रामनिहाल एक भटका हुआ नौजवान है, जो आगे बढ़ने की बड़ी चाह रखता है पर उसका मन ठहरता नहीं। वह श्यामा नाम की एक विधवा के घर रहता है और उसके लिए काम करता है। श्यामा भली, समझदार और शांत स्वभाव की औरत है। रामनिहाल उसे अपना भला चाहने वाली और रखवाली करने वाली मानता है, और मन ही मन उससे लगाव भी रखता है।

Ramnihal is a wandering, ambitious and somewhat unsettled young man. He lives in the house of a widow named Shyama and works for her. Shyama is a kind, wise and calm-natured woman. Ramnihal sees her as his well-wisher and protector, and quietly feels affection for her too.

श्यामा के घर मोहन बाबू और उनकी पत्नी मनोरमा आते हैं। मोहन बाबू एक अमीर आदमी हैं। बातचीत में पता चलता है कि उनके मन में एक चिंता है: उन्हें शक है कि उनका रिश्तेदार बृजकिशोर उन्हें अदालत में पागल साबित कराकर उनकी जायदाद पर कब्ज़ा करना चाहता है।

Mohan Babu and his wife Manorama come to Shyama's house. Mohan Babu is a wealthy man. During the conversation it emerges that he carries a worry: he suspects that his relative Brijkishor wants to have him declared insane in court so as to seize his property.

कार्तिक पूर्णिमा के दिन रामनिहाल, मोहन बाबू और मनोरमा को काशी के दशाश्वमेध घाट पर गंगा में नाव की सैर कराता है, ताकि वे शाम का सुंदर नज़ारा देख सकें। इसी बीच मनोरमा रामनिहाल से बार-बार मिलती है और उसे चिट्ठियाँ भी लिखती है।

On the occasion of Kartik Purnima, Ramnihal takes Mohan Babu and Manorama for a boat ride on the Ganges at the Dashashwamedh Ghat in Kashi, so they can see the beautiful evening scene. During this time Manorama contacts Ramnihal again and again and even writes him letters.

मनोरमा बार-बार जो मदद माँगती है, उसे रामनिहाल गलत समझ लेता है। वह सोचने लगता है कि मनोरमा उससे प्यार करती है। यह शक उसके मन में गहरा बैठ जाता है और उसे बेचैन कर देता है। असल में मनोरमा सिर्फ बृजकिशोर की चाल से बचने के लिए मदद चाहती है, प्यार नहीं।

The help that Manorama keeps asking for is misread by Ramnihal. He begins to think that Manorama is in love with him. This suspicion sinks deep into his mind and makes him restless. In truth Manorama only wants help to escape Brijkishor's conspiracy, not love.

आखिर में रामनिहाल अपने मन का यह शक श्यामा को बता देता है। श्यामा उसे समझाती है कि मनोरमा न तो बुरे चरित्र की है और न ही वह रामनिहाल से प्यार करती है। वह तो एक दुखी और मुसीबत में फँसी औरत है, जो बृजकिशोर के धोखे से बचने के लिए सहारा ढूँढ़ रही है। यह सुनकर रामनिहाल चौंक जाता है और उसका बिना वजह का शक दूर हो जाता है।

At last Ramnihal tells this doubt of his to Shyama. Shyama explains to him that Manorama is neither of bad character nor in love with Ramnihal. She is in fact a distressed woman trapped in trouble, who is seeking support to escape Brijkishor's deceit. Hearing this, Ramnihal is stunned and his baseless doubt is dispelled.

कहानी अंत में यही सिखाती है कि बिना वजह का शक इंसान को सच से दूर कर देता है। रामनिहाल और मोहन बाबू दोनों अपने-अपने शक से दुखी होते हैं। सच्ची बातचीत और दूसरों का दर्द समझने से ही शक मिटता है और मन को शांति मिलती है।

In the end the story teaches that baseless doubt takes a person away from the truth. Both Ramnihal and Mohan Babu suffer from their own suspicions. Only through honest conversation and compassion does doubt vanish and the mind find peace.
