नया रास्ता Naya Rasta (Sarg 1–13)

यह उपन्यास 26 सर्गों में बँटा है। कक्षा 9 में पहला आधा भाग (सर्ग 1 से 13) पढ़ाया जाता है, जो कहानी की शुरुआत है, यानी परिवार, दहेज का दबाव और मीनू के फ़ैसले तक की घटनाएँ। नीचे की कहानी सही क्रम में है, पर कौन-सी घटना ठीक किस सर्ग में आती है, यह हर जगह पक्के तौर पर नहीं मिलता, इसलिए सर्ग की संख्याएँ लगभग दी गई हैं।

The novel is divided into 26 sargs (cantos). Class 9 covers the first half (Sarg 1 to 13), which is the ‘setup’ of the story: the family, the dowry pressure, and the events leading up to Minu's decision. The arcs below are in correct order, but the exact sarg number of each single event is not firmly documented everywhere, so the sarg numbers are given as approximate ranges.

कहानी मेरपुर के एक साधारण बीच के दर्जे के परिवार से शुरू होती है। मीनू दयाराम जी की बड़ी बेटी है। वह साँवले रंग की और छोटे कद की है, पर पढ़ाई में बहुत तेज़ और हर परीक्षा में फर्स्ट क्लास पाने वाली है। वह कत्थक नाच भी अच्छा करती है। घर में उसकी छोटी बहन आशा और भाई रोहित भी हैं। पिता ईमानदार पर परेशान हैं, क्योंकि उनके पास बेटियों की शादी के लिए ज़्यादा पैसा नहीं है। मीनू की सबसे अच्छी सहेली नीलिमा है, जो हमेशा उसकी हिम्मत बढ़ाती है।

The story begins in a simple middle-class family in Meerpur. Minu is the eldest daughter of Dayaram. She is dark-complexioned and short, but very bright in studies and scores first class in every exam. She is also a good Kathak dancer. At home she has a younger sister Asha and a brother Rohit. The father is honest but worried, because he does not have much money for his daughters' marriages. Minu's closest friend is Neelima, who always encourages her.

मीनू के लिए शादी के रिश्ते आते हैं, पर एक के बाद एक टूट जाते हैं। लड़के वाले आते हैं, मीनू को देखते हैं, और फिर साँवले रंग या कम दहेज का बहाना बनाकर मना कर देते हैं। कई बार तो वे सीधे मुँह पर रंग-रूप की बात कहकर परिवार को शर्मिंदा कर देते हैं। हर बार माँ-बाप का सिर झुक जाता है और मीनू को बेइज़्ज़ती सहनी पड़ती है। यहीं उपन्यास दिखाता है कि दहेज और रंग को लेकर समाज बेटियों के साथ कितनी नाइंसाफ़ी करता है।

Marriage proposals come for Minu, but they break one after another. The boy's side comes, looks at Minu, and then refuses on the excuse of her dark complexion or the small dowry. Sometimes they openly comment on her looks and shame the family. Each time the parents are made to feel small and Minu has to bear the insult. Here the novel shows how cruelly society treats daughters over dowry and skin colour.

फिर मेरठ से एक अच्छा रिश्ता आता है, मायाराम जी के बेटे अमित का। अमित पढ़ा-लिखा और भले स्वभाव का नौजवान है और मीनू को पसंद कर लेता है। थोड़ी देर के लिए लगता है कि अब बात पक्की हो जाएगी और मीनू के घर में खुशी आती है। परिवार को उम्मीद बँधती है कि इस बार रिश्ता नहीं टूटेगा।

Then a good proposal comes from Meerut, for Amit, the son of Mayaram. Amit is an educated, kind-natured young man and he likes Minu. For a while it seems the match will be settled and there is happiness in Minu's home. The family begins to hope that this time the match will not break.

तभी सेठ धनीमल अपनी बेटी सरिता के लिए मायाराम के घर बड़े दहेज का रिश्ता भेजते हैं। पैसे का लालच आ जाता है और अमित के घरवाले उस पर दबाव डालते हैं कि वह मीनू को छोड़कर अमीर सेठ की बेटी से शादी करे। अमित मन से मीनू को चाहता है, पर माँ-बाप की ज़िद के आगे झुक जाता है और रिश्ता टूट जाता है। यह ठुकराया जाना मीनू के दिल पर गहरी चोट करता है। (इस मोड़ की कुछ बातें, जैसे सरिता और धनीमल का रिश्ता ठीक किस सर्ग में आता है, स्रोतों में पक्के तौर पर नहीं मिलतीं।)

Then Seth Dhanimal sends a big-dowry proposal to Mayaram's house for his daughter Sarita. Greed for money creeps in, and Amit's parents pressure him to drop Minu and marry the rich seth's daughter. Amit truly loves Minu in his heart, but he bends before his parents' emotional insistence, and the match breaks. This rejection wounds Minu deeply. (Some fine details of this turn, such as exactly which sarg the Sarita and Dhanimal proposal falls in, are not firmly documented in the sources.)

बार-बार ठुकराए जाने और इस आख़िरी बेइज़्ज़ती से मीनू टूट जाती है, पर वह रोकर बैठ नहीं जाती। वह सोचती है कि जब तक लड़की दूसरों के सहारे रहेगी, तब तक उसका यही हाल रहेगा। उसके मन में बचपन का सपना फिर जागता है, वकील बनने का। सहेली नीलिमा भी उसे आगे बढ़ने की हिम्मत देती है। मीनू मन ही मन तय कर लेती है कि अब वह शादी के पीछे नहीं भागेगी, बल्कि पढ़-लिखकर अपने पैरों पर खड़ी होगी।

After repeated rejections and this last insult, Minu breaks down, but she does not just sit and cry. She realises that as long as a girl depends on others, this will keep happening to her. Her childhood dream of becoming a lawyer wakes up again. Her friend Neelima also gives her courage to move forward. In her heart Minu decides that she will no longer chase marriage, but will study and stand on her own feet.

मीनू अपने माँ-बाप से वकालत पढ़ने की इजाज़त माँगती है। पहले माँ-बाप घबराते हैं, पर बेटी का पक्का इरादा और लगन देखकर मान जाते हैं। तय होता है कि वह वकालत की पढ़ाई के लिए मेरठ जाएगी। साथ में घर के नौकर की बेटी राजो भी उसके साथ जाती है। इस तरह पहला भाग यहीं रुकता है। मीनू ने अपना ‘नया रास्ता’ चुन लिया है, और कक्षा 10 का भाग (सर्ग 14 से आगे) उसकी मेरठ की पढ़ाई और कामयाबी से शुरू होता है।

Minu asks her parents for permission to study law. At first they are nervous, but seeing their daughter's firmness and dedication, they agree. It is decided that she will go to Meerut to study law. Rajo, the daughter of the household servant, goes with her. This is where the first half ends: Minu has chosen her ‘new path’, and the Class 10 portion (from Sarg 14 onward) begins with her studies and success in Meerut.
