Summary

At the very start of the poem, the poet declares that this is a school without walls, wide open, where a million teachers await - not human teachers, but the trees, creepers, animals and birds themselves. Conversing with them and observing them closely, we shall learn from nature itself, the poet says. This underscores the value of free, informal learning in nature over the confines of a formal classroom.

In the next stanza, the poet says we shall observe the 'bungalow' the ants have built (their anthill), listen to the humming tune of the bumblebee, and watch the butterfly flitting about, revealing the colours of every flower. The poet gently suggests how much wisdom can be gathered from the activities of these small creatures of nature.

The poet goes on to say that we shall wander through streams, explore the rivulets, gather honeycombs from the trees, and in doing so, face a bit of a skirmish with the angry, stinging bees - and we shall take that on too. Through this the poet beautifully describes the adventure and daring one experiences in the company of nature.

At the end of the poem, the poet paints a picture of a day spent entirely in nature - bathing in the early morning sun, swimming to our heart's content in the stream at the height of noon, and in the evening, counting the twinkling stars in the sky. In this way, the poet expresses, in beautifully simple words, the idea of spending an entire day in nature's company, learning from it and finding joy in it.
