Summary
Only electrons move; protons stay fixed. The object that gains electrons is negative, the one that loses them is positive.
Coulomb's law gives the size of the force: F = k q1 q2 / r squared. Doubling the distance makes the force four times weaker.
Field lines point out of positive and into negative charges. Closer lines mean a stronger field.
Sparks from static can ignite fuel vapour, so tankers are earthed. Lightning is a giant static discharge between cloud and ground.
Hard words & meanings
| static electricity | electric charge built up on an insulator that does not flow as a current |
| electron | a tiny negatively charged particle that can move between objects |
| friction | the rubbing of two surfaces, which can transfer electrons |
| charge | a property of matter that causes electric force; can be positive or negative |
| Coulomb's law | the rule giving the force between two charges, F = k q1 q2 / r squared |
| electric field | the region around a charge where another charge feels a force |
| field line | a line showing the direction of force on a positive charge; goes + to - |
| earthing | connecting an object to the ground so excess charge flows away safely |
