Summary
A flat line means at rest. A steeper line means a faster speed.
For a curve, draw a tangent at the point and find its gradient for the speed there.
Sloping up = speeding up. Flat line = constant velocity. Sloping down = slowing down.
Split the shape into rectangles and triangles and add the areas.
Hard words & meanings
| distance | how far an object has travelled, measured in metres |
| speed | how fast distance is covered, distance divided by time |
| velocity | speed in a stated direction |
| gradient | the steepness of a line, found as rise divided by run |
| acceleration | the rate at which velocity changes, measured in metres per second squared |
| tangent | a straight line that just touches a curve at one point, used to find the gradient there |
| displacement | distance moved in a stated direction from the start point |
| stationary | not moving; distance stays the same over time |
