Summary
At the very start of the poem, the poet urges us to light lamps and become lamps ourselves, illuminating the world even as we burn. This expresses the idea of giving light and joy to others through one's own sacrifice - just as a lamp burns itself to give light to others, so too should a person selflessly strive for others, the poet suggests.
In the following lines, the poet says let us wipe away the tears of the sorrowful and turn those very tears into flames of light - that is, let us dispel their suffering and transform it into joy and radiance. However dark the night may be, the poet resolves that we shall not fear it but boldly challenge that darkness.
The poet says that if many flickering, individual flames come together, they can form one powerful torch. With such combined strength, let us make all the sorrowful, suffering and sinful people of the world travellers on the path of light, the poet calls. This expresses the idea of bringing about great transformation through collective effort.
At the end of the poem, the poet says let us claim kinship with the small ceremonial lamp and fill our own inner sanctum with light. Breaking all the bonds of darkness, the poet resolves to bring light to the entire universe, both animate and inanimate. Thus the poet longs for inner radiance alongside outer illumination.
