Summary
Stores include kinetic, gravitational, elastic, thermal, chemical and nuclear. Naming the store tells you where the energy is.
A falling ball loses GPE and gains exactly that much KE. The total energy stays constant.
A kettle moves energy electrically into the water's thermal store. The pathway is the 'how', the store is the 'where'.
The wasted energy is not destroyed, just dispersed to the surroundings and hard to reuse.
Hard words & meanings
| energy store | an object or system that holds energy which can later do work |
| kinetic energy | energy an object has because it is moving |
| gravitational potential energy | energy stored in an object because of its height above the ground |
| elastic potential energy | energy stored in a stretched or squashed elastic object |
| chemical energy | energy stored in the bonds between atoms in food, fuel and batteries |
| conservation of energy | the principle that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred |
| transfer pathway | the way energy moves between stores: mechanical, electrical, heating or radiation |
| dissipation | the spreading of wasted energy to the surroundings, usually as heat |
