About the author
Sant Chokhamela: his birth year is unknown; 1338 CE is recorded as his year of samadhi (passing). His abhangs express both the compassion within a devotee's heart and a deep sorrow over social inequality and neglect. The essence of the Bhagavat dharma is felt in his character and in his words and deeds alike.
Summary
At the very start of the abhang, Sant Chokhamela says that God is extremely compassionate and merciful. He understands the hearts of His devoted followers and lovingly indulges their loving whims, caring for them tenderly. Chokhamela underscores this quality of God - understanding a devotee's feelings and caring for them - in this abhang.
In the following lines, Chokhamela says that God pays no attention to a devotee's caste, wealth or family lineage; He regards everyone equally. All God expects of the devotee is that they embrace His feet without hesitation or doubt. Through this, Chokhamela clearly conveys God's impartial vision and love, free of all discrimination.
Chokhamela says that even without being asked, God willingly places Himself under obligation to His devotees, granting the faithful both worldly comfort (bhukti) and spiritual liberation (mukti). Through these lines, Chokhamela describes God's generous, self-motivated grace.
At the end of the abhang, Chokhamela, naming himself, says that Shri Hari is so clever and loving that His mere sight alone dispels a devotee's fear of worldly existence (bhavbhay). Through this, Chokhamela underscores the importance of beholding God and the power of His grace.
