Summary
They need no medium, so they cross the vacuum of space. Sunlight reaching Earth is proof.
Going this way, frequency rises and so does the energy each wave carries. Visible light is a thin band in the middle.
Ultraviolet sterilises and tans; gamma rays kill cancer cells and sterilise equipment.
Higher frequency means more energy per photon. We use lead shielding, sunscreen and limited exposure.
Hard words & meanings
| electromagnetic wave | a transverse wave of oscillating electric and magnetic fields that can travel through a vacuum |
| frequency | the number of wave cycles per second, measured in hertz (Hz) |
| wavelength | the distance between two consecutive crests, measured in metres |
| vacuum | a space with no matter in it, such as outer space |
| ionising radiation | radiation with enough energy to knock electrons off atoms and damage DNA |
| infrared | EM radiation just beyond red light, felt as heat |
| ultraviolet | EM radiation just beyond violet; causes tanning and can damage skin |
| spectrum | the full range of EM waves ordered by wavelength or frequency |
