கம்பராமாயணம் Kambaramayanam

உள்ளதை உணர்ந்து சொல்வது கவிதை. கவிஞனின் உலகத்திற்கு இட எல்லையோ கால எல்லையோ இல்லை. தன் சிந்தையில் தோன்றும் காட்சியைச் சொல்லால் எழுப்புகிறான். அப்படிப்பட்ட சிறந்த கவிஞன் கம்பன்.

Poetry is the telling of what one feels. The poet's world has no limit of place or time; he raises in words the scene that forms in his mind. Such a poet is Kambar, of whom Bharati proudly said the verses Kambar sang are his own.

மகரந்தம் சிந்தும் சோலைகள், செண்பகக் காடுகள், மலரும் பொய்கைகள், புது மணல் தடாகங்கள், கமுகந்தோட்டங்கள், நெல்வயல்கள் என எல்லாவற்றிலும் ஆறு பரவிப் பாய்கிறது. ஒரே உயிர் பல உடல்களில் ஊடுருவி உலாவுவது போல் பல இடங்களில் அது பாய்கிறது.

The river spreads and flows through pollen-shedding groves, dense shenbagam forests, lotus ponds, fresh-sand pools, areca gardens and paddy fields. Kambar shows it flowing through many places like one life moving through many bodies.

குளிர்ந்த சோலைகளில் மயில்கள் ஆட, விரிந்த தாமரை மலர்கள் ஏற்றிய விளக்குகள் போல் தோன்ற, மேகங்கள் மத்தள ஒலியாய் எழ, குவளை மலர்கள் கண் விழிப்பது போல் காண, அலைகள் திரைச்சீலையாய் விரிய, வண்டுகள் யாழின் இசை போல் பாட, மருத நிலம் ஓர் அரசவை போல் விளங்குகிறது.

Peacocks dance in cool groves, open lotus blooms look like lit lamps, gathering clouds rise like drum-beats, blue lily flowers seem to open their eyes, waves spread like stage curtains and bees hum like the sweet music of a yazh, so that the marutham land appears like a royal court in session.

கோசல நாட்டில் வறுமை சிறிதும் இல்லாததால் கொடைக்கு இடமில்லை. போர் புரிபவர் இல்லாததால் உடல் வலிமை காட்ட வாய்ப்பில்லை. பொய் இல்லாமையால் மெய்மை தனித்து விளங்க இல்லை. பல வகைக் கேள்விச் செல்வம் மிகுந்ததால் அறியாமை சிறிதும் இல்லை.

In the Kosala country there is no poverty, so there is no occasion for charity; no one to wage open war, so no chance to show bodily strength; no falsehood, so truth does not stand out by contrast; great wealth of learning, so there is no ignorance at all.

பகலவன் ஒளி இராமனின் நீலமேனி ஒளியில் பட்டு மறைந்துவிட, நுண்ணிய இடையுடைய சீதையோடும், இளையவன் இலக்குவனோடும் இராமன் சென்றான். அவன் நிறம் மையோ, மரகதமோ, நீலக் கடலோ, கார்மேகமோ என்று கம்பன் வியந்து, 'ஐயோ' என்று அழியா அழகை வருணிக்கிறான்.

The sun's light fades within the glow of Rama's blue-dark body as he goes with slender-waisted Sita and his younger brother Lakshmana. Is his hue collyrium, green emerald, the surging blue sea, or a rain cloud? Unable to settle it, Kambar wonders 'aiyo' and declares Rama's beauty matchless and undying.

ஆழமும் பெரிய அலைகளும் உடைய கங்கை ஆற்றைப் பரதன் முதலானோர் கடந்து செல்வார்களா? யானைப்படை கண்டு புறமுதுகு காட்டி விலகும் வில்வீரன் நானா? இராமர் 'தோழமை' என்று சொன்ன சொல் ஒப்பற்றது. அந்தத் தோழமையை எண்ணாமல் இவர்களைக் கடந்து போக விட்டால், இந்த அற்ப வேடன் இறந்திருக்கலாமே என்று உலகம் என்னைப் பழிக்கும் என்று குகன் எண்ணுகிறான்.

Will Bharata and the others cross the deep, high-waved Ganga? Am I a bowman who turns his back and flees on seeing an elephant army? The word 'friendship' that Rama spoke is matchless. If, forgetting that friendship, I let them cross, Guhan reflects that the world will blame him, saying this lowly hunter might as well have died.

உலக்கையால் மாறிமாறி இடிக்கும் ஒத்த ஓசை போன்ற சந்தத்தில் அமைந்த பாடல் இது. உறங்குகின்ற கும்பகருணனே, உன் பொய்யான வாழ்வு இன்றிலிருந்து இறங்கத் தொடங்கிவிட்டது; அதைக் காண எழுந்திராய், எழுந்திராய்! காலனுக்குத் தூதரானவர் கையில் இனிப் படுத்து உறங்குவாயாக என்று அவனை எழுப்புகிறார்கள்.

This verse has a rhythm like a pestle pounding by turns in steady beats. Sleeping Kumbakarunan, your false life has begun to decline from this very day; rise to see it, rise! In the hand of the bow-bearing god of death's messenger you shall now lie and sleep, they say as they wake him.
