கோபல்லபுரத்து மக்கள் Kopallapurathu Makkal

அதிகாலையில் கிராமத்து மக்கள் வயலில் அருகுப் புல் பிடுங்கி வேலை செய்து கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். வேலை முடிந்து காலைக் கஞ்சி குடிக்கப் போகும் நேரம் அது.

At dawn the villagers were pulling out arugu grass in the wet field. It was the hour when, their work done, they were about to sit down and drink the morning kanji (rice gruel).

தூரத்தில் ஒரு வாலிபன் களைப்பான ஒரு சாமியாரைக் கூட்டிக்கொண்டு வந்தான். அந்தச் சாமியார் களைப்பால் நடக்க முடியாமல் இருந்தார். சுப்பையா, யாரோ ஒரு சாமியாரை இழுத்துக்கொண்டு வருகிறானே என்று கேட்டான்.

In the distance a young man was bringing along a weary holy man (sanyasi). With his beard and dirty clothes the sanyasi looked old and could barely walk. Suppaiya asked who the young man was bringing along.

அன்னமய்யா அந்தச் சாமியாரின் முகத்தைப் பார்த்தான். பசியால் வாடிய அந்த முகமும் கண்களின் ஒளியும் அவனை ஈர்த்தன. சாமியார் தண்ணீர் கேட்டபோது, அன்னமய்யா அன்போடு உபசரித்தான்.

When Annamayya looked closely, the hunger-worn face had a striking brightness in the eyes. When the sanyasi asked in Tamil for a little water to drink, Annamayya was delighted and welcomed him warmly.

வயலருகே மண்ணில் புதைத்து வைத்த கலயங்களில் கஞ்சியும் துவையலும் ஊறுகாயும் இருந்தன. காகங்கள் கெடுக்காமல் இருக்க அவற்றை மண்ணில் புதைத்துக் கல்லால் மூடி வைத்திருந்தார்கள். அன்னமய்யா சிரட்டையில் கஞ்சியை வடித்துக் கொடுத்தான்.

Half-buried in the black soil were pots, their mouths covered with coconut-sized stones so crows could not spoil the kanji. Annamayya opened one pot and poured the clear gruel into a coconut-shell cup (siratai) and offered it to him.

சாமியார் கஞ்சியை உறிஞ்சிக் குடித்தபோது மிகவும் மகிழ்ந்தார். வேப்ப மர நிழலில் சிறிது நேரம் தூங்கினார். கொடுத்தவனுக்கும், வாங்கியவனுக்கும் ஒரே போல் மன நிறைவு ஏற்பட்டது.

Sip by sip the gruel filled him with life and a sound of pure relief escaped him. The shade of the neem tree felt like heaven and he dozed off. Both the receiver and Annamayya the giver felt a deep contentment.

அந்தச் சாமியாரின் சொந்தப் பெயர் பரமேஸ்வரன். ஆனால் இப்போது தன்னை 'மணி' என்றே அழைக்கச் சொன்னார். தான் வெகு தொலைவில் இருந்து வருவதாகச் சொன்னார். அன்னமய்யா தன் நண்பன் சுப்பையாவின் வயலுக்கு அவரை அழைத்துப் போனான்.

The sanyasi said his own name was Parameswaran, but asked to be called 'Mani' for now, promising to tell where he came from at leisure. Annamayya took him to his friend Suppaiya's field.

அங்கு மக்கள் மணியையும் அன்போடு வரவேற்று, தங்களோடு சேர்ந்து உண்ணும்படி அழைத்தார்கள். அவர்கள் இடது கையில் சோறு வைத்துச் சாப்பிட்டார்கள். மணியும் அவர்களைப் போலவே இடது கையில் வாங்கி உண்டார். அவ்வளவு கடும் பசியிலும் அவரால் அரை உருண்டைக்கு மேல் சாப்பிட முடியவில்லை.

The people warmly welcomed Annamayya and the newcomer and invited them to sit in the circle and eat. Seeing they ate the millet rice held in the left hand, Mani hesitated but then ate as they did. Even with his fierce hunger he could not eat more than half a ball of rice.
