उपन्यास की नायिका; पढ़ाई में प्रथम श्रेणी पाने वाली, साँवली व छोटे कद की लड़की जिसे रंग-रूप और दहेज के कारण बार-बार ठुकराया जाता है। वह वकालत पढ़कर प्रसिद्ध वकील बनती है। / The heroine, a brilliant, dark-complexioned, short-statured girl rejected for marriage; she studies law and becomes a famous lawyer.

Minu

मीनू के पिता; मध्यमवर्गीय सज्जन जो बेटियों के विवाह को लेकर चिंतित रहते हैं पर मीनू को पढ़ने की अनुमति देते हैं। / Minu's father, a middle-class man worried about his daughters' marriages, but he supports Minu's wish to study.

Dayaram

ममतामयी पर परंपरावादी माँ जो बेटी के विवाह को लेकर अधिक चिंतित रहती है। / A loving but tradition-bound mother, very anxious about her daughter's marriage.

Minu's mother

मीनू की छोटी बहन; उसका विवाह दिल्ली के एक इंजीनियर (आलोक) से तय होता है। / Minu's younger sister; her marriage is fixed with an engineer (Alok) from Delhi.

Asha

मेरठ का चरित्रवान नवयुवक; पहले मीनू को पसंद करता है, पर परिवार के दबाव में रिश्ता टूट जाता है। बाद में पछताकर मीनू से क्षमा माँगता है और विवाह करता है। / A worthy young man from Meerut; he first likes Minu, but the match breaks under family pressure. Later he repents, apologises and finally marries her.

Amit

अमित के पिता; दहेज के लालच में अमित का रिश्ता धनी सरिता से तय करते हैं, बाद में अपनी भूल मानकर माफ़ी माँगते हैं। / Amit's father; greedy for dowry, he fixes Amit's match with the wealthy Sarita, but later admits his mistake and apologises.

Mayaram

सेठ धनीमल की धनी बेटी; पेंटिंग व कार चलाने में रुचि रखती है पर गृहकार्य में अनिच्छुक। पाँच लाख दहेज के कारण उससे अमित का रिश्ता तय होता है। / Wealthy daughter of Seth Dhanimal; interested in painting and driving but uninterested in housework. Amit's match is fixed with her for a five-lakh dowry.

Sarita

सरिता के धनी पिता; बड़ा दहेज देकर अपनी बेटी का विवाह करना चाहते हैं। / Sarita's rich father, willing to give a large dowry to marry off his daughter.

Seth Dhanimal

मीनू की सहेली; उसका विवाह सुरेंद्र से होता है। इसी विवाह में मीनू और अमित फिर मिलते हैं। नीलिमा ही मीनू को अमित के हादसे की खबर देती है। / Minu's friend; she marries Surendra. Minu and Amit meet again at her wedding, and she later informs Minu of Amit's accident.

Neelima

नीलिमा का पति और अमित का मित्र। / Neelima's husband and Amit's friend.

Surendra

एक दुर्घटना में विकलांग हुआ युवक; मीनू अपने विवाह का फ़िज़ूलखर्च घटाकर उसके लिए दुकान खुलवाती है, उसकी संवेदनशीलता का प्रमाण। / A young man disabled in an accident; Minu cuts her wedding expenses to set up a shop for him, proof of her compassion.

Manohar

दिल्ली का इंजीनियर जिससे आशा का विवाह तय होता है। (नाम कुछ स्रोतों में दिया गया है।) / The Delhi engineer to whom Asha is engaged. (Name as given in some sources.)

Alok

पहले मीनू का रिश्ता ठुकराती है, पर अंत में उसकी सफलता और गुणों से प्रभावित होकर उसे बहू के रूप में स्वीकार करती है। / She first rejects Minu, but in the end is impressed by her success and accepts her as a daughter-in-law.
