ஜெயகாந்தன் கருத்தாழமும் வாசிக்கும் சுவையும் கலந்து இலக்கியம் படைத்தவர். சிறுகதை, புதினம், திரைப்படம், முன்னுரை, பேட்டி என எதைச் செய்தாலும் தனிமுத்திரை பதித்தவர்.

Jayakanthan wrote literature blending depth of thought with readerly pleasure, leaving his stamp on the short story, the novel, cinema, prefaces and interviews; a writer steeped in humanity who won the great literary prizes.

தான் எழுதுவதற்கு ஒரு தூண்டுதலும் காரணமும் உண்டு என்கிறார். தான் எழுதுவது வாழ்க்கையிலிருந்து பெற்ற கல்வியின் விளைவும் தனிமுயற்சியின் பயனும் என்கிறார்.

He says there is a prompting and a reason behind his writing, born of the schooling life gives and his own effort; he writes as the loving husband of the goddess of art and the loving son of mother society, without lowering artistic worth.

அர்த்தமே வடிவத்தை வளமாக்குகிறது; வெறும் வடிவம் உயிரற்ற பொம்மை போன்றது. கலைப்பணி என்றாலே அதனுள் சமூகப் பார்வை அடங்கியிருக்கிறது என்கிறார்.

Meaning is what enriches form; bare form is a lifeless doll. Art already contains a social vision within it, and he writes to do the work of art with that social gaze.

கதைசொல்லி 'தோல்வி நிச்சயம்' என்ற மனநிலையோடு பக்கத்து நகரம் சென்றார். அன்று அந்த மனநிலையே தோற்றது. அதைக் கொண்டாட எண்ணி ஓர் அணா இரண்டணா செலவில் காப்பி அருந்தினார்.

The narrator goes to a nearby town expecting to fail, but that very expectation of failure fails; to celebrate, he drinks a cup of coffee and then wonders how to spend the small change left in his hand.

நிலையத்தில் பார்வையற்ற முதிய பிச்சைக்காரன் ஒருவன் இருந்தான். கதைசொல்லி அவன் பாத்திரத்தில் இரண்டணா போட்டார்; அவன் வாழ்த்தினான். ஆனால் ஊர் செல்ல முக்கால் ரூபாய் வேண்டியிருந்தது.

At the station sits a blind old beggar; the narrator drops a two-anna coin in his bowl and is blessed, but needing three-quarters of a rupee for his journey, he begins to argue within himself whether to take the coin back.

அவன் கொடுத்துவிட்டான், வாழ்த்திவிட்டான்; அது இனி தன்னுடையதல்ல என்று ஒரு மனம் சொல்கிறது. பொருளாதார ரீதியாய் இன்னொரு மனம் தர்க்கம் செய்கிறது. கதைசொல்லி இரண்டணாவை எடுத்து ஓரணா போடுகிறார்.

One mind says the coin is no longer his since the man gave it and blessed him; another argues economically. He takes the two annas and drops one, but the blind man feels the bowl and curses him for cheating a blind man.

வெட்கத்தால் கதைசொல்லி மூன்றணா தர்மம் போட்டு வெகுநேரம் நின்றார். அவர் போக இருந்த ரயில் வந்து போய்விட்டது. பின்னர் அது ஒரு கோர ரயில் விபத்தில் சிக்கிய ரயில் என்று தெரிந்தது.

Ashamed, the narrator gives three annas and lingers, missing his train; that very train meets a terrible accident. Whether charity saved him is beyond argument, the story concludes.
