सूखी डाली Sookhi Dali

यह नाटक एक बड़े संयुक्त परिवार की कहानी है, जिसके मुखिया 72 साल के दादा मूलराज हैं। वे अपने परिवार को एक बड़े बरगद के पेड़ जैसा मानते हैं, जिसमें घर का हर सदस्य एक टहनी है। उनका सबसे छोटा पोता परेश एक छोटा सरकारी अफसर है। वह लाहौर के एक इज़्ज़तदार और पढ़े-लिखे घर की लड़की बेला से शादी करके घर लाता है।

The play tells of a large joint family headed by 72-year-old Dada Mulraj, who sees his family as a great banyan tree in which every member is a branch. His youngest grandson Paresh, a deputy tahsildar, marries Bela, an educated graduate from a respected Lahore family, and brings her home.

पढ़ी-लिखी और नए ज़माने की बेला संयुक्त परिवार के तौर-तरीकों में खुद को ढाल नहीं पाती। उसे घर का पुराना ढंग और पुराना सामान पसंद नहीं आता। वह बार-बार अपने मायके की तारीफ़ करती है। बरसों से घर में काम कर रही पुरानी महरी (मिसरानी) को वह यह कहकर हटा देती है कि उसे काम का सही ढंग नहीं आता। इससे घर की औरतें, खास तौर पर परेश की बहन इन्दु, नाराज़ हो जाती हैं और बेला को घमंडी समझती हैं।

Educated, modern Bela cannot adjust to the ways of the joint family. She dislikes the household's old style and old furniture, constantly praises her parents' home, and dismisses the long-serving old maid for not doing things 'the right way'. This angers the women of the house, especially her sister-in-law Indu, who think Bela is proud and arrogant.

कर्मचंद और बाद में परेश दादा मूलराज को बताते हैं कि बेला अलग घर बसाना चाहती है, क्योंकि वह खुद को घर में बाहरी और बेइज़्ज़त महसूस करती है। दादा मूलराज बेला को छोड़कर घर के बाकी सब लोगों को बुलाते हैं और बरगद के पेड़ की मिसाल देते हैं, 'यह परिवार एक बड़ा पेड़ है; टहनियाँ छोटी हों या बड़ी, सब छाया देती हैं।' वे किसी को डाँटते नहीं, बल्कि समझाते हैं कि सब बेला की पढ़ाई और काबिलियत की इज़्ज़त करें और उसे अपना मानें।

Karamchand, and later Paresh, tell Dada Mulraj that Bela wishes to set up a separate home because she feels like an outsider and feels insulted. Dada Mulraj gathers all the family members (except Bela) and gives them the banyan-tree lesson: 'This family is a great tree; whether the branches are small or large, all of them give shade.' Instead of scolding, he urges everyone to respect Bela's education and ability and to accept her warmly.

अब घर के लोग बेला के साथ बहुत ज़्यादा रस्मी और इज़्ज़त भरा बर्ताव करने लगते हैं। वे उसके सामने हँसना-बोलना बंद कर देते हैं, उससे घर का कोई काम नहीं कराते और बहुत लिहाज़ रखते हैं। पर यह ज़रूरत से ज़्यादा दिखावे का आदर बेला को और भी अकेला कर देता है। उसे लगता है कि सब उससे दूरी बना रहे हैं और वह घर में बाहरी बनकर रह गई है। तब वह दादा से वापस मायके जाने की इजाज़त माँगती है।

Now the family treats Bela with exaggerated formality and respect: they stop laughing and chatting in front of her, stop giving her household work, and become overly deferential. But this excessive formality isolates her even more. She feels everyone is keeping a distance and that she has become an outsider in the home. She asks Dada for permission to go back to her parents' house.

जब बेला इन्दु को कपड़े धोते देखती है, तो वह खुद भी उसके साथ काम में जुट जाती है। यही वह पल है जब दोनों का दिल सहज रूप से मिलता है। जब दादा उसे काम करने से रोकते हैं, तब बेला अपने मन की गहरी बात कहती है: 'आप पेड़ से किसी डाली का टूटकर अलग होना पसंद नहीं करते, पर क्या आप यह चाहेंगे कि डाली पेड़ से जुड़ी रहकर ही सूख जाए?' यानी सिर्फ़ जुड़े रहना काफ़ी नहीं है; प्यार और अपनेपन के बिना जुड़ी हुई डाली भी सूख जाती है।

When Bela sees Indu washing clothes, she joins in the work herself, and this becomes the moment of natural, genuine connection. When Dada tries to stop her, Bela speaks her deepest feeling: 'You do not want a branch to break off and separate from the tree, but would you want a branch to wither while still attached to it?' That is, merely staying attached is not enough; even a joined branch dries up without love and belonging.

दादा मूलराज और पूरा परिवार समझ जाता है कि एकता सिर्फ़ ऊपरी आदर से नहीं, सच्चे प्यार, अपनेपन और साथ मिलकर काम करने से बनती है। बेला भी अपनी गलती समझ जाती है और खुद घर के काम-काज और परिवार की ज़िंदगी में घुल-मिल जाती है। अब उसे इज़्ज़त के साथ-साथ प्यार भी मिलता है, और परिवार की एकता बनी रहती है। जो डाली सूख रही थी, वह फिर से हरी हो जाती है।

Dada Mulraj and the family realise that unity is built not by outward respect but by genuine love, belonging and shared work. Bela too understands her mistake and merges herself into the household's chores and the family's life. She now receives affection along with respect, and the family's unity is preserved. The withering branch turns green again.
