Summary

A flat line means at rest. A steeper line means a faster speed.

For a curve, draw a tangent at the point and find its gradient for the speed there.

Sloping up = speeding up. Flat line = constant velocity. Sloping down = slowing down.

Split the shape into rectangles and triangles and add the areas.

Hard words & meanings

distancehow far an object has travelled, measured in metres
speedhow fast distance is covered, distance divided by time
velocityspeed in a stated direction
gradientthe steepness of a line, found as rise divided by run
accelerationthe rate at which velocity changes, measured in metres per second squared
tangenta straight line that just touches a curve at one point, used to find the gradient there
displacementdistance moved in a stated direction from the start point
stationarynot moving; distance stays the same over time
