सूर के पद Sur Ke Pad

इस पद में माँ यशोदा छोटे कृष्ण को पालने में झुला रही हैं। वे कभी झुलाती हैं, कभी प्यार से पुचकारती हैं और जो भी मन में आए वही लोरी गाती रहती हैं। वे नींद को बुलाती हैं: 'हे नींद, तू जल्दी क्यों नहीं आती? मेरे प्यारे को कान्ह बुला रहा है, आकर इसे सुला दे।' कृष्ण कभी आँखें बंद कर लेते हैं तो कभी होंठ हिलाते हैं। यह देखकर यशोदा समझती हैं कि वे सो गए हैं, इसलिए चुप हो जाती हैं और इशारे से सबको शांत रहने को कहती हैं। तभी कृष्ण अचानक जाग कर रोने-मचलने लगते हैं, तो यशोदा फिर मीठी आवाज़ में गाने लगती हैं। सूरदास कहते हैं कि जो सुख देवताओं और साधु-मुनियों को भी मुश्किल से मिलता है, वही माँ के प्यार का सुख यशोदा को आसानी से मिल जाता है।

Here mother Yashoda rocks baby Krishna in his cradle. She swings him, fondles and pampers him, and sings whatever lullaby comes to her. She calls upon Sleep: 'O dear Sleep, why do you not come quickly? My darling, Kanha, is calling you, come and put him to sleep.' Krishna sometimes shuts his eyes, sometimes quivers his lips. Thinking he has fallen asleep, Yashoda falls silent and signals everyone to keep quiet. Just then Krishna suddenly wakes up restless, and Yashoda again begins to sing sweetly. Surdas says that the joy of vatsalya which is rare even for gods and sages is effortlessly attained by Yashoda, the wife of Nanda.

इस पद में छोटे कृष्ण का बहुत प्यारा रूप दिखाया गया है। कृष्ण माखन खाते-खाते चिढ़ रहे हैं; रूठने से उनकी आँखें लाल हो गई हैं, भौंहें टेढ़ी हैं और वे बार-बार जँभाई ले रहे हैं। कभी वे घुटनों के बल चलते हैं और उनका शरीर धूल लगने से मैला हो जाता है। कभी झुक कर अपने बालों की लट खींचते हैं तो आँखों में पानी भर आता है। कभी तोतली बोली बोलते हैं तो कभी 'तात' यानी पिता कह कर बुलाते हैं। सूरदास कहते हैं कि कृष्ण की यह प्यारी बचपन की छवि देखकर माँ यशोदा एक पल के लिए भी उनसे नज़र नहीं हटातीं।

This pad shows the utterly charming form of the child Krishna. While eating butter he grows fretful; from sulking his eyes have turned red, his eyebrows are arched, and he yawns again and again. Sometimes he crawls about on his knees with a tinkling sound, his little body grey with dust. Sometimes he bends and tugs at his curls so that his eyes fill with tears. Sometimes he speaks in lisping baby-talk, sometimes he calls out 'taat' (father). Surdas says that seeing this childhood beauty of Krishna, mother Yashoda cannot take her eyes off him even for a moment.

इस पद में छोटे कृष्ण माँ यशोदा से बच्चों जैसी जिद करते हैं। वे कहते हैं: 'मैया, मैं तो चाँद का खिलौना ही लूँगा। अगर अभी न मिला तो मैं अभी ज़मीन पर लोट जाऊँगा और तेरी गोद में नहीं आऊँगा। न तो गाय का दूध पिऊँगा, न सिर पर चोटी गुथवाऊँगा। मैं नंद बाबा का बेटा बन जाऊँगा, तुझे माँ ही नहीं कहूँगा। और सुन, मैं यह बात बलराम को भी नहीं बताऊँगा।' यह सुनकर यशोदा हँसकर समझाती हैं और बहलाने के लिए कहती हैं कि 'मैं तेरे लिए नई दुल्हन ले आऊँगी।' तब कृष्ण फिर बच्चों जैसे कहते हैं: 'तेरी कसम मैया, मेरी बात सुन, मैं तो अभी शादी करने ही जाऊँगा।' सूरदास कहते हैं कि कृष्ण के साथी शरारती बराती बनकर सुंदर मंगल-गीत गाएँगे। इस पद में बच्चे की भोली जिद और माँ का प्यार से बहलाना बहुत सुंदर ढंग से दिखाया गया है।

In this pad the child Krishna throws a typically childish tantrum at mother Yashoda. He says: 'Mother, I will have nothing but the moon as my toy. If I don't get it now, I will roll on the ground this very moment and will not come into your lap. I will neither drink the cow's milk nor have my hair braided. I will become the son of Nanda alone and will not even call you mother. And listen, I won't even tell Baldev (Balaram) about this.' Hearing this, Yashoda laughs and coaxes him, saying she will bring him a new bride. Then Krishna, still childlike, says: 'I swear by you, mother, listen to me, I will go and get married right now.' Surdas says the mischievous wedding party will sing lovely auspicious songs. The pad beautifully captures the innocent stubbornness of a child and a mother's loving way of pacifying him.
