Summary

Current is measured in amperes, voltage in volts. The cell gives each unit of charge energy to travel round the loop.

It rises with longer, thinner wires and with temperature. Insulators have very high resistance.

Total resistance R = R1 + R2 + ... If one part breaks, the whole circuit stops.

Adding branches lowers total resistance (1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2). Homes are wired this way so devices work independently.

Hard words & meanings

electric current (I)the rate of flow of charge, I = Q/t, measured in amperes
charge (Q)a basic property of matter, measured in coulombs
potential difference (V)energy transferred per unit charge, measured in volts; also called voltage
resistance (R)the opposition to current, measured in ohms; V = IR
series circuitcomponents in a single loop, so the same current flows through all
parallel circuitcomponents on separate branches, each across the full supply voltage
ammetera meter that measures current, connected in series
voltmetera meter that measures voltage, connected in parallel across a component
