Summary

Cells and enzymes only work within narrow limits, so temperature, glucose, water and pH must be held near a fixed set point.

The response opposes the change, so it is called negative feedback. Once the value returns to normal, the response switches off.

The hypothalamus is the body's thermostat. Sweating and vasodilation lose heat; shivering and vasoconstriction save and make heat.

When blood is too concentrated, ADH makes the kidney reabsorb more water, giving small, concentrated urine - another negative feedback loop.

Hard words & meanings

homeostasiskeeping the internal environment stable within narrow limits despite external change
negative feedbacka control loop in which the response opposes the change and returns the variable to its set point
set pointthe normal value a variable is kept close to, such as 37°C for body temperature
receptora cell or organ that detects a change (stimulus) in the internal or external environment
effectora muscle or gland that carries out the corrective response
hypothalamusthe region of the brain that monitors blood temperature and water balance
vasodilationwidening of skin blood vessels to increase blood flow and lose more heat
ADHantidiuretic hormone; makes the kidney reabsorb more water when blood is too concentrated
