ஒருவன் இருக்கிறான் Oruvan Irukkiran

கதைசொல்லியின் பக்கத்து வீட்டுக்காரர் தங்கவேலு. ஒருநாள் வயிற்றுவலியால் வாடிய ஒரு இளைஞன் தங்கவேலு வீட்டு திண்ணையில் வந்து உட்காருகிறான். அவன் வயது இருபத்தைந்து, மெலிந்த உடல், அழுக்கு உடை.

A sickly young man of about twenty-five, thin and shabbily dressed and suffering from stomach pain, comes and sits on the front platform (thinnai) of Thangavelu's house, next door to the narrator.

அவன் தங்கவேலுவின் மனைவிக்கு அக்காள் மகன் என்று சொல்கிறான். உண்மையில் தாய் தந்தை இல்லாத அநாதை. காஞ்சிபுரத்தில் தாய்மாமன் வீட்டில் இருந்தவன்; நோய் வந்ததால் அங்கிருந்து விரட்டப்பட்டு, சித்தியை நம்பி வைத்தியம் பார்க்க சென்னைக்கு வந்தான்.

He says he is the son of Thangavelu's wife's elder sister, though he is really an orphan with no parents. He had lived doing small work at his maternal uncle's house in Kanchipuram, but when illness and joblessness came he was driven out, and came to Chennai trusting his aunt, to get treatment.

தங்கவேலுவும் அவன் மனைவியும் அவன் வந்ததை விரும்பவில்லை. கதைசொல்லிக்கும் அவன் வந்ததால் கவலையும் தொல்லையும். எல்லோரும் அவன் விரைவில் போய்விட வேண்டும் என்று எண்ணுகிறார்கள்.

Neither Thangavelu nor his wife wants him there, and they are in a hurry to send him away. The narrator too feels only worry and irritation at his nightly groans. Everyone wishes him gone.

தங்கவேலு அவனை அரசு ஆஸ்பத்திரியில் சேர்க்க அழைத்துப் போகிறார். அதைக் கேட்டு கதைசொல்லிக்கு மிகுந்த மகிழ்ச்சி. போகும்போது அவன் வணங்கி விடைபெறுகிறான்; கதைசொல்லி மனதுக்குள் அவனை நஞ்சாக வெறுத்துக்கொண்டே, வெளியே 'சீக்கிரம் குணமாகட்டும்' என்று பொய்யாக வாழ்த்துகிறார்.

On the sixth day Thangavelu takes him to admit him at the government hospital, and the narrator's joy and relief are boundless. As he leaves, the young man bows and asks for blessing; the narrator, inwardly cursing him as a hateful burden, falsely blesses him to recover soon and go.

சில நாள் கழித்து காஞ்சிபுரத்திலிருந்து ஒருவன் 'குப்புசாமி இருக்கிறாரா?' என்று தேடி வருகிறான். குப்புசாமி என்பது அந்த நோயாளி இளைஞனின் பெயர். வந்தவன் வீரப்பன், குப்புசாமியின் உயிர் நண்பன்.

A few days later a man comes from Kanchipuram asking, 'Is Kuppusami here?' Kuppusami is the real name of the sick young man. The visitor is Veerappan, a poor coolie at a firewood shop, but Kuppusami's dearest friend.

வீரப்பன் குப்புசாமிக்காக மூன்று ரூபாயும் ஒரு கடிதமும் இரண்டு சாத்துக்குடிப் பழங்களும் கொடுக்கிறான். தன் சொந்தப் பணமாக இன்னும் ஒரு ரூபாயும் சேர்க்கிறான். கடிதத்தில் தினமும் கோவிலில் குப்புசாமி குணமாக வேண்டுமென வேண்டுவதாகவும், அவனைப் பார்த்தால்தான் சோறு சோறாக இருக்குமென்றும் எழுதியிருந்தான்.

Veerappan hands over three rupees, a letter, and two sweet-lime fruits for Kuppusami, and even adds a rupee of his own. The letter, written though he himself was jobless and had borrowed the money, says he prays daily at the temple for Kuppusami's recovery, and that the rice he eats tastes like rice only when he can see his friend.

கடிதத்தைப் படித்த கதைசொல்லி வெட்கப்பட்டு, குளியல் அறையில் போய் அழுகிறார். உலகமே ஒதுக்கிய குப்புசாமிக்கும் உயிரைக் கொடுக்கும் ஒரு நண்பன் இருக்கிறான் என்று உணர்கிறார். 'குப்புசாமிக்கும் ஒருவன் இருக்கிறான்; எனக்கும் ஒருவன் இருக்கிறான்' என்று நினைத்து குப்புசாமிக்குப் பழம் வாங்கச் செல்கிறார்.

Reading the letter, the narrator can no longer sit still; he goes into the bathroom and weeps real tears. He marvels that even Kuppusami, rejected by the whole world, has in Veerappan someone who treasures his very life. Realising 'Kuppusami too has someone, and so do I,' he goes to the market to buy fruit for Kuppusami.
