வந்து, உன் போன்ற குழந்தைகளுக்காகவே மேயெஸ்வில்லியில் பள்ளி உள்ளது என்று கூறினாள். மேரியின் தந்தை சாம் அவளுக்கு ஒரு சிலேட்டும் சாக்பீஸும் வாங்கிக் கொடுத்தார். மேரி ஐந்து மைல் தூரம் நடந்தே பள்ளிக்குச் சென்று படிக்கத் தொடங்கினாள்.

An unknown woman came and told Mary that a school for children like her had opened in Mayesville. Her father Sam bought her a slate and chalk, and she walked five miles each way to learn.

மேரி பள்ளியில் கற்றதைத் தன் சகோதரர்களுக்கும் சகோதரிகளுக்கும் சொல்லிக் கொடுத்தாள். கறுப்பின மக்கள் கணக்கு, சம்பளம் சம்பந்தமான உதவிக்கு மேரியிடம் வரத் தொடங்கினர். கல்வியால் அவள் ஊருக்கு முக்கியமான ஒருவராக மாறினாள்.

Mary taught what she had learnt to her brothers and sisters. Neighbours began coming to her for help with accounts and wages. Through education she was becoming an important person.

மிஸ் வில்சன் வந்து, ஒரு வெள்ளைக்காரப் பெண்மணி மேரியின் படிப்புக்காகப் பணம் அனுப்பியதாகவும், மேரி மேற்படிப்புக்காக டவுனுக்குச் செல்ல வேண்டும் என்றும் சொன்னார். ஊர் மக்கள் அனைவரும் கூடி வாழ்த்தி ரயிலில் அவளை அனுப்பி வைத்தனர். படிக்க முடியாது என்று இகழப்பட்ட சிறுமி, பலருக்குக் கல்விச் சுடர் ஏற்றும் பெரிய கல்வியாளராக உயர்ந்தாள்.

A white lady sent money for Mary's higher studies. The whole town gathered at the station to bless and send her off. The girl once scorned as unable to read rose to become a great educator and a voice for oppressed communities.
